As an educator, I often find myself reading professional texts that take me to a classroom setting wherein mistakes are made and analyzed. The authors offer their advice for fixes; lessons that foster comprehension and anecdotes for what we may encounter in urban, charter, public, rural, and suburban schools. The authors offer their advice for fixes; lessons that foster comprehension and anecdotes for what we may encounter in urban, charter, public, rural, and suburban schools. These texts are mostly engaging and are invaluable for any educator, but it’s common to find yourself nodding along saying, “I do that,” or “Oh, how true that is,” or “That’s just like the lesson I have.” It’s hard to learn if you aren’t confronted with something that challenges your thinking.

Therefore it’s refreshing to come across a novel that offers a look at education in a wholly new and philosophical lens. Lost Apple by Iain Coggins is a story that focuses on educational practices and encourages readers to formulate truths about the condition in which we currently find our system, which is a breath of fresh air among all the stale alternatives.

Following modern day educators Frank, Paul, Arianna and Jan through Tim Schimmel’s Lost Apple Theme Park is like walking into a modified lucid dream. At points the reader is actively involved and examining suppositions aroused by the philosophical content, but then quickly whisked back into a fictional reality made eerily potential by the dynamic and authentically flawed teacher characters. As they are led through the park and to the various follies that Schimmel has strategically placed, the reader is presented with something to ponder. The park employees are an interesting bunch, guiding the tour group through their region of the park, offering up their interpretations, sharing truths, and yet there is an underlying deceptive component to their involvement with Schimmel.

I found myself having “Ah ha” moments throughout the novel. The kind we wish our students had on a regular basis. Seeing my reflection, the teacher, in this story was such a different experience then seeing myself in the “normal” pedagogical texts. I looked good, rejuvenated in my profession, and feeling like the daily decisions I make as an educator are having positive influences despite what standardized tests might assume about my classroom. Just like in the nature of a true Socratic seminar, and to my benefit, I left this encounter with more questions than answers. I think that Coggins gives educators an interesting look at their profession, and I know I will revisit this novel often during my career.
