Dangerous Waters by Toni Anderson is a fast paced, exciting, romantic suspense-slash-mystery set in Bamfield, British Columbia. It’s an intriguing tale of murder, cover-ups, and a community either too scared or too complacent to get involved in any of it.

Toni Anderson had to work for this five star review from me as romantic suspense is not my first choice of reading genres. In fact, I tend to shy away from it because I want reading to be a pleasant escape. Yet I requested to review DANGEROUS WATERS because of the Pacific setting, the capable heroine investigating the murder, and the mysterious hero impeding her investigation. Plus the setting, hero...more

The female lead is hard to like. She falls victim to adolescent emotions and pouts when people don't fall in line with her plan. No need to mention she has just recently had an affair with her married boss and aside from not wanting to be around him doesn't seem to experience much shame about it. Found myself rolling my eyes nearly every time she spoke.

And I was totally jarred by Toni Anderson describing Holly's breath as "puffing like the Hogwarts Express." Was it necessary to bring a Harry Pot...more

Dangerous Waters
By Toni Anderson
“Dangerous Waters” is the fifth book from Toni Anderson. I can report that if you enjoyed her previous suspense romance, “Edge of Survival,” or any of her stories for that matter, then this latest tale will not disappoint. Anderson follows a formula, which I am sure fans of her books will wholeheartedly applaud.

Her recipe for a successful suspense seems very simple but certainly difficult to replicate if you haven’t her talent for plotting. Take a feisty police in...more

Holly Rudd arrived in Bamfield to investigate a body found by divers with a knife sticking out of its chest. While investigating the death Holly quickly realizes that the small community has a lot of secrets that it has been hiding for years. One of the most disturbing secrets is Holly’s resemblance to a woman murdered three decades ago. Holly can dismiss her resemblance to the woman but what she can’t dismiss is her attraction to Finn Car...more

My"in a nutshell" summary...

Seaside village...thirty year old crimes...it sort of all comes to a full circle.

My thoughts after reading this book...

Finn and Holly...Holly and Finn...magnetic attraction from the start in spite of Holly's attempts to stay away from Finn...circumstances and events just continued to place them in each other's paths. Holly comes to the island to investigate a murder...a body with a knife embedded in its chest was found on a dive. This is...more

The ugly secrets of a picturesque Canadian town are exposed after Finn Carver and his best friend Thom discover a body in a shipwreck. Finn smells a set-up, since the knife protruding from the body belongs to Thom, and only the two of them are supposed to know the shipwreck even exists. Finn’s troubles only escalate when the Mounties are sent in, including one very attractive Sergeant Holly Rudd.

Holly’s attraction to Finn is a big problem, since he’s technically a suspect in her case. She’s als...more

Only danger is to your brain cells

When one is a connoisseur of the genre known as "trashy underwater fiction" (coined by me), novels like Toni Anderson's Dangerous Waters are the risk you take. It's simply the worst thing I've read in quite some time.

I was attracted to the novel's plot, involving two divers out of a British Columbia marine research station stumbling upon a body while on a night dive in a wreck. The death is the result of neither natural causes nor a dive accident, but rather the...more

Dangerous waters has a great storyline, a well-developed plot and likable characters. I was intrigued by the setting, with the small remote town and the diving adventures. There are twists along the way, some expected and others more surprising. The story definitely held my interest and kept me turning pages.

The romance here is the main focus, with the suspense playing out in the background. That is often the case with the romantic suspense genre, but can still often have a unique and modern sp...more

Toni Anderson's "Dangerous Waters" (Montlake Romance 2012)is from the new genre of romantic thrillers. I should have looked closer when I picked this book out of the 'thriller' category and noticed the publisher. Duh. Instead, I spent most of the 350 pages wondering how such intelligent characters could fall prey to teenage emotions so succinctly?

Let me back up. If you can leap over the nonstop romantic innuendos, thoughts, and emotions, this is a wonderful story. Thomas Edgefield and Finn Carve...more

This was a romantic suspense title that nicely balanced both the romance and the suspense. The story starts with a murder of a 24-year-old woman and her six week old son. Her two year old daughter disappeared at the same time. Than thirty years pass.

The woman's husband is Dr. Thom Edgefield. He has never let the unsolved case rest. He has devoted his life to harassing the police to keep working on the murder. Along the way he has reported any suspicious behavior to the police which has not endea...more

Nope, I give up. I just can't drag myself through this book any longer.

