I expected to like this book, I tried to like this book, really I SHOULD have liked this book. Unfortunately, I didn't like this book. I pretty much knew by page 20 that I wasn't likely to like this book, but I really wanted to give it every opportunity to change my mind so I kept reading until page 80, but when I was still not liking it, I gave up.

I'm not even quite able to put my finger on exactly WHY I didn't like this book, because on the surface it has all kinds of things that normally add

Recommends it for: people interested in Egyptology, deserts,
Had fun reading this and using Google Earth to find and see locations in the Egyptian desert as I read about them in the story.

The book is 650 pages and all interesting. Of course the core story is fantasy, but a damned good one.

The story takes place in modern times after a flashback to the time of Saddam Hussein and arms trafficking. The main characters run about the northern half of Egypt and wind up going on a treasure hunt in the desert.

The novel contains interesting lore about Bedouins, abo

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon)
A good read. Even when the characters weren’t like-able they were rich (in detail) and interesting. In the end I grew to like them.

I particularly liked the author’s soft touch and eloquence in the “Good Bye” letter to Freya from Alex and around Alex’s Funeral.

The rest of this was what I call “sprint and drift” action/adventure. A chaotic flurry of action packed scenes that slow to a nice leisurely walk in places where he fills us in on back story, history and the personal touches. It’s well wr

There were points where I kind of shook my head and said, "that's a little lame", or something similar. But then I reminded myself that I was not in this for a deep, philosophical fulfillment or a cerebral mystery to unfold. No, I came into this book looking for a straight-up action story with an Indiana Jones feel. And for the most part, that's exactly what I got.

While some of the action is a little too cliche' (like escaping the bad guys by jumping out of a third-story window into a flatbed tr

This book has been very weird for me .
I liked the story, the idea of looking for a Lost Oasis amid Zahara , persecution between "the good and bad guys", the deaths involved in the process, the geographical details, etc. .
In many areas, was quite predictable but it had other plot twists that I didn't expected so that completely surprised me. There were some things I didn't like :

1. Molly 's character was so cliché: The typical crazy religious who does everything to achieve an ideal, but it retain

Pure entertainment value: 10 out of 10. Fast-paced adventure along the lines of Indiana Jones, this book was hard to put down. The characters are a bit too simplistic, with a bit too much baggage, but the pace of the book keeps you from dwelling on it. Some of the action scenes are very 'hollywood' (did they actually just drive into a fruit stall?), but they provide their own kind of humor as well. I found myself ahead of the book as far as the mystery was involved, and yet I was still surprised ...more

Quite an adventure! The beautiful American and intellectual and awkwardly cute English professor in the Middle Eastern desert looking for a lost city. Sounds a little bit cliche when I put it like that but who doesn't love a suspense and action filled treasure hunt in an exotic locale? It's one of those books that run like a movie in your head and takes two days to finish. On another note, it seriously reminds me of the television show Relic Hunters with Tia Carrere.

This was my third Paul Sussman novel but the earliest that he'd written. I'm sure many other people do the same when they find a good author, and go back to read all the stuff he's written before. The beginning takes place more than two thousand years BC and was a bit confusing as Sussman lays the groundwork of the legend of the hidden oasis deep in the south of Egypt. In present time we are introduced to ace American mountain climber Freya Hannen who has to rush to Egypt to attend her sister Al ...more
If I’d summarize it in one sentence: Was that stupid!

These are the first words that came to my mind after I finished this book. To cut it short here’re the pro’s and con’s of this book:

• The setting
• Descriptions
• Detailed
• Nice chases
• Historical information

• Predictability – I knew where the oasis was located even before I got to the half of the book; also I could tell that there will be a betrayal and who it’ll be and of course about the death of Freya’s sister, that she wasn’t mur

this sounded like a good book - and in the hands of james rollins or preston & child, for instance, it really could have been. ok - yes - i am biased regarding those guys, but still... this was pretty good and really good in parts, but there were just some things about it that kept me frustrated. the twins, for example - big mama's boys spouting inane dialogue and were they wearing the same armani suits the whole time? and with matching f-ball jerseys? seriously? and they made life or death ...more

The story of Freya who journeys to Egypt to lay her sister to rest, but finds that there is more than meets the eye to what she was researching. Freya finds help in her sister's friends as the story continues to unwind at a breakneck pace and she ultimately discovers the secret of the Hidden Oasis. I always like a good thriller, but I have to say the graphic violence in this book was a little overdone and ultimately detracted from the book.

The basic premise of this book was interesting. From the synopsis and reviews, it seemed like a sure-fire hit with all the right elements for a good read-Egypt, sun-gods, ancient venerated object with mythical powers so on and so forth. Sure enough, at the core, the author hit the mark on all those fronts. The reason it fell flat is because of the amount of violence and in my opinion, gratuitous violence. Unnecessary and disturbingly detailed descriptions of violence for a book of this genre. Wi ...more

Sussman, one of my favorite authors, never disappoints. The story starts in the year 2153BC with something (unknown at this point) being hidden in the desert and all of the Egyptian priests committing ritual suicide to protect its' location. The story then moves to the present with multiple locations and multiple people that coalesce into one; an Egyptian arms dealer, murderous twins, an American rock climber, a former MI6 agent are a few of the characters. The search for the hidden oasis and al ...more

This book had, in my opinion, many faults. The first is a personal pet peeve, but, there were too many scenes of violence to prove that the bad guys were the "bad guys". These descriptions of mindless violence didn't add anything to the story. Other recurring theme was how the women and their relationships were portrayed - one would think that a narrative that revolved around the female lead would be less misogynistic. The book was full of tropes and I caught myself thinking that I probably woul ...more

After reading Sussman's "Last Secret of the Temple", I decided to read this one as well. I love Egypt, history and antiquities, so this book held a lot of promise. It was an enjoyable read, although I was not crazy about the fantastical elements near the book that seemed to destroy the credibility of the story line. Levers hidden in cave that open a vault to drain the desert sand and reveal a hidden passage way, gorges that exist and are open to the sky yet can't be see from above when flying ov ...more
