When one of your very good friends wholeheartedly recommends a book or series as one of her favorite contemporary romance series, you pay attention, yes? Which is why I didn't last long before picking up Laura Florand's THE CHOCOLATE THIEF after Chachic brought it to my attention a couple of weeks ago. I don't know if I would have discovered Florand otherwise, and I am just really happy that I did because this book is delicious. That cute cover doesn't hurt it either. In fact, I am currently wallowing in reading purgatory waiting for a paperback copy of the second Amour et Chocolat novel to show up in my mailbox, because even though I could download the ebook in the blink of an eye, I just really need the cute matching covers on my shelf. This surprises none of you, I am sure. Make no mistake, though. The minute it does arrive, I am diving right in. Because this delightful little treat reads like a chocolate-drenched Anna and the French Kiss for adults. Are you telling me you want to miss that little slice of heaven? No. I didn't think so.

Cade Corey has finally made it to Paris. Growing up the daughter of an American chocolate baron, she's dreamt her whole life of traveling to the city of lights and immersing herself in the world of chocolate masters. Now that she's here, she has a full-blown agenda. Track down Sylvain Marquis, make him an offer he can't refuse, and nail down a line of luxury chocolates to elevate Corey Chocolate's mainstream image. And Cade is absolutely sure she can do it. She's a savvy businesswoman who's spent her entire life surrounded by chocolate. She can have this deal in the bag by the end of the day and spend the rest of her unprecedented "time off" exploring Paris and soaking it all up. What she doesn't factor in is Sylvain Marquis' raging disdain for all things mundane. And Corey Chocolates are at the top of the list. The thought of putting his name on a Corey product fills him with actual physical pain. And so the battle of wills begins. Cade can't fathom giving up at this point. Not when she's come this far and invested so much of herself in this one dream. But Sylvain has traveled a long, difficult road himself. And he's not about to reduce all that hard work and mastery to a mere four-ounce bar of mediocre chocolate sold in Walmarts around the world. The divide between these two seems insurmountable. Until Cade has an idea, a dangerously game-changing idea.

THE CHOCOLATE THIEF surprised me on several levels. I went in expecting cute chick lit and wound up getting something entirely different. Which is not to say it isn't cute. It is! It's just quite a bit more than that, too. In the same way that the cover is a bit deceptively light, concealing rather deeper and darker waters within. Much of it has to do with Florand's writing, which continued to catch me unawares with its expressive nuances. Each time I thought I had its number and dared to let my mind wander, the writing would reel me in again with its quiet and perceptive weight. Cade's observations on Paris, the color, the sound, and the taste of it, charmed me and reminded me why I fell in love with it as well on my first visit. The characterization, particularly of Sylvain, carefully built upon this foundation. I loved that he was such an unexpected blend of uncertainty and bravado. I thought he might be too much to begin with, too rich for my blood in a way. But Florand wisely filled him out with a history, full of longing and failed attempts with the women in his life. Placed next to Cade's innate confidence their relationship made for pleasurable reading indeed. Here is one of my very favorite interactions early on:

She looked at him as if he had hit her. Or, worse, stripped her naked in a pretense of seduction and then smirked and turned her around to see a thousand ridiculing eyes.

She stared at him, something rising in her with a powerful force. His pulse quickened as he prepared for anything, anything--

She turned abruptly and strode toward the entryway. Without a word. Without letting him find out what that powerful force rising in her was.

He found himself following, hoping she would say a word. He was kicking himself already. He hadn't really wanted her to leave.

He just . . . thought it would be in his own best interest to make sure she did.

"I believe you still have our coat, mademoiselle," he mentioned as she reached for the doorknob, trying to pry that word he wanted out of her.

Her flush deepened furhter, her jaw as tense as it was possible for her to hold it. Her hands trembled so much on the buttons, she couldn't get them undone.

"Tenez," he said, troubled, his own hands lifting. He was an idiot. There was more than one way to be an idiot, and he had just proven it. He had just cut off his own nose to spite his face. "May I help?"

"Don't. You. Touch. Me." So much anger vibrated through her voice that he dropped his hands, that fourteen-year-old teenager waking in him, the kind girls didn't want to be touched by.

