Steve Brewer has one of the most creative minds among mystery writers. His use of language and character descriptions are superb. ("Mitzi and Nannette. Sounds like a couple of French poodles, doesn't it? That's how they act, too. Two snobs mincing about, yipping and yapping and--"). In "A Box of Pandoras," he brings us a female protagonist from Pandora, New Mexico who heads up the international fan club of a Hollywood heart throb. That heart throb comes to Santa Fe to attend a film festival and ...more

Good light read, laugh out loud funny, mystery ok. The characters in this book were so well developed, I kept thinking I knew them! Some lines in the book were so original and hilarious, I had to share with friends: example, "their SPF number was higher than their IQs". Will read more by this author.

Steve Brewer takes a new path through his latest crime mystery: the protagonist is a woman, and the novel is written in the first person point of view. Steve delivers the portrayal of small-town busybody and amateur sleuth Loretta Kimball with aplomb. As usual, I found myself laughing out loud, especially in the midst of the witty exchanges between Loretta and her husband Harley. Yet another winner from a guy who's been compared to Elmore Leonard, although I think Steve is funnier. I write that ...more

It's rare that a male writer will successly pull off writing a novel from a first-person female point of view, but Brewer does a great job here, turning Loretta Kimball into a supremely appealing if very opinionated main character. Brewer also manages to make great fun of small town New Mexico as well Santa Fe snobbery. Oh, and the mystery is well done too. A very fun read and one of Brewer's best books in a while.
