This is not the type of book I would usually pick up, but I read Maureen Johnson's blog and love it so much that I had to read one of her books. My library only had Devilish so I thought I would give it a shot. Well, I started last night and finished before lunch today. It was an excellent light read-- plot was good and captivating, I could relate to the main character (though perhaps not her situation ;)) and the Maureen Johnson humour that I love in her blog shone through. Definitely recommend...more
This book was about Jane (the protag) and a demon. What makes the whole situation personal, is the fact that Ally, Jane's best friend, sold her soul to this demon which in turn is the devil. Predictably it's up to Jane to get her friend out of the crappy situation, because Jane is the 'fixer'. Ally turns on Jane for beauty, grace and wealth.
Jane goes to a Catholic girls' school, and there's this whole secret realm of dead-but-living 'people' who either want to sell human souls/take peoples' life...more

It took me a little while to get into the meat of this book, but once I did, it had me hooked.
Jane's best friend Allison is acting strangely. Once a meek and geeky girl, Allison has transformed into a sleek, stylish, self-assured senior. And she's dating Jane's ex! Something dark is afoot in Providence and Jane is going to figure it out.
Jane, as the main character, could have been more defined. We only see her surface for most of the story, and while she is depicted as smart and quirky--in a Ver...more

I loved this book. I borrowed it from the library but have since purchased it so I can make notes in the margins. I am a writer myself so I like to study great works of literature. In my opinion this is one of them. I was skeptical when I heard people say such things as "I couldn't put it down." because we all know, everyone says that. I'm not a stay-up-late-to-find-out-the-ending type of person but with this book, I just couldn't stop. It has a wonderful plot that keeps you in suspense right up...more
I have to admit something to all of you. When I first picked this book up from my pile of award nominees I had very low expectations for it. I thought it was going to be terrible. I really did. I'm not sure why I thought this. Perhaps it had to do with the cover, which, while perfectly fitting for the story itself, would never have grabbed my interest in the book store--not in a million years. This has a lot to do with the fact that the story is more aimed, in my opinion, towards teenage girls....more
Looking for something light to read yet a supernatural book filled with strange twists and turns ? Devilish by Maureen Johnson , shows the sweet yet sickly and twisted minds of demons even worse when they take the body of a teenage girl and pretend to be your friend. Something strange is going on at Jane's school and she can't exactly put her finger on the pulse , but lately her best friend Alison is slipping away from her and becoming -well ... Popular and if you knew Allison then you would be...more
This was a totally weird, fun read. Knowing Maureen Johnson's work (and totally loving her sense of humor) meant that there was no way I could resist her book about what happens when Satan (or rather, a mid-level employee of the corporation that makes up Hell) comes to an all-girls Catholic school. I passed it over a few times in favor of shinier, newer books, but every time I went to the bookstore, it was in the back of my mind until I was driving myself crazy wanting to read it. And, to be fai...more

I was introduced to DEVILISH by a certain someone. The day I saw that tweet she made, thunder sounded in the distance and I got shocked by current while baking cookies. I suppose I should have seen the signs then, but what do they say about cookies?
Join the dark side, we have em. ;)
It is charming, funny and what I liked best was that it didn't take itself too seriously. This is due to Jane's outlook. At first glance, she's like one of those scientists that everyone talks about: intelligent, look...more

This book was totally not what I expected but I really liked it.
When I sat down to read it I was ready for a very different type of book then it actually was. I've read other books by Maureen Johnson and I hadn't read the summary on the back. I thought it would be a girly romance type book without anything paranormal. So, the demon/devil character was a surprise for me.

I follow Maureen Johnson in Twitter & enjoy her posts immensely; I've been meaning to read one of her books for ages but had had trouble tracking them down. (Possibly because I was only looking in Borders, which hadn't at that time restocked since sometime last year - I had a voucher, OK?!).
Initially I was worried she would be one of those authors I think is a brilliant person but who's writing isn't my cup of tea (see also Val McDermid). The start was kind of over the top and didn't make mu...more

Don't you crave cupcakes just looking at this cover? I know I do. Devilish is a paranormal YA novel that avoids being teeny-bopperish by a dark mood and a rather sophisticated writing style.
The protagonist, Jane, is a bright but troubled student at a parochial school for girls. She's always looking out for her slower-and-less-popular friend Allison, until the day when Allison suddenly doesn't need her help anymore. Jane feels perplexed, then alarmed by all the changes happening in Allison's life...more

