By far the best from the Elder Races novellas!
Let's start with Xanthe. We met her in Devil's Gate. She was the one who killed the bad guy. This story starts with her return to Other Land. She is an assassin who works for the Queen (aka Tricks) and her mate Tiago. But after her cover is blown she is reassigned to Tricks' protection. Usually she wouldn't be satisfied with the job - not enough action, but it gives her opportunity to see Aubrey, the Chancellor of the Dark Fey.

Quick & Dirty: Paranormal Fae romance between a soldier and a politician, filled with danger both in and out of the bedroom!

Opening Sentence: As soon as Xanthe reached Adriyel, she left her mount at the palace stable and sent a message to Her Majesty’s Chief of Security that said: “It is done.”

The Review:

Hunter’s Season is a wonderful look into the Other land, particularly the Dark Fae city of Adriyel. Xanthe, introduced in the previous novella Devil’s Ga...more

I can’t believe this is the last book in the arc of The Tarot’s Journey. I’m very disappointed in myself that this is my first and last chance with this story, however I’m glad I enjoyed HUNTER’S SEASON.

Like I said, I haven’t read the previous books in the novella and although other reviewers said Xanthe and Aubrey appeared in previous books, I think their past/history was given well in the story that I need not to ask. A standalone book really serves its purpose.

Xanthe is an assassin that’s swo...more

Hunter's Season is just one more book in the Elder Races series by Thea Harrison.
Xanthe is a soldier in the Dark Fae Army and loyal to the new Queen, Niniane. After completing a task for the Queen and Tiago,a Wyr lord and the Queen's mate, Xanthe is given a seven-day off to recover from the stress of the job. When she reports to the palace, she is surprised to find that the Queen wants her to become one of her trusted guards. At the same time, Xanthe is allowed to be in the company of the man...more

Dragon Bound was one of my favorite books of 2011, but after some disappointments with the series I started to think that it was one-hit wonder. I did enjoy Oracle’s Moon, though, so I keep reading the books. I’m happy to say that Hunter’s Season makes me feel hopeful that the magic is still there.

If you have read the previous books and novellas in the series, you know that Xanthe is an undercover guard for the Dark Fae court, and Aubrey Riordan is a...more

I just "discovered" Thea Harrison - you know how they always say "people who ordered this book also ordered ... " , well there were several books by Thea Harrison. I read 2 novellas Natural Evil(#2) and now Hunter's Season(#4). I truly like this author. The characters have depth, the stories are interesting and the world is well defined. Now, of course, I'll have to get novellas #1 & #3 not to mention the actual books. Ms Harrison's writing reminds of the styles of Ardath Mayhar, Mercedes La...more

I adore Thea Harrison and her Elder Races series. They add a refreshing mix to the paranormal genre. She writes heartwarming funny stories that rarely miss their mark. This is another solid addition to this series.

In this story I’m so glad we got to return to Tiago and Naida’s domain. I’ve missed them and seeing them did my heart some good.

However, these two while are scene stealers the story belongs to Xanthe and Aubrey and they can hold the story down on their own.
Xanthe has had a hard year...more

I'm not really a fan of Thea Harrison's novellas but since I've read all her other novellas and this was the only one left, I thought I may as well read it for completions sake.
Hunter's Season focuses on the romance between Aubrey, the chancellor of the Dark Fae, and Xanthe, an assassin and a soldier. The plot was pretty boring — after Aubrey's attacked, Xanthe looks after him and they fall in love. Considering this was a novella, I felt there was far too many mentions of Xanthe doing c...more

Very cute, probably the best of the ss so far. This was just a happy story. I love the name 'Xanthe', it brings back fond memories of my younger days reading Piers Anthony fantasy.

Xanthe has come home after the investigation from the last book. Queen Niniane's Chancellor, Aubrey, has been injured in a plot to kill him. She sees that Xanthe has a tenderness for him, and schemes to have them spend time alone together to face their feelings for each other. It was a sweet plotline, if a little obvio...more

What a wonderful love story. I enjoyed this last novella. It answers a few questions I had about those drastic tarot cards. I also got to see my favorite couple again: Tiago and Niniane.

