This book shows how the society was organized around the slaves in Suriname. A lot of attention is paid to the cruel punishments that were given to the slaves out of fear of revolt.

The book is overloaded with dates concerning de Bye's family, which I found very uninteresting to read, not being a member of his family.

The writing style was not very constant. When a character was first introduced, you become curious to read what happens next to him or her, but you're not allowed to experience the
