In this novel the author of "Bonjour Tristesse" and "A Certain Smile" employs the third person to paint a vivid picture of a group of artistic and intellectual Parisians. We are made painfully aware of the weakness of their individual identities and the lack of purpose in their lives. Even the 'positive' ambition of Beatrice is merely to mimic others as an actress. As the ...more

This is Francoise Sagan’s third novel. It is brief and focuses on the lives of a group of Parisians. It is well written and stylish and has a certain insightfulness about it; even if at times it seems a little slight and self-indulgent. It follows a group of people, mostly young (some married, some not) over about a year. They fall in and out of love with each other, betray each other and lie to each other. The rule of thumb is that if you fall in love with someone, they will inevitably

Láska nie je len dobrá. Niekedy vie všetko zničiť a ľuďom rozvrátiť ich pokojný život.

No muži tie chyby nevidia.

This book was relatively easy to read, so it gets stars for helping me keep up with my French.

The story itself is a soap opera of uninteresting youngish characters who talk, moan, sleep together (with nothing sexy about it), break up and wah wah wah... Some of the pitiable characters are barely placed in their scenes, and as far as French atmosphere goes, you may as well be on the empty stage of a college auditorium.

The book ends with a weak attempt at cynicism and philosophy.

The author's lif

Brilliant. Everyone's in love with someone else. A mixed canvas of pretentious and selfish characters, somehow managing to remain identifiable and empathetic. I loved Josée's unexpected affection for Jacques (a medical student she considers terribly unsophisticated). I loved the absolute boorishness of Bernard's affection for Josée. I loved Nicole's helplessness when it comes to Bernard. The relationship between Fanny and Alain (as Alain is just back from the war and they've both grown old in hi ...more

Dans un moise, dans un an:

If you are fascinated with French culture, literature, or simply Paris like me, I would definitely recommend checking out Francoise Sagan’s novels.

Sagan is an icon in contemporary world literature. Her novels encompass the easy, bourgeois lifestyle in Paris, where love is passionate, possessive, but often fleeting. Her characters are young and egoistic, used to the idle and carefree Paris life. However, their love affairs are trou

This is a very amusing and sharply insightful short novel about mismatched desire, youthful ambition and the vagaries of love. It's both very much of its time (it was published in 1957) and eternal.

Great to get acquainted with Sagan around the pool. Loved the writing more than the story.

It's good for me to read a book like this once in a while to remind myself that being heterosexual is also pretty terrible. There's a writer and an actress in this novel, but everyone seems to be playing a role, to be nothing more than a character or a part in other people's life; once the character has served its function... It goes away. Like love.

frivolity to younger generations adept to the nouvelle vague and related to older and younger generations, a refreshing view on the renegade perspective of a tired society. quite enjoyable due to the apparent lack on the reach of commitment, love and bonding within the human condition. a phenomenal work from the charmant petit monstre.

Тhe other books, I've read by Francoise Sagan, I liked much more. But certainly this is also not bad, style of writing is still beautiful, just there are more characters in it and the story is not so fascinating.

Born Françoise Quoirez, she grew up in a French, Catholic, bourgeois family. She was an independent thinker and avid reader as a young girl, and upon failing her examinations for continuing at the Sorbonne, she became a writer.

She went to her family's home in the south of France and wrote her first novel, Bonjour Tristesse, at age 18. She submitted it to Editions Juillard in January 1954 and it