So he stood there as she struggled with button after button, making her slow, miserable way down the coat, everyone watching them, her cheeks deeply red now. He wondered why she didn't just destroy it--rip it off, pop the buttons, drop it on the floor, and maybe drop a few bills on it to cover the damage as she stalked out. It seemed like something an American billionaire would do.

At last she got it off, to reveal the most ridiculous enormous sweatshirt. He started to smile despite himself. "What are you wearing? Did you come to my workshop in your pajamas?" Americans. All the money in the world and not a gram of taste.

She gave him a look like a slap, thrust the coat at him, and strode out.

Passages like this are exactly why I loved THE CHOCOLATE THIEF, for the effortless blend of light and dark with which Laura Florand crafted it. The protagonists are passionate about everything they do and love. And what they do and love is chocolate. This appreciation shines through in every heady, lingering description. This is a romance, to be sure. If you like yours dipped in the finest chocolate money can buy, then I suggest you seek it out immediately.(less)

Libro appena finito.
L'ho trovato, intenso e delizioso. Ho dovuto nascondere il cioccolato a casa perché appena iniziavo a leggere mi veniva una voglia matta di mangiarlo!!!
Ambientazione e personaggi davvero suggestivi e indimenticabili. Il libro gioca appunto sulle diversità dei due paesi e sia Cade che Sylvane sono ben costruiti. Entrambi sono forti e decisi per quanto riguarda il lavoro, ma quando passiamo alla sfera sentimentale ė tutta un'altra cosa..insicuri e pieni di paure e timori.

What she doesn’t expect is for Sylvain to be 100% against her proposal. He actually gets angry she would ask such a thing of his precious chocolate. His hand-crafted chocolate wonders sell for hundreds of dollars. He puts his entire life into his chocolate, and would never sell out his name for some measly US dollars.

This frustrates Cade to no end, demanding he show her chocolate bars some respect. She starts to get consumed with his chocolate making process, breaking into his kitchens in the middle of the night to see what type of ingredients and types of tools he uses. Sylvain knows very well she is breaking in, and is amused by the whole thing. He finds her very attractive, and he wants to understand what her motives are. A food blog catches onto her midnight thievery, naming her ‘The Chocolate Thief.’

First let me say that I love the setting of this story – in Paris with chocolate being made and consumed on every page. I think the author captures the intimate process Sylvain goes through to make his chocolate quite well.

“This is one of my favorite moments,” Sylvain murmured to her, his voice a brush of sound, too low to interfere with Pascal’s lesson, too low for anyone but her. “The chocolate is untouched, virgin.” Chocolat, he said. Not that clumsy, cute English work chok-lat but a caress, a mystery, sho-co-la. “I choose it. It is beautiful as it is, perfect; anyone could eat it forever. Yet I bring something else to it, blend it with another flavor that makes people encounter it in a new way, a richer way.”
His voice burred over her skin. All the fine hairs on her arms rose to that voice and to the words that seemed to talk about more than chocolate. Made her want to be his chocolate.
At the beginning of the story, Sylvan is attracted to Cade which makes him blush. I found that a very likable character trait. It is also hinted at that he has had problems in the past for falling for women quite quick, only to get his heart broken on more than one occasion. For as much as Cade infuriates him with her business offer, he is still attracted to her. I wish his shy blushes would have played out more. Before you know it, he becomes this alpha, predatory male who claims his woman (in the chocolate shop. That was fun.). We don’t really see his bashful side nor do we learn the full history of why his heart was broken so many times. I kind of wish things with him were explored more. There are times where he acts very unsure of himself:

She lusted after everything he produced and owned so intensely and sinfully. Surely she must lust after him.
Never in his life had he felt so positive of that. And yet, driven by some old, stupid weakness of his, he had still held back far too long, just in case she wanted to escape.
He is set-up to lack confidence in his personal life (his confidence in his professional life is off the charts) and yet, I feel like we don’t really dive into this matter in detail.

