i was so hoping to be scared by this book. the way i was hoping to cry reading a monster calls. and it is fine that i wasn't and that i didn't - apparently i have no discernible human emotional response except an ability to become enthusiastic over well-written prose. and that's enough, for a life.

i don't even care that this book wasn't scary - it was so fun, and that is usually all i need to be riveted. did it have flaws? sure! were there things in the book that occurred that made me pause? naturally. but overall, i found her voice so refreshing and her characters so likable, that none of it matters. this is a well-told story.

i thought this was more beautiful than scary. really, karen? even with all the ripped-up corpses and blood everywhere?? yup! i really did. i read it as a ghost who had a shitty life, and couldn't even get any peace after she was dead, and a boy who was missing out on his childhood because of an overdeveloped sense of justice and revenge. and of first love and first friendship and faith. secular faith. and there were so many genuinely funny moments (i do love this kid), and one terrible thing (view spoiler). definitely a well-executed book, and there are more to come?? sign me up right now.

a note on cursing. i am no lady, i am pretty comfortable with a wide range of salty talk. and sometimes, you can tell that some teen fiction is just dropping its f-bombs to shock or titillate its audience, all commiserating "oooh - don't tell the grownups!!" this was a book in full control of its potty mouth. a rainbow of expletives, masterfully handled. it brought a tear to the eye to see such a well-developed sense of vulgarity. again, not for shock value, but just the way kids curse. only funnier. and more elegantly. it is an art, after all. most kids use it as a weapon.

so between that, the maroon type (sucker for that), and the pathos and humor, this was an easy five-star book. i may never be scared of a book again,but at least i can still be entertained.

I never expected Kendare Blake to be one of those authors – that’s why her book took me completely by surprise. It was very different from what I thought it would be. When I choose a book based on a beautiful cover and an intriguing title (and yes, I really AM that shallow), especially one that none of my friends have read, I usually end up disappointed. Anna Dressed in Blood undoubtedly looks amazing and has a memorable title, but the most interesting part is right where it should be – between the covers.

Cassius Theseus Lowood grew up in an unconventional family. His mother is a white witch and his father was in the business of killing the dead for the second time, at least until one of the ghosts he was hunting murdered him in the most gruesome way. In Cas’s world, dead people often don’t want to leave the place where they died, especially if they were victims of a violent crime. Instead, they stay behind as monstrous echoes of their former selves – most of them seeking revenge for the horrors they experienced.
When Cas’s father died, Cas inherited his duties and his powerful athame. He’s been moving all over the country and killing ghosts since he was 14 years old. But he’s never run into a ghost as powerful as Anna nor did he ever try so hard to understand what drives a dead person to murder innocent people.
Anna is different in every way. She was killed in 1958. while walking to the prom in her beautiful white dress. When her throat was slit, blood covered her entirely, thus earning her the name Anna Dressed in Blood.
Someone cut her throat, but that’s an understatement. Someone nearly cut her head clean off. They say she was wearing a white party dress, and when they found her, the whole thing was stained red. That’s why they call her Anna Dressed in Blood.

Ever since her murder, Anna’s been tied to the house she grew up in. Twenty seven people have tried to enter, and none of them came out alive.

Nothing is black and white in Anna's story: she is both a killer and a victim, a horrible monster and an innocent girl – and just when you think you figured her out, she turns around and does something completely unexpected! Her entire personality changes as quickly as her appearance which forces Cas to doubt every single choice he made since the beginning of his hunt.

I don’t usually watch horror movies and I always do my best to avoid horror novels, (view spoiler), but black witches, white witches, people trapped in walls, Voodoo, athames, ghost hunting, cursed objects, a strong male protagonist and unexpected developments made me very happy that I decided to read this book. I really hope it gets the attention it deserves.

