Summer Nights (Fool's Gold #8)

Susan Mallery (Goodreads Author)
Horse whisperer Shane Stryker is done with passion. This time around, he's determined to meet someone who will be content with the quiet life of a rancher's wife. And the fiery, pint-size redhead who dazzles him at the local bar definitely does not fit the bill.

This was an absorbing story but suffered from too many phrase repetitions. I think this series is getting churned out too quickly.
Pretty much every single character from the previous books in the series turned up, all heavily laden with pregnancies and/or babies; at one point the hero even wound up at the hospital for the childbirth of two people he'd never even met. That was supposed to be cute, but was just weird.

I'm not usually the cowboy type but this book is definitely making me re-think that...
Annabelle is done conforming to what men want her to be. Never again after her failed marriage. So she moves to the small town of Fools Gold to start her life over working as a librarian at the local library. She's not usually what you would consider a wild girl, in fact she might even be considered boring by most people, but that's not the impression Shane gets when he sees her dancing on a bar. After Shane's...more

Synopsis: A librarian and a cowboy must learn to trust and love again after divorce. The community of Fool's Gold gives them a hand.

I was sold at the word “librarian,” being a librarian myself. From the bar-dance to the festival, we get to see that Annabelle is willing to put herself out there for what she is passionate about (in this case, her community). She appeals to Shane to help her see through the horse dance for the festival, which will raise money for a much needed library vehicle to bring materials and computers to those farther out.

Annabelle was a fun character, and the Stryker brothers all seemed like good guys. I believed the slow growth of friendship between Annabelle and Shane, but didn't really believe the sexual chemistry between the two. To put it bluntly, they were boring. I was much more interested in Charlie the firefighter's desire for and journey toward motherhood than I was in Shane and Annabelle as a couple.

Being back in Fool’s Gold is like coming home... Home to a city you wish really existed. This is the eighth in the Fool’s Gold series and the second regarding a Stryker Brothers.
Annabelle is a librarian who we met a few books ago. She decides to raise money for a bookmobile and will be a part of a parade and do a dance on horseback. However she has no idea how to ride a horse. That is where Shane comes in. Shane has been hurt before and after seeing Annab...more

First, a word about the cover. Absolutely no scenes in this book take place on a beach, certainly not any love scenes. I'm all astonishment that this photo was chosen as the cover, because it reflects nothing about the book other than a couple who falls in love.
Which is a shame, because Summer Nights is a fun, sexy read and perfect for reading at, say, the beach.

Those who have followed my blog for a while now know that I am a huge fan of Susan Mallery and her Fool's Gold series. I was extremely fortunate to get another ARC from the series!

Summer Nights is another Fool's Gold story. Its fun to see the characters from other stories back. I enjoyed reading Summer Nights. Their was a few love scenes that I skipped over.
Shane Stryker is back in Fool's Gold living with his mother May, her boyfriend Glen, his brother Rafe, and his Fiance Heidi, who is Glen granddaughter.
Shane has bought land next to Rafe's and his building a house, barn. He raises racehorses. Besides just taking care of his own animals, he is taking care of his...more

Horse breeder Shane Stryker's first impression of librarian Annabelle Weiss is that she's an attention-seeker: just like his ex-wife. But when she shows up at his temporary ranch for riding lessons, he finds himself drawn to her. I have such a soft spot for small town romances, and the Fool’s Gold Series by Susan Mallery has always been some of the best. In this book, we get to see the not-so-stereotypical librarian Annabelle meet her match with the horse trainer Shane.

Annabelle, survivor of a bad marriage, just wants to be loved for the person she really is. Cowboy Shane (brother of Rafe from Summer Days) also coming off a bad marriage, just wants a quiet woman he can trust. Instantly attracted to Annabelle when he first sees her in Jo's bar he rules her out as a potential mate because she is dancing on the bar. He mistakes her for an attention seeking narcissist like his ex-wife. Annabelle senses the attraction, but can't understand why Shane keeps pulling b...more
Annabelle Weiss is a librarian in need of a bookmobile. She has decided to raise money by doing The Dance of the Horse at the next town festival (they have one every (or nearly every) month). She's got ten weeks to get it down but she needs some help. Because, well, she doesn't exactly know how to ride a horse and, really, she needs a horse that has been trained to dance.

This book had me laughing at quite a few scenarios and there were a few sweet moments that really showed off Annabelle's and Shane's personalities. I chuckled when I read Shane's stereotype of librarians and am very glad that Annabelle is no way near that.
I thought there was great chemistry between Annabelle and Shane. I had a good laugh when Annabelle tried to fix Charlie up. I also enjoyed the interaction between Annabelle, Shane and the animals. The pony incident and Khatar got me laughing to...more

This is my second Susan Mallery read, I started with Summer Days which was the first Stryker brother Rafe, and I think I’ve been hooked into the Fool’s Gold world. The town is just so quirky and fun it’s hard not to get sucked in. Shane is returning after spending part of his childhood in Fools Gold, he always had fond memories of the town, its where his love of horses started. Now, he is back and starting his dream, his own ranch and breeding program of thoroughbred race horses. Annabelle is a...more
What a great love story. This is about Shane Stryker who has moved back to Fool's Gold where he was raised. He breeds and trains racehorses quite successfully. The heroine is Annabelle, the town librarian. Shane is still trying to recover from a nasty divorce. He first sees Annabelle dancing on a bar and is totally turned off by it. Her dance was quite innocent however.