Cade is an okay heroine. She is very determined and stubborn and refused to give up her fight to win Sylvain’s business. I think breaking in and making a mess of his workspace is unprofessional, but after the first few times, it becomes more of a game, so it didn’t bother me so much. Her father calls a lot on the phone demanding things from her which got old but I love her grandfather who shares her excitement of being in Paris.

Towards the end we meet Sylvain’s family and I enjoyed their interactions and it made me feel like we got to know Sylvan a little better. The romance scenes in this one are on the light side. We get one or two, but they are not super in-depth. I wish more time had been spent there (with dirty details!) because Sylvain is a very, sexy chocolatier indeed.

Bellissimo libro... Sylvain ha l'anima di un artista che é riuscito a creare cioccolatini unici e quindi ad affermarsi in un mondo difficile dove molte cose sono già state create e lei invece é un ricca miliardaria con un sogno ma anche con una certa arroganza tipica di chi ha molti soldi e che crede che tutto ha un prezzo..... mi é piaciuto molto leggere anche il punto di vista del personaggio maschile che é abituato a sedurre ma non ad essere sedotto....

Incantata dalle parole e dai sensi ho assaporato di questo libro ogni singola pagina. La sensazione di gustare il cioccolato ogni volta menzionato è stata un'esperienza a dir poco eccitante. How’s that for an intro? I love it!

Esatto, l'ho finito in un pomeriggio. Iniziato alle 14, finito alle 19. Da moltissimo tempo non mi capitava di godermi un libro con tranquillità e di riuscire a concentrarmi nella lettura così tanto in modo da assorbirlo fino all'ultima riga. Mi è mancata questa sensazione di vuoto che si crea quando ti immergi nella lettura.
E poi bisogna dirlo che un romanzo, per avere questo effetto, deve avere delle caratteristiche ben precise: prima di tutto non può essere un mattone, perché la lettura deve scorrere veloce - anzi, velocissima; secondo la storia deve essere briosa, divertente ma emozionante; terzo i personaggi devono stabilire un contatto con il lettore alla prima pagina, altrimenti si rischia di perdere interesse.
Ladra di cioccolato ha soddisfatto ampiamente tutti e tre questi elementi: non solo la storia è veloce da leggere, semplice e coinvolgente, ma i personaggi sono così particolari e reali allo stesso tempo che ti risucchiano nella storia e nei loro sentimenti. Ovviamente c'è anche l'elemento fiction, quello che nella vita reale non potrebbe mai avere lo stesso successo: la protagonista si lascia andare a attività illecite che normalmente l'avrebbero portata alla prigione, ma è un romanzo e ci piace così, un po' credibile e un po' no.
Qual'è il punto di forza della storia? Il rapporto tra Cade e Sylvain, non c'è dubbio. Cade, la protagonista, è una donna in carriera che gestisce l'aspetto finanziario della ditta di famiglia: multimilionaria, sa gestire capitali enormi eppure sotto sotto è una donna normalissima, con le sue mille insicurezze. Sylvain è un grande artista del cioccolato, uno dei migliori, eppure nasconde la sua timidezza con un atteggiamento da padrone del mondo, arrogante e autorevole. Quando si incontrano Cade rimane folgorata, perché diciamocelo, Sylvain è sexy da morire, nella sua reazione lei è come tutte noi: una ragazza normale che di fronte ad un uomo da cui si sente attratta non capisce più niente. Sylvain si lascia intrigare perché Cade ha un modo di fare particolare: si prende le batoste con una grazia anormale, incassa le delusioni ma si rialza come una molla. Cade non cede mai e questo suscita in Sylvain una curiosità particolare: Cade è interessata a lui oppure al suo cioccolato? La debolezza più grande del nostro cioccolataio di classe sono le donne: più lo strapazzano, più ne rimane affascinato. Con Cade succede proprio questo: è un tira e molla da entrambe le parti, un continuo scornarsi per nascondere i loro veri sentimenti.
I dialoghi sono ritmati, ben giocati nei contenuti e le scintille che sprizzano incendiano le pagine. La scena delle scale è pazzesca: di una sensualità estrema, spicca così tanto nel libro perché la componente sessuale è nettamente in secondo piano, ma quella scena...mamma santa, quella scena ha una potenza che ti porta all'autocombustione. Sylvain è un eroe ben fatto, sexy con quel pizzico di insicurezza che lo trasforma nei momenti giusti. Cade, invece, è perfettamente imperfetta: normale fuori e dentro. Le sue insicurezze, i suoi pensieri sono quelli che tutte noi hanno avuto almeno una volta nella vita. Due personaggi perfetti per questa storia, niente stona e nemmeno una delle loro parole frena la lettura.
E' un ottimo romanzo per passare un pomeriggio di relax, fa sorridere e commuovere, stuzzica e - porca miseria - ti fa venire una voglia matta di dolci. Mi avevano detto di leggerlo solo se avevo a portata di mano del cioccolato, ho seguito il consiglio e lo ribadisco: armatevi di cioccolato, quello buono, e vi godrete ancora di più la lettura!(less)