If you've been looking for a great YA horror novel, look no further. Anna Dressed in Blood is a stunning novel, full of atmospheric spookiness and unthinkable horrors. I cringed reading about ghosts with stones where their eyes should be, I yelped when Cas goes down into a basement full of...dreadful things, and my eyes got as big as saucers when the walls starting bleeding. But although the descriptions are full of vivid imagery and there's plenty of brutal action, what happens isn't at all gross. If anything, there's a dark beauty in the descriptions and an elegance in the writing that makes every scene a true pleasure to read. My reading status updates will give you a peek at some of the lines and scenes that particularly made me shiver, but I really had to restrain myself from posting one every couple of pages, as there's so much to savor, even in simple but humorous lines such as "She's wearing the same smile as her cat." I found just as much to love in the writing as I did the fantastic story, and the cheeky humor made me laugh even in dire and inappropriate circumstances.

This is the darker, more grown-up version of Hold Me Closer, Necromancer, and it's much more violent and much more polished. Anna offers an unforgettable thrill of a ride--and it catapulted instantly to my favorites list for the year. I am so excited about this author and I can't wait for the sequel, Girl of Nightmares, to come out in 2012. Read it, read it, read it! I promise it will make you shudder, in the very best of ways.

When I went into this book I had zero expectations. I think ghosts are cool, and I was really just looking for something super creepy, because that was what I was in the mood for. I didn't even really have anything to compare this to, because I haven't read very many ghost books and have never watched any kind of t.v. shows involving them either.

Cas is a ghost hunter and he hates to be called a ghostbuster. lol He wants to avenge his father's death as he was killed by a ghost he was trying to hunt. First, though, he must kill Anna. Anna is a ghost of a girl who was brutally murdered in the 1950s. Anna is epic in my opinion. Cas has some friends to help him with Anna, but as he gets closer to killing her he finds himself starting to like her (wtf?) For me this is when the story just gets ridiculous.

Some things I loved in this book were Cas and Anna. Not together. Cas was a pretty cool guy for the most part and I really liked him. Anna was awesome, and at some point I found myself really bored with the story and I was skipping ahead and reading only the parts with Cas and Anna talking. The rest of the school kids weren't that interesting at all.

I really enjoyed Anna's back story. It reminded me of being 13 and telling ghost stories when I went camping with my friends, and sure it would have creeped me out for more back then, but it was still a great story. I felt really bad for her, and when everything was revealed about her death I was pretty shocked and pissed off.

The bad thing here is that once Anna's story was revealed there were still lots of pages left in this book. Lots of boring pages if you ask me. I didn't really care to read much more about it, and I certainly did not want to read about the romance. It just seemed so silly. This book didn't have any good plot twists or anything intense you would normally expect from a book like this. Even the ending just kind of happened and left no impression on me. I think this book will be forgettable.

This is book one of a series, and I can't say I'm excited to start book two as soon as it comes out. I might give it a try, because based on the beginning of the book the story has potential. I'm just afraid the rest is going to be a really bad paranormal romance and that would be disappointing. In short I wish she would have stuck with the horror aspect instead of trying to turn it into paranormal romance at the end. Had I known that was how it would be I would have passed on this book in the first place.

I probably won't recommend this book to my friends, but I would tell anyone interested in it to give it a try, because there are lots of people who enjoyed this book. It just wasn't for me. (less)

I'm the first to admit that when something is hyped I give it the ol' stink-eye, and I very rarely enjoy something that's popular or that everyone and their brother tells me I'll like. I pounced on this book before the "ZOMG YOU HAVE TO READ THIS!!1!" crazy train rolled into the station, and I'm really glad I did. This is one of those rare instances where everybody likes a book because it's actually good.

I guess I wasn't paying much attention at first glance, mostly to avoid spoilers, but I was surprised that the protagonist was actually male. I thought Anna was the main character, but even though she's not this is still very much her story. Anna is terrifying. She doesn't fuck around and she doesn't take shit from anyone. She makes you feel sorry for her though, which at first seems like an impossible feat, and yet it definitely happens. It's the sign of a capable author who makes you sympathize with a character who literally tears people apart.

Cas is the "ghost hunter" and reluctant hero of the story. He's definitely cocksure, but not annoyingly so. He doesn't whine, he doesn't act like an ass, and he doesn't make stupid decisions. Cas is one of the best young male protagonists I think I've ever come across. He's smart and knows his strengths and once he realizes he can't get his job done without the help of others, he accepts it and adapts.

