Reviewed for On a Book Bender
I was first introduced to Noah Braddock with book 3 (aka I still haven't read books 1 & 2). For the record, book 3 is a total doozy of a book. A main character dies. There's backstabbing, betrayal, murder, revenge, injustice, bloody justice, and surfing. Now, I want to make it clear that I REALLY liked this book BUT... it's not a mystery. It's an oddly poignant look at how one man deals with his crushing grief and guilt to find himself again after a terrible trag...more

Good news! Noah Braddock is back...in a big way.
With the fallout from Liquid Smoke (the 3rd installment in the Noah Bradoock mysteries), I wasn't sure what to expect with Drift Away. Where would Noah go? What would Noah do?
His life forever altered, Drift Away begins with Noah living in Florida, a quiet, mundane existence renting chairs and umbrellas on the beach. Yes, he's on the run. Not just from the consequences of his actions in San Diego; he's on the run from himself. While laying low on...more

This is the first Noah Braddock mystery I have read and I literally could not put it down. I started it after getting the rest of the family off to bed and basically devoured the book, finishing shortly after 2 a.m.
I love the writing, the way the hints of Noah's past life are doled out to us, his interactions with the people he meets, the way he deals with the bad guys, the way he deals with processing his own emotions and his past, the action, the description of Ft. Walton Beach and Destin, and...more

I thought this was one of the best books I have read in a long time. If you like suspense, this is a book for you. No mystery, you know all the characters and what they stand for right away. But still the tension and suspense goes from page 1 until the end. Read this 382 page book in one day. Could not put it down.
I have not read the previous books in this series, but that was OK. Shelby did a fine job of weaving in some history without spoiling it for me if I want to circle back and read the others. After working through a couple of literary classics, which weren't nearly as well-written as I would like, Drift Away was a nice, breezy change of pace.