SO! I know i've been terrible about updating this summer, and for that, i apologise. I've been crazy busy lately, i start college in three weeks and this whole summer has been preparing for it and such.
Anyway, let's get this rolling, shall we?
Maureen Johnson, can i start with her? And talk about how it's my life goal to be like her when i grow up? (except my books will be fantasy books ;) If i turn out a fraction as awesome as her, then i'll be happy. Not only is she a nerdfighter, she's probabl...more

This book was GOOD, and I do mean it.
Compared to other books that include teenagers that made bargains with the devil this one stood out by a lot.
Jane is a character most/all girls can relate too, so that's good because she wasn't some kind of alien girl that was completely different from people you might know.
The way Jane's friend threw up on the cupcake and ended up turning the whole story in the direction it was supposed to go rather impressed me. It's not in every book you have a secondary c...more

I felt that this book was much more aimed at teenage girls than many of the "YA" writers that I typically read. In the end I did end up enjoying this book, however party because I felt it was aimed at someone younger than myself, it took me a while to get into this book. (Which isn't actually a bad thing, as it is a YA book.) I am ok with the premise of a book being a bit out there if the story behind it makes it believable. I felt as if this story needed just a bit more to make the pr...more I...more

After too-smart-for-her-own-good Jane’s best friend Allison humiliates herself at their all-girl school’s Big-Little event, the Allison Jane knows disappears. All of a sudden Allison has cute clothes, a new hairstyle, and a trendy cell phone. She’s also hanging out with a new sophomore, Lanalee. With their friendship teetering, Jane finds out, with the help of a freshman boy, that Allison has sold her soul to the devil, who is masquerading as a—you guessed it—sophomore at Saint Teresa’s.

From the beginning, I have shied away from the YA shelves, mostly based on Twilight (which I enjoyed but didn’t love) and one failed attempt at reading a Sarah Dessen book. I don’t like vampires, I don’t like demons and I am really quite a few years past angst. Also, for the most part, I don’t really like love stories. In books, they’re too easy (or too hard due to aforementioned demons). In YA stories, the young women are painted as girls as opposed to strong people and I just don’t think that...more

I picked up this book because I follow Maureen Johnson on Twitter and think she is one of the funniest people around. Her humor is much in evidence in this book, a great supplement to the supernatural plot. A lot of YA supernatural novels are overwrought and melodramatic, but this one has a great, light feel to it that I think is a great compliment to the actual stakes in the story.

In Devilish, Jane’s best friend, Ally, is having a pretty rough time. She got stood up for the junior prom and now, on Big-Little Day (when freshmen choose seniors to be Big to their Little), Ally got a less than glowing review from the Junior Judges, an unknown group of juniors who judge the seniors. Things start to look up for Ally but quickly go downhill when something disastrous happens during the selection process. Surprisingly, the next day Ally shows up and is transformed; new hair, cloth...more
It all started with a cupcake...
Well, not really. It started at prom night, when Alison's date never came. Stood up by a guy off the internet, the shame! And then Jane's boyfriend of just over seven months broke up with her and started ignoring her even as a friend. And then the cupcake. And Ally's puke all over the freshman. And then Ally's new haircut. And then Jane found out that her best-and-only friend was dating her ex, but also had sold her soul to the devil.

Again, this was a book I just pulled off the library shelves because I needed a book to read. I'm beginning to think I should do it more often. I'm finding some great books that way. Anyway, I'd seen this one a number of times, and Maureen Johnson's a good writer. I couldn't really turn it down (when I didn't have any other books in my hands).

Oh, it was a while ago when I read this book. I'm talking years ago, but I do remember what happened and why I didn't like it as much as MJ's other books. I'm pretty sure that it's because it lacked the overall MJ-ness of it all. That special spark that's in all of her books, and I think it was missing because it's written in first-person. I mean, I loved her story in Let It Snow, but I just didn't like this narration that well. Jane is a likable character (all of them are actually), but when it...more
So I love Maureen Johnson's personality. I've only had a chance to read a few of her books but I've noticed a certain disparity between her ability to be the best writer ever and actual evidence of that. For instance, I loved The Name of the Star but was underwhelmed by 13 Little Blue Envelopes. I still liked it, sure, but the pacing and the characters were so very different from NoTS and MJ's wonderful zany Twitter delightfulness. I figured that it could have just been a sort of chronological d...more

In the end it was used for me to right stories, whatever came to mid was written in this section. This is what Devilish makes me think of.