I am happy reading French as long as the translation is placed immediately after in parentheses. But that did not happen. Every time I saw a French word, my first thought was will it be translated? A few of them were translated a sentence or two later, but 95% were not. It kept taking me out of the story. The French words occurred about every second or third page. I took a college French class and forgot most of it, but I had a little knowledge, and I did not know these words.

If you are a student taking French, this might be fun, because you can practice and look up what you don’t know.

As to the story. This was a fun idea. I liked the sensuality of creating and eating chocolate. I liked the sensuality between Sylvain and Cade. I liked the story of their relationship and her breaking into his chocolate shop at night. Aside from my problem with the French words, a few times I felt the story dragging. I was curious enough to keep reading, but I wanted the book to be over.

Hygiene alert! When Cade broke into Sylvain’s shop, she ran her hand through sacks of pistachios and almonds, eating some and letting others “slide over her palm back into the crate.” My first thought was I hoped she washed her hands. She had lemon and vanilla on her finger and who knows what else. She touched things that customers will be eating. Sylvain should have thrown out ingredients that may have been touched by a thief. That was not addressed.

There were three sex scenes, one just a couple sentences. They were ok, not the hottest. Eating and describing chocolate were more passionate and sensual than the sex scenes.

Not one to give up easily, Cade resolves to put the arrogant, but oh so handsome man out of her mind, convinced that her family's fortunes and the promise to make insane amounts of money will sway one of the chocolatiers of Paris to join in her business venture. Of course, forgetting Sylvain Marquis would be a lot easier if the flat she had rented didn't overlook his shop, and she didn't keep running into him in shops and restaurants in the area. Her father thinks she is foolish to be wasting time in Paris in the first place, her grandfather encourages her to conduct industrial espionage and steal Sylvain's secrets. So when the opportunity arises to do just that, Cade sneaks into Sylvain's labratoire to see what she can find. Her snooping doesn't go undetected, however, and soon the Internet food blogs are abuzz with rumours of a chocolate thief stealing the delectable Marquis chocolates in the dead of night.

I discovered this book thanks to the Dabwaha tournament, an annual March Madness style competition, run by Smart Bitches, Trashy Books and Dear Author. As the book was also fortuitously on sale on Amazon the other week, I jumped at the chance to try it (not just because reading about hot Frenchmen who can do wonders with chocolate is much more fun than doing correction work), and I'm very glad I did. It was a very quick read, and I'm sure that if I'd spent days over it, I could have found more flaws. But I didn't, and I don't want to pick holes in it.

Sylvain Marquis is a wonderful hero, at once both arrogant and self-assured about his professional expertise, yet surprisingly insecure and doubtful about himself and his ability to impress women. He knows he's the best at what he does in terms of chocolate, and he knows he can win practically any woman over with the promise of his sinfully delicious gourmet treats, but never having had any success holding on to women long-term, and having been a gangly teenager who kept getting friend-zoned, he's still terrified that Cade will leave him, like all the other beautiful women have.