The only reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 was because the rhythm of the story stuttered a bit around the halfway point. We're essentially given two climaxes, and after the first one receded I knew it was just a matter of time before the other shoe dropped. There's a scene just before the villain emerges that was probably one of the scariest parts of a book I've ever read, but unfortunately after reading that bit, nothing else could compare. I expected something equally terrifying when Cas finally came face to face with his adversary, but it just didn't happen. Not that the ending and final fight were bad, just that I wanted something more.

Blake's writing is beautiful and incredibly lyrical. There were so many quotable passages that I wanted to type out almost a whole page for some of my updates. She writes realistic teenagers without relying on too many stereotypes and clichés, and her characters form believable bonds unlike a lot of stories where a group of kids just randomly band together to save the day. There were casualties along the way, and I liked that I didn't see some of them coming. I also enjoyed the gore and gruesome bits, and I don't think it ever got to the point where someone would be offended or disgusted by some of the graphic violence. It's over quickly, at least, and she does balance the spookier parts with some well-placed humor throughout.

I'm excited that she's writing a sequel to this story and I hope she writes other books and other series in the future. Anna and Cas are two of my favorite characters I've read about this year and I can't wait to see what's in store for them. It's so nice to finally read a paranormal young adult book that isn't absolute drivel. Bravo, Blake. Bravo.(less)

Anna Dressed in Blood is YA meet Amityville Horror. It was creepy and ominous, but also funny. I didn't find it incredibly scary, just kind of spooky - well ok, a lot spooky. I did love it though, I absolutely did!

Firstly, it was refreshing to have a male protagonist. I wish there were more books as such. Theseus Cassio (Cas) is our main character in this novel and he's awesome! He has a great sense of humour and he's such a sweetheart. I adored his character. He's had a tough life being a ghost hunter, but he makes light of his situations. He's also great at interacting with others. Unlike your stereotypical egocentric teenage boy.

Cas receives information regarding Anna, a ghost who's been murdering anyone who enters her house. All 27 people of them… so far. Subsequently, they pack up and move to her home town where Cas plans on stopping her. I loved the Anna story, it was typical but not cliché. I also loved how the author went beyond the usual YA and made it more graphic; more horrific. It really gives you the creeps!

I love my horror, this was 100% a book for me, and the author did a great job. Kendare knows how to tell a story, and tell it well. I didn't think it was over the top, but I could still see myself getting nightmares from this story. She gives us enough details to make us experience it - which considerably adds to the creep factor. There were a few minor traits that bothered me though. Mostly, it's the reaction of the characters that were often unconvincing: Anna, who is scary as heck, attacks and almost kills Carmel, and all she says is "My god, she's awful".. yeah.. a little...

"You forgot about the bad part. You know, the part where we have to get Anna inside the circle and throw chicken feet at her."

Another noteworthy aspect in this novel is the humour that is mixed in with the horror. Cas is funny and witty even in the worst situations. He knows his stuff, but he also sounds his age. This makes it all very easy to get into the story.

Ultimately, this is pure horror it's its finest form. If this wasn't enough to convince you to read it, just look at that cover and title. What's not to love?

Unfortunately, she decided to make this a regular occurence as scaring me was so very entertaining.I remember at a sleepover her mother had recently bought the hardcover of the book "The Exorcist". She put it right next to my pillow so that when I woke up it would be staring at me. For those who have never seen the book, here you go:

Evil Kristin continued on her "Pussification of Heather Tour" throughout our teens. Her most binding "prank" was forcing me to watch The Shining. I recall her telling me she had watched it with her brother and it had a "really sweet ending". Everytime I would get up to use the bathroom, she would screech "REDRUM, REDRUM!" and I would usually haul ass back to the bed either slamming my toe into the bedpost or kneeing the dresser at full speed.It was well into my thirties before I would go alone to fill the ice bucket at a hotel.
Anna Dressed in Blood regurgitated similar feelings in me but without the embarassing, teenage self-consciousness that always followed.
Our fearless leader, Cas Lowood kills the dead that cannot cross over. Cas and his mother move from place to place ridding the towns of whatever evil spirit is wreaking havoc on it's citizens.They move to Thunder Bay, Ontario where the ghost of Anna Korlov is rumored to have slaughtered countless trespassers who have dared to seek refuge in the dilapidated house that she resides in. What follows is a freaky, sweet, endearing and at times, scary as FUCK horror story. As Cas has spent his life moving around, he struggles with creating attachments to his highschool friends and to Anna as well, because Anna is different than the rest of the ghosts he has killed. In spite of my obvious squeamishness to anything scary, I had a blast with this book. The characters were likeable, the dialogue was witty and well-written and the plot moved along seamlessly. I'm glad there is a sequel in the works as I would hate to think I wouldn't be hearing from Cas again. (less)