Thea Harrison wove a beautiful love story between Chancellor Aubrey Riordan and Xanthe (who was introduced in Devil's Gate). I loved watching the slow dance of love between these two. It was not rushed so you were able to enjoy every minute of it. This novella is different from the others in that even though you...more

I read this series completely out of order and this novella was the one that got me started; although I enjoyed each book, I would have appreciated the character development and nuances if I had read the books in order. Having read this book first (and ironically all the others in reverse order due to library availability), I was not able to immediately appreciate the author's long-range plot development. As a full body of work, Thea Harrison's series is very complex and the books interlock well...more

This was so good. I really enjoyed how the characters really got to know each other. Often with novellas they just fall into lust and the next day they "love" one another.

Xanthe returns home after completing her mission. She had found a kitten and brought it home with her. Tiago shows up at her cottage and notes right off that the kitten is actually a Wyr kitten. He demands she shift and it turns out she's a little girl. Tiago takes her so to return her to the human world and her own kind. The...more

Short and sweet.

Most of the time, it's hard for me to get into a novella because of the length of the story. However, this novella was fun to read and the characters were well developed even with the brevity of the story. It does help that one of the main characters was partially developed in the the second book of the series.

Xanthe is an assassin who is loyal, patient, and very good at her job. She hero-worships Aubrey, whom we've met in "Storm's Heat," from a distance but once she is appoint...more

This is the fourth novella in the Elder Races series and finishes off the arc concerning the mysterious tarot cards. Niniane's assassin Xanthe has brought the pack of cards back to the lands of the Dark Fae and is soon directed to guard the injured Chancellor, Aubrey Riordan. The plot is primarily the growing love story between Xanthe and Aubrey however we see some snippets of Niniane and Tiago and their life in the Fae Court. The romance is sweet and handled well in the confined space of the no...more

Xanthe one of the best Dark Fae assassin but her identity has been compromised. Queen Niniane offers Xanthe a position in her royal palace guard. Xanthe jumps at the chance to serve the Queen.

Aubrey is the Chancellor to the Queen but he has been bitter since the betrayal of his wife. His wife tried to assassinate the Queen. Aubrey can’t help but be attracted to the new guard Xanthe but neither would ever act on their interest and compromise their positions…until Aubrey’s life is threatened and X...more

This is, by far, my favorite of Thea Harrison's three Elder Races novella and I'll tell you why: this is all the about the romance. And Harrison knows how to write romance. --That's not to say her action and adventure tales aren't fun, but in the love stories, she truly shines.

Our hero and our heroine both come from the Dark Fae world we got to know in Storm's Heart. Xanthe is an assassin for the Fae court. Queen Niniane dispatched her to America to find and dispatch the last of the traitors to...more

MinnChica: Since I first got my hands on Thea Harrison, the Elder Races has become one of my favorite paranormal romance series. Her novella’s from Samhain are such a treat to get while waiting for the next full length book to come out. I was excited to learn that we were headed back to the Dark Elven court to see Tricks and Tiago again, but also get to learn more about Aubrey, Chancellor to the Dark Elf court. I...more
Annie the Destroyer *Leather Lust*
Thea Harrison delivers a stellar HEA for two secondary characters in the Elder Races series. Xanthe, the assassin for the Dark Fae first introduced in Devil's Gate and Chancellor Aubrey Riordan from Storm's Heart come together to create a sweet, yet sizzling romance that will be sure to melt readers.

While the beginning is a little slow, Harrison delivers a beautifully bloomed romance between two vastly different characters. Their romance builds slowly, in a manner so sweet that readers may be su...more

Xanthe is a royal assassin servicing the dark fey queen and has come home after being sent to America on Tiago's orders to execute a mission.
The problem is her identity has been compromised and she must past on to another position. That position is the personal guard of Queen Niniane.

Meanwhile, Chancellor Riordan is attacked and is left for dead, but as he battles to live, Niniane and Tiago come up with a plan to protect him by sending him to Xanthe's cabin with her, making him disappear into th...more

Ohmigod!! I loved it!! I completely loved it!!!!

Thea Harrison has definitely sky-rocketed into my all-time favorite authors list!!

This short novella is EXACTLY the type of romance I love!! The sweet adorable kind of love story where the girl quietly loves from afar!!

Xanthe is an assassin, and one would think that would make her all hard-core and rough, but she's not at all like that! She's gentle, sweet, and so adorably flustered and shy when it comes to Aubrey.