Cade has never met anyone who isn't impressed with her family's money and influence, and is baffled when she comes to Paris and everyone seems to find her money vulgar and offensive. Even offering exorbitant sums of money won't get her a carton of milk at a café, and the Corey family name is certainly not something any chocolatier worth his salt in France will want to be associated with. Everyone assumes she's had an easy life because of her money, when in fact, her stay in Paris is the first time in years she's had any time to herself. She's used to people constantly asking for help to fund things, and aware that most men can't see past her vast fortune to see the woman she really is. She's hard working, diligent and very loyal to her family and all the people who depend on her in the business, but in Sylvain's labratoire she experiences a magical world that she desperately wants to be a part of. That the owner of that world attracts her and infuriates her to no end, makes her livid, but she also finds it refreshing that he seems drawn to her despite her money, not because of it.

Laura Florand clearly loves Paris, and chocolate, and chocolate making makes for a surprisingly sexy setting for a romance. It's probably not surprising that a gorgeous man who creates amazing chocolates makes for an attractive romantic hero, but it's his insecurities, and the fact that he's not actually very good with women that makes Sylvain so likable. He keeps screwing up and saying and doing the wrong things, and then he's not afraid to admit his mistakes and apologise, trying to make amends. While he's appalled by her attempts to buy his name for her company, Sylvain decides he wants to seduce Cade fairly early on, and he works very systematically and cleverly to do so. It takes a strong and stubborn woman to withstand his attentions for as long as Cade did.

There is apparently already another book in the series, which various review assure me is even more enjoyable than this one. So I will definitely be checking out more of Florand's books. (less)

I picked this book up because I love France and chocolate. I didn't realize it was a romance, which I don't really read. But I do enjoy a good chick lit book. I think this one fit more into the Chick Lit category than romance. It wasn't simply about the main character, Cade Corey, finding the right man. It wasn't formulaic like a lot of romances are.

The first four to five chapters made me think this book was going to be an utter waste of space, but both characters got significantly less annoying once they started sleeping together. There were still a lot of moments where I wanted to chuck it at a wall for being sexist though.

WOW, WOW, WOW.

Laura’s ability to write characters that you sometimes love and you sometimes hate is out of this world! Sylvain and Cade often made me so mad when they tried to hide or deny their feelings for one another. This book keeps you guessing what will happen next!!

Cade Corey was my favorite character just because of all her spark and spunk. She came to Paris on a mission and she was determined not to return home until her mission was complete. Her love and passion for chocolate and Paris was so believable and as the reader I was cheering for her the whole time. She absolutely loved Paris and some of the best descriptions of the city came out through Cade’s thoughts and remarks to herself. She was a no back down type of character (if that makes sense)! She took nothing from no one and especially not Sylvain Marquis!! Here is a direct quote from Cade’s thoughts on Paris, “Outside, Paris put on darkness the way her women dressed for excitement-a black dress sliding over skin, something glittering in its threads. Paris pulled black net stockings over her elegant lines, added high-heeled black boots to click against pavement. Buildings lit strings of jewels-an earring here, a bracelet there, and a shimmer of something over the skin, a dusting of glitter” from page 89 of the ARC copy. Florand provides such eloquent descriptions all the way up until the last page!

Ultimately the best part of this book was the chocolate!! You will seriously crave chocolate and you will want to go out and buy some. The way that Sylvain talks about chocolate and his passion for making it helps to make this story what it is. Sylvain often used his chocolate to lure his women in; now that tells you how skilled he is with chocolate.

Such a fun, light and enchanting read about a beautiful city and a richly made chocolate with a handsome chocolatier!!

Reading The Chocolate Thief by Laura Florand was a beautiful tour for my eyes and taste buds. Even if you don’t like chocolate, know nothing about the French language, or ever dream of handsome Frenchmen, you will fall in love with it all by the time you finish this story. I love how she is so detail-oriented with her descriptions of the makings of chocolate (from the descriptions of the tools used, the French words sprinkled throughout, to the descriptions of the types of chocolate). I love how she uses chocolate as a medium for a sensual way for the two main characters to meet. The storyline takes you into the world and behind the scenes of exquisitely made chocolates with a very handsome and Parisian tour guide. You want to find a way to fly to Paris to venture down the city streets, and walk into all the cafes and shops that lead to all that is good and pure (chocolate, that is).

