Silent Deception opens with Minnie arriving in Cornwall and seeking out someone to take her to Trekellis Manor, the haunted ancestral home she’s inherited. Step forward Gideon Drake who is eager enough to assist. Does Gideon have an ulterior motive? You bet he does.

With the locals steering clear of the manor, Minnie has no option but to agree to his help even though she suspects not all is as it should be. Before she can settle in her new home she must uncover the truth behind the family scandal

In her third book and first novella, Cathie Dunn takes us this time to Cornwall and gives us a taste of the rather windy and harsh weather as soon as our heroine, Minerva Goodridge, gets off the coach having reached her destination. The author has a real gift with description and so effortlessly everything comes to life and you're able to visualize the heart of a small and remote mining village, not very far from the sea, before another gust of salty wind come

If you're a fan of short novellas you'll enjoy this book. I would like to have learned more about Gideon and Minnie, and would have enjoyed more development of their relationship, but the novella doesn’t give the scope for that, though the Victorian setting is just right for this plot. I’ve read Miss Dunn's other books and have enjoyed them greatly, and indeed look forward to her next full-length novel.

A feisty heroine, a mystery, ghostly goings-on, and a handsome man with his own secrets and motives.

Cathie Dunn's passion for history is evident, and adding the beautiful county of Cornwall to the mix sealed the deal for me!

This made a good tale, and I very much enjoyed reading it.

If you fancy a quick read, with romance, ghosts, historical setting on the wild Cornish cliffs then this is for you.

Stars are so fickle, varying according to readers' whims. They not only depend on the type of reader, but on the mood of the reader on the day the book was read. At a different time, I might have used this novella to escape my world and immerse myself in another place, another era. And I would have given it 5 stars for its easy, flowing, wonderfully descriptive language.

As it was, I didn't need that escape and was feeling critical. Could it really have happened in that way in those days? I doubt