I was really quite pleased with this exciting, slightly spooky, and wholly entertaining start to the series.

I cannot stress highly enough how glad I am that Kendare Blake wrote a romance that was gradually introduced as the story moved along and the characters developed. It would have been so easy - and not at all unexpected - for the author to just create an insta-loving, destiny bound pair, completely devoid of all chemistry and certain to be walking off into the sunset holding hands and singing folk songs at the novel's close. But no. I was able to see how the relationship changed and developed and it was not unclear to me why these two would fall for one another.

Also, I had been unaware that the protagonist was male, just assuming that the book would be told from Anna's point of view. I will say of Cas what I said of another Cas(tiel) who I enjoyed reading about: he was easy to relate to, but at the same time he was believably male. Something which appears to be rather difficult if books like Tempest are anything to go by. The story had me interested from the very first chapter and kept me glued to the pages throughout. The book actually has two big mysteries to solve and an interesting twist towards the end so I remained thoroughly mystified. Some people found this book scary, others not so much, I would say that there's one part which you wouldn't want to read when you're alone in your house at night but other than that it's more gory and gross than actually frightening. So beware if you're squeamish but expect a wild and exciting ride.

‘Anna Dressed in Blood’ quickly became initiated into my Favorites shelf. This was one fabulously exciting novel that turned me into a wild page turning crazy person. I was initially intrigued by the cover but had thoughts that it would turn out to be cheesy and not worth my time… boy was I wrong. This was one extremely well written book. The storyline was original and I loved it. I’m a total sucker for ghostie books or anything undead in general so I knew I had to give this a shot either way.

CREEPY. Man! I would not have expected this, I suppose because it’s a YA book but wowsa… there were a few times I thought my eyeballs were gonna fall out of my head my eyes were open so far. Creepy, gruesome, but I LOVED IT. No fluffy bunny stuff here, beware.

There have been a lot of comparisons between 'Anna Dressed in Blood' and 'Necromancer' and while I'm in complete agreement because of the sense of humor, but there is a subtle difference between the main characters. In 'Anna' Cas is fully aware of his powers at the start of the novel and what he is able to do and he has a confidence that is admirable and quite lacking in 'Necromancer'. Overall, all of the characters were well written and extremely likeable and I enjoyed every minute of this.

Holy crap. That? Was some awesome shit.

I’m so excited for the next installment Girl of Nightmares… I’ll be getting my hands on this ASAP. I would HIGHLY recommend this book.

First off, I feel I should discuss the cover art: I know, I know--everyone loves this cover. Unfortunately it doesn't do anything for me. Look, I stopped being ~~fooled~~ wowed by cover art after reading Fallen. That's a lie--the cover for the third Paranormalcy book makes me ridiculously happy, but at least I'm fairly certain I'll like that book since I like the first two books in the series.

I'm amazed I even survived the first half of this book. It was from sheer morbid curiousness that I even continued on. I wanted to know Anna's story and why Cass was so different from the rest.

Cassio is a ghost hunter, like his dad before him, but since he was killed by a job gone wrong, it's up to Cass to make sure he puts the dead to rest before they continue on their killing spree.
Cass and his mom find themselves in Thunder Bay (Ontario! Yikes) for Cass's next job. He has to find a girl who's called Anna Dressed in Blood. In the last 60 years, Anna's ruthless reputation for killing anyone who enters her home is exactly why Cass has to put a stop to it. So...why does she spare Cass when Anna knows he's there to kill her...?

