A little confusing in the beginning, many characters and many different strands to this story. Easier for me since I have read this series from the beginning so was at least familiar with many of the detectives and police officers. Erica and Patrick and their friends and families. This is a slow burner, a missing person case, a friend of Erica getting a book contract but also receiving threatening notes. All parties involved claim not to know anything, are harboring secrets. Bits and pieces are ...more

Camilla Läckberg, an international bestselling Swedish author, has penned yet another bone-chilling thriller, The Drowning in the Fjällbacka/ Patrik Hedström series, and this book is the sixth in the series. This story revolves around a debut author when he publishes his book, followed by threatening letters and that also jeopardized the lives of people in his whol

‘The hidden child’ was such a huge success by the author Camilla Lackberg, that much anticipation and expectation proceeded it with standards raised high, so that ‘the drowning’ was met by many adoring fans and harsh critics. After seeing Camilla Lackberg on the UK television show ‘the TV book club’ on channel 4, I already felt as a consequence of this very familiar with the author before I began to read her work and open the pages of the eagerly awaited new crime novel. But it did not prepare m ...more

Jeez, I'm glad I'm finally done with this.

I've really enjoyed all the other Camilla Läckberg books before but this one bored me and it seems to be never-ending.

The storyline wasn't that bad (it wasn't brilliant but I've seen worse) but it was dragging on and on and on...

Two annoying things:
- Erica was in the background most of the time and when she was written about, she was always being nosy and putting her nose where it didn't belong.

- What happened to Martin? In all the previous books, he w
I've been a big fan of Camilla Lackberg's work since reading the first installment in the Patrik Hedstrom series. Nevertheless, I have to admit that her last two offerings, 'The Gallows Bird' and 'The Hidden Child', have
disappointed slightly. The plots seemed to lack subtlety and the twists were fairly obvious. I am delighted to report, then, that 'The Drowning' is a definite return to form.

The mystery centres around Christian, Fjallbacka's enigmatic and brooding

4.5 *s. I am a huge Camilla Lackberg fan and The Drowning did not disappoint. This story has a lot of characters which is a little confusing at first, but they are all important to the story so just be patient with it. As usual, Lackberg's crime fiction is complex and has a lot of depth. It builds slowly and does not rush. I really enjoyed the crime and psychological aspects of this book. I would not however recommend this one as a standalone. As the 6th in the series, we are well acquainted wit ...more

No entanto, nunca consegui atribuir 5* a nenhum...

What a cliff hanger. You have to read the next book to find out whats happened!!!!

Camilla Läckberg weaves her magic again in the beautiful setting of Fjällbacka, where amid routine domestic life the most horrible things seem to happen.
Erica has been encouraging a librarian friend to finish his book; they share a publisher and this is Erica's angle into the story. Despite being pregnant with twins she seems to have more energy than Patrik her detective husband who is despirng over the lack of a missing persons case where ever week for the past 3 months the spouse has visited th
I think this is something that always happens with Swedish authors: somehow, at the end of the book, when the tension is at its highest level, suddenly everything vanishes, and the end comes predictible and short. In this book, Läckberg managed the tension in an exceptional way; I personally didnt have a clue about who the killer was, and that was exciting. But the ending came out so suddenly that I feel that I could not enjoy it as much as I could have. I don't know, maybe I am still stuck with ...more

The plot and story were really entertaining, I read without problem always eager to solve the mystery and with that tension that is perfect in crime books. However I got annoyed by the amount that characters the author decides to describe when they are not crucial for the story, I ended up confusing who was the son of who and targeting the characters that were actually relevant.

I was also annoyed at the end of the book when the author decided to give patrick a heart attack, crash the ca
It's a mood piece. Although you catch up with Patrik and his wife and most of their extended families in the wider sense, and also with Annika and numerous other work related mates- it isn't their story that dominates. It's the sick mind of the boy whose thoughts appear between- within the sections printed in italics.

This was a book I read over weeks, although I didn't list it right away. It was easily taken up and put down. I felt no urgency whatsoever, and truth be known, didn't know if I woul

If you want a good old fashioned whodunit with plenty of twists and turns believable characters both nice and nasty, you may well want to choose this book.
Set in Fjallbacka, a small coastal town in Sweden, four friends appear to have attracted the attention of a killer, the mystery is why! Magnus is missing, Christian has been receiving anonymous letters since he began work on his newly published novel, The Mermaid, Erik is tangled up in affairs and Kenneth is coping with his wife's illness and

Finding Camilla Lackberg's books in New Zealand isn't easy but I lucked out and found The Drowning in our local library, and damn pleased I did. This is another slice of life from her regular character Detective Patrik Hedstrom and again it proves the point that she is one of Sweden's hottest crime writers at the mo. Yes, its dark, and yes its a powerful psychological thriller. The story begins with local writer Christian Thhydell realising his dream with the launch of his first novel The Mermai ...more
I picked this book up on a whim – the front cover had caught my attention and the first page made me curious. Never having read any of Camilla Lackberg’s writing before I was in for quite a ride! “The Drowning” is written in the perspective of multiple people and has a dual story line (e.g. one based on memories, flashbacks and another based on a present day murder mystery). The intertwining of characters and stories sets a fast pace and motivates the reader to plunge further into the novel’s de ...more

I did enjoy this 6th installment in the Patrik Hedström/Erica Falck series, but found it much more sad and dark than the previous two books, which I adored, and it lacked the development of the recurrent characters that made book 5 such a joy to me. I also am very anxious about the ending and will be worried about it until the English translation of book 7 comes out! Camilla Läckberg is a formidable talent, she did keep me guessing with this book even longer than usual, and I read it very quickl ...more
This is the seventh book in the Patrik Hedstrom series and it is just as good as all the others. This time the story revolves around four friends who are dragged into a conspiracy of threats, lies and cover-ups stemming from their childhoods with deadly consequences. This story is driven more by the human element than previously but this doesn't detract from the mystery and suspense but rather adds an extra dimension. And while some elements can be solved as the story continues the finale is une ...more
A really interesting page-turning thriller that you just can't put down until the end. I would like to give this 3.5 stars, but can't go as far as 4 stars, because there are two things I didn't like about "The Drowning". It is a much darker novel than Camilla Läckberg's previous ones, and in my opinion, bordering on to horror (a genre I really don't like at all, but that's just personal taste). Also, she uses the technique of cliffhanger paragraphs then changing to another part of the story a bi ...more
I was worried Camilla Lackberg might have peaked because her last book (The Hidden Child) was so good I was curious about how this book was going to compare. The good news was that I loved this book. It was a genuine I-cannot-put-the-book-down read.

The small-town world she creates for her characters is wonderfully drawn, I love the lead characters and the mystery was well created, although a touch bizarre.

There is a bit of a shock at the end with the lead characters. Bring on the next book! I wa

Wow! I've always thought that Laeckberg was good, but this is truly one of the very best books in Scandinavian crime thriller literature. Why haven't ALL the Patrik Hedstroem books been translated yet??

Scandinavia exports as many thriller writers as Japan exports cars — or so it would seem. Here comes Camilla Lackberg on the heels of . . . well, if you read crime fiction, you’re familiar with the authors of the many Scandinavian thrillers that have cracked the U.S. bestseller lists. (Oh, okay: Stieg Larsson, Henning Mankell, Jo Nesbo, Jussi Adler-Olsen, Per Wahloo and Maj Sjowall . . . need I go on?) And, even though I’ve just discovered Ms. Lackberg, it turns out that The Drowning is the sixt ...more