And yes, I loved Aubrey too! He's...more

Best Elder Races novella yet.

In Six Words: Thea continues to delight and enthrall.

Novellas, despite their short length, are not easy to write. Erotica lends itself well to novellas because who needs the romance? It's about the dirt. But when it comes to writing a good romance novella--as Thea Harrison does--it is hard to present a believable romance in such a limited amount of space. And with each successive Elder Races novella, Thea Harrison continues to bring the romance (and yes, some sex, to...more

Hunter's Season Another Elder Races novella from storyteller, Thea Harrison that's well worth the read. In this installment, which starts as DEVIL'S GATE ends, we learn more about the Dark Fae royal guard and assassin Xanthe and the Royal Councilor, Aubrey. When Aubrey is attacked, Queen Niniane (aka Tricks from previous books) and Tiago, thunderbird wyr and former sentinel to Dragos, assign Xanthe to protect him and nurse him back to health. This is a complicated story, and one that helps to ha...more

I actually finished this in a day, but never got around to writing a review. I did really like the story though, and thought that it was the best saved for last of Harrison's Tarot connected Elder Races shorts. There wasn't a great deal of conflict between the leads so it was more exploration and growth of their romance and that made it the sweetest romance of the bunch. I really liked both of the leads, I loved the kitten and seeing Tricks and Tiago. I do agree with someone's nit that the resol...more

Xanthe, Dark Fae Assassin, returns to Adriyel to report the success of her mission to Niniane & Tiago. She soon finds herself in protection duty while Chancellor Aubrey Riordan heals from an assassination attempt. Aubrey has always been loyal to the royal family but his young wife was power hungry and ambitious. She was in league with others to assassinate Niniane so her husband could become King unknown to him. Her family seeks to eliminate him by legal and illegal means to restore their ho...more

This is one of my favorite Elder Races novella's to date. I wouldn't have pictured Aubrey as a hero, but he definitely pulled it off. The romance in HUNTER'S SEASON packs a lot of punch, mainly due to Harrison's elegant pacing. She sets up a well written backdrop, then zooms in on the couple to let their emotions develop. The balance of power and personalities in this story are particularly interesting. Once again, Harrison has written sex scenes that are not just hot but perfect for her charact...more

Assassin turned guard, Xanthe protects the Dark Fae Queen. She's by her side when attending events and meetings, including the ones with Chancellor Aubrey Riordan. Handsome and powerful, a simple commoner like herself shouldn't fantasize about a man like Aubrey but when someone tries to kill him, Xanthe alone will be charged with his safety. Aubrey is still saddened by the betrayal of his wife when she tried to assassinate Queen Niniane. Xanthe is the first woman he has cared for since and knows...more

HUNTER’S SEASON (Elder Races #4.7 or Tarot Card #4) by Thea Harrison

HUNTER’S SEASON is the 4th storyline in Thea Harrison’s Elder Races Tarot Card series of novellas. The powerful Tarot Cards have made their way through a series of mishaps and adventures, and in each storyline, the cards have either hindered or helped the immortal in question. Hunter’s Season will find the Dark Fae and assassin warrior Xanthe as she returns home to the Fae colony outside of Chicago. Having completed her most rec...more

A very nice little novella. This was mainly a love story, with very little in the way of "action scenes", but given the length, that was fine. You never really get bored with it as you watch the relationship between two very different personalities bloom. My only complaint is that the heroine's character was better defined than that of the hero. In his case, the author reminds us occasionally that his actions are out of the norm for him, but I never really felt she established the "norm" well en...more

I write paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and other stuff. I taught myself to read when I was four. That was around the time I tried to ride my tricycle to work. I wasn't sure where work was, but I knew it had to be interesting if people went there every day. Now I combine my love of books with work, and I don't have to ride my tricycle to get there. My Elder Races series began May, 2011. You can...more

“Xanthe, you are the most beautiful surprise in my life. I hardly noticed you at first. You carry the quiet of a river with a still surface that runs very deep. I found that the more I looked at you, the more I saw—and now the more I see of you, the more beautiful you become and the more I want you.” He paused then said deeply, “I’ve never wanted anyone the way I have grown to want you.” 3 people liked it