This is book 8 in the Fools Gold series. Susan Mallery really knows how to start a series and run with it. In this book Shane Stryker ( Rafe's brother from Summer Days book7) is attracted to Annabelle Weiss the lovely librarian in Fool's Gold. His first time seeing her however she is dancing on the bar at Jo's place and he assumes she is a wild girl who loves attention. Oh boy. Big mistake. In reality Annabelle was stone sober and showing all the ladies in the tavern what the dance of the happy...more
I'm usually kind of leery of small town contemps... there's a glut of overly trite and saccharine ones on the market, and I generally want more from my romances than that "Aw, gee, shucks" cuteness and cardboard characters.
I picked this one up because it has a librarian in it, but I wasn't really expecting to be wow'ed.
Happily, I was wrong. This is NOT one of "those" small town contemps. The town of Fool's Gold is not without its quaint quirkiness, but the characters have both depth and intellig...more

This was one of those books that by the end, I said to myself "I want a Shane Stryker!"
I saw this book on the shelf at Target. Read the back, but didn't think much of it. Right after Target, I stopped at Walmart to check out what they had. I saw this book again. Read the back again and thought "For 6 bucks, I can buy this book, and if it's bad, it's only 6 bucks..." SIX BUCKS WELL SPENT MY FRIENDS!

Oh, Shane, Shane, Shane. Talk about issues! So adorable, such a genuinely nice guy, and yet so utterly clueless. Based on a few milliseconds of watching a complete stranger dancing on a bar, he proceeds to spend the majority of twenty chapters measuring Annabelle with a flawed yardstick. Even when he realizes what he's done, he keeps on doing it. And yet—I, along with Annabelle, love him anyway. But yeesh, he waits until the very last minute to pull it all together! (And even though you know pra...more

As most of you very well know, I am a huge fan of the Fool's Gold series, I just adore the town, the people, everything about it. I want to be a part of it. Walk the streets, know the people, see the sights. It sounds like such a fabulous place to be a raise a family and settle down.

I really liked the dynamic between the hero & heroine in this book. Annabelle's this funny and entertaining librarian who goes after what she wants & dancing on top of bars sober, to boot. Totally my kind of girl with her kick-ass/ sweet nature.

Although this was a fun read, it lacked the something extra I like to see. Mainly most of it did not ring true for me. I have been training my new 4-year-old gelding for a year now and have been to two clinics and listened to umpteen DVD's on the subject of horses and these horses just weren't real to me - none of them. The goats seemed more reasonable, but then I know nothing about goats. The very idea of a novice riding a high-strung Arabian race horse was ludicrous at best and teaching an exp...more

I have been reading about how each Stryker member met their significant other. I started with Evie, then read about Rafe and this one was about Shane and Annabelle. So far the verbal sparing between the two was the most entertaining. I think because Shane and Annabelle have a dry sense of humour which I love. Shane is pretty blunt, clueless and insensitive, but I guess when you work with horses a lot, you become clueless. Annabelle's friend, Charlie, is a complex character. Cannot wait until th...more

This is my first read of the Fool's Gold series by Susan Mallery and I really enjoyed it! The story centers on Annabelle and Shane. She is the local librarian and is trying to raise money for a bookmobile by doing a show in the local parade, which she needs to ride a horse to do. Shane breeds horses and Annabelle goes to him to learn how to ride and this is where the fun begins.

“He knew he could force the issue. Be blunt. But in getting his way, he would have to watch the bright light go out of her eyes. He would see her slim shoulders slump and know he was the cause. Damn it all to hell, he didn't think he could stand that.
Yet another testament to how bad he had it for her. Women, he thought with a sigh. What had God been thinking?”

“you're Shane, right?'
He inched away from her and managed a quick nod as he twisted the rag he held in his fingers.
'Heidi sad you were willing to teach me how to ride.' Her expression shifted from entertained to confused, as if she was wondering why no one had mentioned he was a can or two shy of a six-pack.
'A horse,' he clarified, then wanted to kick himself. What else but a horse? Did he think she was here to learn to ride his mother's elephant?
One corner of Annabelle's perfect, full mouth twitched. 'A horse would be good. You seem to have several.'
He wanted to remind himself that he was usually fine around women. Smooth even. He was intelligent, funny and could, on occasion, be charming. Just not now, with his blood pumping and his brain doing nothing more than shouting "it's her, it's her" over and over again.
Chemistry, he thought grimly. It could turn the smartest man into a drooling idiot. Here he was, proving the theory true.”
