I hate this type of situation.
The one where you loved the story itself, but can't give it more than an average rating because of reasons I will expound on.

Here's the deal: great story, mediocre writing.
And by mediocre I mean unpolished, at times awkward and often almost juvenile. You know what I'm talking about - exaggerated similes, slightly unnatural dialogue and all that jazz.

This is the first book of a mystery series.

I liked the mystery: a murder has been committed in an small town and Dave, who is now university student living openly in a big town, goes back home to investigate. His roommate and maybe friend Quinn goes with him out of curiosity but also because he wants to look after Dave- though he wonders why he cares; they are not even that close friends. The investigation is very amateurish - it's their first time to play amateur sleuths, but it's not

This is one of the best books I've read in quite awhile. The fact that it was free on Amazon was just a bonus. Every now and again I get lucky with a freebie. This is definitely one of those times.
