Outside: something resembling Godzilla attacks the city. At the party, 'Faith' by George Michael is playing and someone is telling you to consider changing apartments.

“I’d rank this book up there with Fabulous Nobodies and I Pass Like Night, both books that I’ll never forget the experience of reading. Mastodon Farm arrived for me as a most unexpected series of nothings tha...more

Mastodon Farm is an experience.

It is about you. You are famous. Or at least you hang out with many famous people. You always listen to music when you drive your Ferrari. You like the band Vampire Weekend. You go places and do things and then go other places and do other things or the same things.

That's about it.

This book is simultaneously vague (there is no reason why you do these things, or even detailed descriptions of what you are doing) and specific (almost everything you do is linked to so...more

I was at a house party in Brooklyn for my Mom's birthday and James Franco walked in. Everyone went crazy, in a quiet way.
Anyway, James Franco was talking to this girl the whole time about a book called "Mastodon Farm" so I thought I would look it up. I was drunk but I remembered the name because it was so unique. James Franco said to a different girl, "This is one of the best books I've ever read. And I know books." So I read it. James Franco was right--it was one of the best books I've ever re...more

Mastodon Farm was a free book to me that sounded different and interesting...

That's it. Not even free is enough to make me waste anymore of my time. I try to be considerate to authors and read the entire book; but no way! 26 pages was the best I could do. Skimmed the rest hoping it would improve...no luck.

First time in 40 years I have found a book I just cannot read!

Totally disconnected from reality, random thoughts, or not thoughts maybe. Hope not to read Mike Kleine ever again.

It's not very often that I have trouble reviewing a book. This one, I can't even seem to summarize. I want to say it's a commentary on the emptiness of Hollywood and the accompanying lifestyle. The use of the second person gives it a detached, dreamlike quality, as does the purposefully repetitive nature of the prose. James Franco and other celebrities are the characters. While I'm not quite sure exactly what it was I just read, it defeinitely made a favorable impression. I was tempted to write...more

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Mike Kleine, a.k.a. Fancy Mike in the music world, is a very talented writer. His old bizarro ways has been tempered down, chopped up and dashed into this dream-mundane day-in-the-life of the rich and famous, i.e. you. It works. A++++, would read again.

Mastodon Farm is about you. You are wealthy and only associate with famous people. Mike Kleine has written your life. His language is stripped down, but your story is dense. Anyway, I’m going to end this blurb by just throwing out some author names so I can avoid the whole “It’s like if so-and-so had a baby with so-and-so and they did LSD with a declarative sentence“ thing: Samuel Beckett, Tao Lin, Bret Easton Ellis.
Michael Seidlinger
Reads like Bret Easton Ellis had an aneurysm and somehow kept on writing.

Highly entertaining! A celebrity edition of The Sims, only better.

Have you ever woken up and gotten out of bed then went about your day, not really noticing you just passed a cartoon character on the street and the dollar store next to your apartment building is now a military base and then woke up? That kind of dream is how I would describe the experience of reading MASTODON FARM.