So, I'm not even sure what else to say. This book is NOT a Tina book and I blame my dame curiosity for the nightmares that will come...which they will. But I will say this is a really good freaken horror story. Kendare Blake's writing is strong. To strong. She basically scared the shit of me. She doesn't hold back with the gore and gruesome scenes, and I couldn't help but picture it so vividly in my mind. This book is pure shutter-worthy and a littleteenytiny part of me kinda liked it, the other part, not so much.

I really did love Cass though. He's such a fun character, he's easy to relate too and his witty personality tended to ease a lot of the more intense scenes. He's also unintentionally funny. One of my favorite lines is when he was frustrated and nonchalantly said "Just let me kill you". I couldn't help but laugh at the ridiculous-but-dire situation he was in. He wants to revenge his dads death but he doesn't use that excuse on the job. He doesn't make it personal and doesn't enjoy it either which is pretty refreshing. What happened to Anna was just terrible and what she was propelled to do was just sick.
The plot changes up in the second half taking it to a new level of intrigue with the Obeahman. Funny enough, I kinda preferred it rather then endure Anna's wrath.

Over all, I can't say that I thoroughly enjoyed myself reading this book, since hiding in a pillow kinda takes away from the experience and all. I liked the way it ended but I'm still undecided if I want to read the next book in the series. I'm probably making a bigger deal then most other readers, but I guess it all depends on your comfort zone when it comes to horror. Obviously, I'm not good with it, but I will say that for anyone who wants a really good scary ghost story, then this is the book for you.
Yup. It might have scared the bejeezus out of me, but this was still some dame good storytelling!!

Anna Dressed in Blood, however, rises to the occasion and manages to give a good YA horror story for all of us readers who have been craving one.

Theseus Cassio Lowood – 'Cas' for short – is definitely not an ordinary teenage boy. While other boys spend their time on sports or video games, Cas uses his free time to research and hunt the lingering dearly departed. Forget dates with girlfriends: Cas has dates with violent ghosts...to extinguish them from this life so they can't leave any more blood and dead bodies in their wake. He inherited this legacy from his father, who died on duty ten years prior. Cas's life is consumed by the dead, and even his well-meaning mother can't dissuade him from continuing the legacy and ridding the world of one ghost at a time.

The pattern continues until one day Cas gets a tip he can't help but find intriguing: the story of a girl named Anna Korlov, nicknamed Anna Dressed in Blood, because she died in a blood-soaked white dress. Her murder has gone unsolved for decades, and her ghost still lingers within her family home near Thunder Bay, Canada. Whoever enters that house, whether a vagrant needing a place to sleep or a teenager on a dare, never comes back out. Even without much information to go on, Cas knows that hunting Anna will be a challenge, but little does he realize that me may be biting off more than he can chew with this particular ghost...

Anna Dressed in Blood shines as a story because it never does quite what you expect it to do. In first-person POV, Cas never sounds unrealistic as a teenage boy, nor does he fall into whiny or angst-ridden territory. Rather, he's exactly what I would expect from a teenage ghost hunter: he's smart and observant, but he's not full-proof with anything he does. All the other characters are refreshing as well and never fall into the pitfalls of stereotypes. But, of course, what impressed me the most were the horror movie-esque scenes filled with suspense, gore, and creeptastic vibes.

To be honest, I was so certain I would give this novel five stars simply because I enjoyed it so much, but then I reached the end of the book. Imagine, if you will, that a narrative is moving like a speeding train in its final chapter – but then, suddenly, the epilogue hits...and you find the train idling at the station and letting off passengers. After the fantastic climax, I felt disappointed by the epilogue, which felt more like an obligatory "Stay tuned!"-type ending rather than the contemplative ending I had been hoping to read. Don't just leave me stranded at the train station! (Okay, I took the train analogy too far.) I suppose I just expected more of a segue to bridge the gap between this book and the sequel, Girl of Nightmares. When that didn't happen, I felt lost.

