Reading Exile, Roger Averill’s moving memoir of his friend and mentor Werner Pelz, made me realise once more how fortunate we are in Australia to be an immigrant society. How dull it must be if a society closes its doors to people who come from a variety of experiences and offer a different way of looking at the world! Averill has the gift of making his subject instantly real to his readers, and right from the opening chapter I wanted to know more about this man.
