Good and entertaining, but it could have been freaking awesome.

I'm actually a bit disappointed because there was so much potential here. Dark and scary and kicking assery awesome. Unfortunately, it falls into some well-trodden tropes that a 'mean' editor or beta reader should have red-lined. I mean really, evil secret government military experiments?

Wow. Truthfully, shapeshifters have never been my favourite read no matter how popular and hot they are written but Mina Carter made this right. Lillian was a very entertaining and funny heroine. The plot to this story sounded great, the reviews are pretty good and I didn't check out the reviews like I should have, because even with those two things combined this book had serious flaws. Now mind you, I did finish this book and in the end it was worth it and I may even read the next one to see if the author has learned from her mistakes. I actually blame the beta readers for not bringing these things to the authors attention.

What's particularly refreshing about this book is the break it provides from the softer side of paranormal romance. Sometimes, you really want a little edge with your fangs and claws—and not just the quasi-BDSM bedroom games that pop up in most paranormal romances today. I mean, blood and guts and bullets flying. And for that, there's nothing like a pack of military elite soldiers who just also happen to be angry werewolves. Throw in a cool-as-bloody-ice vampire assassin and some fresh-from-the-lab zombies, and you've got yourself a party.

Perfect Mate is a vividly engaging story that won't disappoint. It's sexy as hell, incredibly well-written, hilariously funny at times... and it has an exceptionally hot guy on the cover. Needless to say, I loved it. You better believe I'll be racing to get my hands on the next book, Blood Mate, which is currently a work-in-progress.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked up this book as I’ve never read anything written by Mina Carter (“Carter”). After reading “Perfect Mate,” and thoroughly enjoying it, I can tell you that she’s got a new fan.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked up this book as I’ve never read anything written by Mina Carter (“Carter”). After reading “Perfect Mate,” and thoroughly enjoying it, I can tell you that she’s got a new fan.

Unlike the familiar themes associated with paranormal novels, Carter pulls in paranormal elements (lycans, vampires, and zombies), creating something a little off the beaten path. In doing so, she successfully keeps the reader engaged and intrigued by the story.

A secret group of scientists, deep with the government, have been conducting insidious experiments on military soldiers and on other unwilling participants who have been misled about the “project”. The “project” consists of injecting test subjects with one of three strains of virus turning them into lycan, vampire, or zombie. Once turned, more experiments are conducted, all the while making sure the test subjects never leave the premises, ever. The only way out is with a bullet in the back of the head.

After a year of acting and displaying in accordance with what the project scientists expect of them as lycans, Captain Jack Harper and his platoon, executing their plan of escape, are now battling their way out of the facilities. In the midst of their fight to leave, Jack grabs Dr. Lillian Rosewood, whom Jacks claims as his mate.

What I really like about this novel is the way Carter utilizes the other men in the platoon, not centralizing only on Jack and Lillian. This also includes Antonio, whom I find to be a very intriguing and complex individual. She was once a soldier but is now a vampire. Her directive is to find and destroy the lycans using soldiers and zombies (I know. Sounds odd). There’s more to Antonio than meets the eye. All of this is what make the story even more enjoyable.

Why 4 stars, not 5? Others may disagree after reading this book, but I felt there was a little lull in the buildup of the battle between the lycans, vampires and zombies. Also, the one factor I find very irritating that I find in a majority of books, this one included, is the declaration of love between the hero and heroine in a matter of hours. In less than 36 hours of meeting, Jack and Lillian profess their love for one another. I understand these stories are works of fiction. However, this quick declaration of love taints my enjoyment of the story. I’ve got nothing against the protagonists saying “I love you,” but let’s at least make it seem more realistic.

Otherwise, this is a novel that should be read by all paranormal lovers. I look forward to the next book in the series.

I’m not pissing them for anyone!” Jack is the classic protector Alpha but he tempers it with love and respect for Lilly. I think it’s remarkable that this romance develops both sexually and emotionally given the danger the couple is in throughout the novel.

What I Also Liked: I also love the world building here. A virus created by the military transforms infected humans into three possible beings. They’re all unique and whet my appetite for more novels set in this great world.