Of course, my minor gripes with the ending don't lessen the fact that I highly recommend Anna Dressed in Blood. It does so many things well that it's easy to look over the few flaws it has. Though my feelings may be a bit too biased, I really do think that people who have been disappointed by other paranormal YA novels should give this book a try. You may not come away loving it, but hopefully there will be a fun, enjoyable reading experience in store for you.(less)

So we have Cas, aka Theseus Cassio Lowood, aka The Future Father of My Future Children. He’s a 17-year-old ghost hunter with a deadly knife and a chip on his shoulder. A ghost killed his daddy-also a ghost hunter-when he was a kid and now he’s determined to send all violent ghosts to the big haunted house in the sky. So Cas, his mother (who’s a white witch, how cool) and his mother’s cat travel the country looking for the ghosties. Everything’s peachy keen until he gets a tip about a creepy ghost called Anna Dressed in Blood. Something about this ghost is different. Something about this ghost is either going to give Cas affirmation that he’s ready to go after his father’s killer-or is going to meet Daddy on the other side. The thing I liked most about Cas was his authenticity. He’s not Superman. He’s not Mojo Jojo. He’s just an normal guy born into a frightening and abnormal world.

Who I picture as Cas

Then we have Anna. I like to think of her as Carrie, Undead Version. What Carrie would’ve been if she’d died after being drenched in pigs blood and decided to go ape shit on Chamberlain in all of her ghosty glory. Anna was murdered at 16 and has since viciously killed anyone who enters her house. So you think “good riddens” right? Put that ghost in the ground! But it’s not that cut and dry. The things that Anna went through while alive and the details that were revealed about her death made me sympathetic towards her character. But not too sympathetic. To quote Shannon, “Anna doesn’t fuck around”. I never forgot for one moment what this ghost is capable of and that she has committed truly horrible acts of violence.

Who I picture as Anna

In addition to Cas and Anna, there’s Thomas, a witchy telepath and Carmel, the “It Girl” at school. As they ran around Thunder Bay, Ontario, trying to find a way to eradicate Anna, I felt winded. As they realized there might actually be an enemy far worse, my heart jumped into my throat . My only issue with this book is the pace. After the first climax, ADIB became a little slow. The storyline chugged along rathering than racing. Other than that, no complaints. This is one of the rare occasions where I’m happy that most YA books turn into series, because I have definitely not had my fill of the amazing and creepy characters in this book. I urge you to give Anna Dressed in Blood a try-but only with the lights on.(less)

Anna Dressed in Blood is a ghost story wrapped up with love, friends, family, scares, chills, blood, and voodoo! Cas actually says it so much better:

“But hey, at least we’ll have this strange story to tell, love and death and blood and daddy issues.”

Theseus Cassio Lowood (Cas) is a hunter of evil, ghosts, and various big bads like his father before him. When we are introduced to Cas, he is set on killing Anna Korlov—Anna Dressed in Blood. Sounds like any other job on the surface, but nothing feels black and white on this one to Cas, which makes my heart very happy. Good vs. Evil should not be so clear cut. People and life do not work like that. Kendare Blake presents this struggle with such grace, beauty and pain. Can something made by evil be used for good? Can someone forced to do such evil make amends? Cas, Anna, and all the ghost busters will have to find out.

Cas and Anna could very well be the most adorable pair. When we first meet Cas, he possesses and portrays this just-swinging-through-town, cool as the other side of the pillow persona, but as the tale begins to come to light and friendships begin to form we see our hero’s heart. I loved the hands in his pockets, shuffling from foot to foot, blushing, tug on your heart Cassio that Anna brings out in him! It was done in such beautiful, subtle, flirty ways. I adored their time together.

I realize horror is not for every one, but the star of this show is Anna. She is a strong, beautiful, deadly, mysterious young woman who stands up for herself and the people she cares about. If you are anything like me, constantly hoping and searching for a strong heroine, look no further than Anna.

Anna Dressed in Blood became one of my favorite reads this year. It had everything I needed—from the scares and love to the little things that spoke to me. Any book that quotes Back to the Future, uses the word wonky, and throws in a shout out for Peter Venkman has a permanent spot in my heart and book shelf to read again and again!

I can’t wait to dive into Kendare Blake’s world again.
