by
James R. Tuck (Goodreads Author)

Deacon Chalk rarely takes time out of monster hunting, but in Spider’s Lullaby he is out on the town with Tiff, a woman who is learning his trade, and Charlotte, a were-spider friend. When the night is over, they return to Charlotte’s house that she shares with other were-spiders only to find the inhabitants dead, Charlotte’s egg-sac and Chalk’s friend Ronnie missing. Everything would be okay, except for one big catch – if Charlotte’s not there to imprint on the babies when they hatch, they will...more

Quick & Dirty: Big bad monster killer rushing to the rescue not only for one of his employees, but to also stop a hoard of potentially lethal spiders. Another great short story starring my favorite Occult Bounty Hunter, Deacon Chalk.
Opening Sentence: Charlotte’s front door was open.
The Review:
Deacon Chalk, Occult Bounty Hunter, is back and on the hunt. Someone has messed with his people and he is not a man that will stand for that kind of crap. With the he...more

James R. Tuck sent me this e-novella in his Deacon Chalk series. It gives a good taste of what the full-length novels are like. The story is pretty straightforward. Deacon, Charlotte and Tiff are out for a night on the town. When they return to Charlotte's it is to discover that someone has broken in, killed all of the other people who lived in the house, stolen Charlotte's egg sack, and kidnapped the egg sack's baby sitter. Did I mention that Charlotte was a were-spider with flesh melting venom...more

Okay, I think I can start this one now. This book takes place after Blood and Bullets. I got the first since UF is not usually a genre you can read out of order. Plus, it might make a few of you faint. ;) In this case although I was glad I read that first book, I need not have worried. You can read this one as a stand a lone and still know what is going on. Plus, what is also good about this novella is that it is the perfect length for this story. I think that is be...more

Amazing read! Loved every second, every word every scene...LOOOVED IT.
Deacon Chalk is my absolute favorite assassin. He's a bad ass, funny as hell, but trustworthy and dependable guy that will protect you with his last breath. I love the sense of humor in this series, it never fails to have me giggling. I love the action, it's on the edge of your seat, makes you talk out loud encouraging the characters to keep going. And the characters are never dull and boring, they are true to their personalit...more

Mini-Review: This novella is definitely a nice way to get your Deacon fix while waiting for book two, which releases in August. I really enjoyed learning more about the were-spiders. They're definitely an underused were-creature in urban fantasy. And of course, Deacon was totally badass. The novella was a quick read (I read it in an afternoon), but nothing about it came across as rushed. I liked learning more about Charlotte, the were-spider we met in book one. She's definitely an intriguing cha...more

I really enjoyed the prequel novella and first book in this series, so I was excited about reading this one too.
Deacon Chalk kills monsters. He's been doing it for a while. So when a night out with two of his friends turns into a search and rescue, he'll do anything he has to in order to find out who took Charlotte's unhatched baby spiders. And it becomes a race against the clock, which takes them through the underworld of assassins and leads to a very dangerous demon.
This was another great addi...more

Deacon Chalk is an Occult Bounty Hunter. He’s the guy you call when monsters need killing. Not all monsters are bad though and when Deacon, his apprentice/friend Tiffany and a Were-spider named Charlotte get back to Charlotte’s place after a night on the town they find all of the Were-spiders in her cluster dead, her egg sac gone and Ronnie, the egg sac babysitter for the night, missing, too. With Charlotte predicting the egg sac of spiders will hatch around dawn they have only a few hours to fi...more

If you want a little taste of what the Deacon Chalk series is all about, it’s definitely worth giving SPIDER’S LULLABY a try. It’s a novella that takes place between Blood and Bullets and Blood and Silver, but to be honest I think you could easily pick it up as a stand-alone. There are a few references, but nothing that would spoil things for you.
The story evolves around one of my reluctant favourite characters. I say reluctant, because as a terrible ar...more

I liked this short, like the transition that Deacon seems to be going through as he realizes that it is ok for him to rebuild his life after his family was murdered. I love how those that Deacon cares about become important to him and that he will do anything for them. He proves this by helping Charlotte and going after Ronnie. I also really like how Tiff is not fazed by Deacon’s life. All in all this one ended about as well as it could.
This book was a great fit for the series: fast, fun, furious and full of attitude. The action is nonstop, and there is never a dull moment. The novella length offer a great read that left me craving a full length story.
I will admit that I was worried about a story about were-spiders because spiders are creepy and gross. But there was no need to worry because the spiders played more of a supporting role as victims rather than a centre stage role. That’s not to say that aren’t creepy, especially t...more

I write DARK URBAN FANTASY. It is gritty, it is violent, it is bloody, it is DARK. The monsters are monstrous and they do Very Bad Things. The good guys are Big Damn Heroes.