The secondary characters are also captivating. I don’t want to say too much about them since it may spoil the plot a bit but they’re a great combination of entertaining and heartwarming. Again, it’s amazing that the author developed meaningful secondary characters within the danger plot and still kept the romance focus.

What I Didn’t Like: But as much as I love this novel, there are two little things that when combined made me deduct half a frog from the book. First, the ending was just too abrupt. I wanted even a paragraph more resolution between Jack and Lilly. I thought I was missing a page on my e-reader and went back three times to reread the ending and still felt it was missing something. Second, a teaser romance is set up here and anyone who’s read my reviews knows that’s a pet peeve of mine. I want authors to rely on strength of storytelling to get me to read the next book, not use a ploy. I even really liked the teaser romance and the characters and look forward to their story but don’t tease, it isn’t nice!

IMO: I really enjoyed this funny romantic paranormal set in a great world. Anyone looking for a good read should pick this up. I know I’ll be awaiting the rest in the series.(less)

I enjoyed reading this novel. It took a bit for me to get into it, but once I got a 1/3 into the book or so, it was a page turner.

I did think that the novel had an abrupt ending to Lillian and Jake's situation. I feel as if the next novel might be about another member of the pack and his/her mate (honestly, I have no idea). It was just awful! The moment I realized the book was finished and I would have to wait for the next in the series to be written I wanted to throw myself on the floor kicking and screaming.

I figured it would be something similar to Lora Leigh's series however it was original and nothing like it which is what gave me the incentive to move it from one star to two. Darce has a warped sense of humor...which I loved! He was a great character to read. I’m really looking forward to his book.

I loved the relationship between Lilly and Jack. He was so worried that she would be scared of or repulsed by his wolf, but she loved him for who he was, not what he was. I hope that in future books we get more from them. (view spoiler)

This is definitely a series I’ll continue with.

I liked the idea but there wasn't really an end. I guess you could say it was rushed but it ruined what up till that point had been a decent story. If she does other books in this story arch it might help. I enjoyed the characters but I hated that it would switch back to Antonia. Antonia and Darcy really need their own book. I'm not sure I will be reading anything more by Carter. She has great ideas but lacks in finishing the last third of her books.

What can I say well it was an unusual book but I have to say I Loved It!I gave it 4 stars as it took me a couple of chapters to get a better umderstanding of the story.There were really funny bits, bits that made me cry(like when Antonia had to kill Garry,tears streamed down my face).I loved the all the characters in the wolf pack and at some stage hopefully if there is/when there is I will love Antonia as well.Hopefully there's a book 2!

I really enjoyed this one. A different take on vamps and wolves. But I absolutely hated the zombies. They totally ruined the story for me.

The zombies also made no sense. Why have these things running around killing everything when humans are so much more efficient.

Because of that I will not be reading any further books in this series, if there is one.

I will say that this one is more bloody than the ones I have read. I didn't really like the characters or how they treated the vampires, lycans, and zombies. In the end this one just wasn't for me.

I wanted to love this book but it left me wanting. There was a ton of action but little in the build up between Jack and Lillian. Usually I'm all about instant mating in a shifter book but they usually build up emotions and you don't really see that in this book and that makes me a sad panda.

Overall it was a great read with a ton of action and some suspense. A very original plot amongst scifi/ub genre. I will more than likely pick up the next book in hopes of feeling the love connection more.

More character development....more cohesiveness to the two stories being told....more believability to the instant love between the lead characters.....just more story! So this was an good read. But I had problems with it. The first problem was a huge chunk of this story was given to a secondary character who did not even tie in to the orginal one till toward the end. I found reading her parts frustrating and soon got to where I was skimming those parts thus making this story shorter in doing so but it was so irritating to be constantly taken from the main story line. I tried to finish but this but it didn't hold my interest. I think it started when a good deal of time was spent on a secondary character the vampire Major Antonia Fielding. It irritated me I just wanted it over with so I could read about the H/h. I understand why she's got a lot of page time it gives you details on the "project" still didn't like it though, it could have been saved for a book about her. Probably a 3.5 star read. I liked the idea and a lot of it however there were some things that ended up being a bit too coincidental. I also thought the heroine moved from shock to acceptance and comfort too quickly. I will probably check out the next one because this is certainly set up in a series.

The thought that vampires, lycanthropes, and zombies are all created by drugs was pretty neat.