Full review:

Though I don't typically read romantic suspense when I'm looking for a suspense novel, there are some books in the genre that I enjoy. I'm always a fan of good romantic tension between characters, as well as the "will they or won't they" question (which, of course, usually turns into "Of course they will!"--but I digress.) However, it has to be done well, and the romantic tension is something this book does not do...more

Toni Anderson has written an amazing, gripping tale that will keep you on the edge of your seat and itching for more! Dangerous Waters was not at all predictable, like so many books these are today. The detail is amazing, with a picture written so clearly you become a part of the characters, enmeshed in the scenery and environment with them. As I was reading Dangerous Waters, I found myself addicted to the twists and turns of the mystery unable to predict the next move of the murderer, much less...more

With vibrant writing, a cast of damaged, captivating characters and a plot that’s deliciously diabolical, Dangerous Waters will have you mesmerized from page one. Anderson writes in a dark, edgy style reflected in the setting, the story line, and the secrets that haunt the members of this close-mouthed coastal community. Her characters are multi-dimensional and sympathetic—I was especially moved by the thorny relationship between Finn and his ex-convict brother. The sexual tension is high, the h...more

Great small town murder mystery with lots of twist and a romance.

Opens with a shocking murder that happened 30 years ago and then goes to present day where another murder has happened. The story takes place in a small remote town in Canada. After two divers find a body underwater Sergeant Holly Rudd of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and her team arrive to investigate. Holly's father is a commanding officer with the RCMP and she always felt she had to prove herself. This was her first time be...more

Toni Anderson starts with an original premise for a murder mystery: the victim is found stabbed to death thirty metres deep in murky waters. So far, so good. But in assembling a cast of suspects, the author lines up a whole cast of stereotypes with barely credible motives.

This is also a romantic novel, and here we are close to Mills and Boon waters. "...the frisson of attraction crackled between them, as obvious as forked lightning on a moonless night." "... gray eyes locked on hers and it was d...more

I didn't read the reviews or write up closely enough, otherwise I would have known that this was a romance novel more than a mystery novel. I thought the lead character, as well as the other characters, was very shallow. A lead detective whose hormones rule her body, even in the midst of a homicide investigation. The plot had some potential, but I thought it was poorly executed. The author did, however, keep you guessing somewhat as to who the killer was for much of the book. If you're into roma...more

Dangerous Waters opens with a chapter that grabs you. A glimpse into the past that provides a puzzle piece that you know is somehow key to the current story but you have no idea how or why...so you just have to keep on reading.

The Canadian landscape provides the backdrop for this latest offering from Toni Anderson. As a Canadian I very much appreciate that the story takes place in Canada because it doesn’t happen very often.

While I found myself enjoying trying to figure out whodunnit and why, this book fell kind of flat for me. The main character, Holly, acted ridiculously in my opinion. She is portrayed as very driven and dedicated to her career, but she very quickly gets romantically involved with a suspect in her investigation. She can't keep her hormones in check for even a week while they try to close the case? And I didn't really see the attraction to Finn.

I liked the Canadian setting, though what kind of sma...more

All in one...murder, kidnapping, mystery, and of course falling in love!!! What will families do for each other?? One man trying to find out what happened to his murdered wife and children, everyone thought he was nuts for decades, when he thought his daughter was still alive. Then Holly comes to town to figure out a different murder and he faints at the sight of her.

This is the first Toni Anderson book I read. The beginning of the book grabbed my interest from the start. The characters was okay. The storyline was okay. I decided to finish the book to see how it ended, the ending was quite good. I would read other books by this author.

despite not being what I usually look for in a book,i think the story is interesting, this suspense book had me always glued to it, i couldn't stop until the last page.
the girl is not the usual princess in danger, she's a strong woman with her ups and downs and struggling to survive all this story between murder, love and mystery.

I am becoming a huge fan of Toni's novels! (full disclosure, I know her IRL)
This story is exciting and keeps you turning the pages until the end. The characters are complex and well-developed, which you don't often find in this genre, and the dialogue is snappy and witty. The descriptions of Vancouver Island are lovely (although I was aided by the fact that I've actually spent time in Bamfield, where the story is set). Overall, this is a fun read and I recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the...more

This is a free book from Goodreads Firstreads. All my spare time was spent reading this book. Toni Anderson wrote a catching romantic suspense filled with twists and turns. I found myself hooked on the plot and characters. I will definitely seek out Ms Anderson's other books. I highly recommend you read Dangerous Waters.

If you like Tami Hoag, you'll love this book! I was stumped until the end, but then it all made perfect sense. Taut, tense romantic suspense, with plenty of twists.