On one end of the equation is Sylvain Marquis—a dedicated, detail-oriented Parisian chocolate artist who not only has a large distaste for American business people but also is very protective of his masterpieces and “art”. On the other end of the equation, business woman and part-owner of an American family chocolate dynasty is Cade Corey who is set to immerse herself in to the Parisian lifestyle and chocolate world if that what it takes to get what she has set out for; which of course is Sylvain’s signature on a contract. You become enrobed in the flavors and textures of their relationship that start out with no trust and very rocky but moves into becoming something so much more as each sees past their own stereotyping of being French or American.

I wanted to read this book while sitting at French café eating Sylvain’s chocolates. Sadly, I could not. Laura Florand takes the reader to the most interesting places in a world that most people don’t really know a lot about. But she does it in a way that makes you hunger for more information while loving the characters and all their eccentricities. My hunger for more, more, more, kept my interest piqued and washed over me with a beautiful sensual combination of descriptions of Sylvain and Cady’s growing, burgeoning relationship and the beauty and art of all things chocolate.(less)

I LOVED THIS BOOK from start to finish. Ho iniziato a leggere questo romanzo appena mi è arrivato, tramite corriere, dalla Leggereditore.
Quando si parla di storie d'amore e di cioccolato con una città magica come Parigi come sfondo non so proprio come resistere; meno di due giorni di lettura ed eccomi qui a recensirvi il volume dando sfogo alle mie opinioni in anteprima sperando di ispirarvi nell'acquisto (oppure no) di questo volume.

Cade Corey è la figlia di uno dei maggiori produttori di tavolette di cioccolato in America ma la sua aspirazione è quella di avviare una linea di cioccolato gourmet firmata da uno dei migliori chocolatier parigini: Sylvain Marquis.
Ed è proprio per questo motivo che la ragazza si trova nella capitale francese armata di determinazione e un'offerta per un contratto del valore di migliaia di dollari senza il minimo dubbio che qualcuno possa rifiutare la sua offerta.
Invece è proprio quello che Sylvain Marquis fa, cacciandola senza garbo dal suo atelier.
Cade, però, non è una donna che si arrende facilmente e cerca collaborazioni con altri chocolatier illustri di Parigi ricevendo però solo risposte negative alla sua proposta.

Cade ha una vera e propria passione per il cioccolato rimanendo inebriata dagli aromi e dalla sensazione del cioccolato che le si scioglie sul palato liberando tutta la morbidezza dell'interno e appena assaggia un cioccolatino di Sylvain, per il quale già prova una forte attrazione fisica, decide di voler a tutti i costi scoprire il segreto di quell'uomo così arrogante e pieno di sé ma al contempo sexy e affascinante. Dal suo appartamento posto di fronte alla cioccolatiera Cade riesce a scoprire il codice di accesso del negozio e decisa a rubare le ricette di quell'uomo che al tempo stesso la irrita e la seduce una notte si introduce nell'atelier.
Sopraffatta dalla presenza invisibile di Sylvain e dall'odore del cioccolato e degli aromi la donna non trovando le ricette si abbandona ai sensi e al gusto assaggiando e rubando diverse scatole di cioccolatini.

La mattina dopo il chocolatier non riesce a capire il motivo dell'intrusione anche se una fantasia inizia a farsi largo nella sua mente...
Per uno sfortunato caso quella mattina al negozio era presente anche un blogger gastronomico che eccitato dalla notizia pubblica un post dedicato alla ladra di cioccolato. La novità fa il giro dei blog francesi raggiungendo quelli inglesi e americani portando il mondo della rete a domandarsi che sia quella donna che ama il cioccolato a tal punto da commettere una violazione di domicilio per impossessarsene.

Cade non si da per vinta e la notte successiva ritorna nel negozio e la mattina dopo Sylvain non ha più dubbi sull'identità della ladra e anche se non sa a che gioco sta giocando la donna americana la sua attrazione è troppo forte e decide di aspettare il ritorno della ladra...

Ladra di cioccolato è un libro che fa venire l'acquolina in bocca l'autrice riesce a farci assaporare il cioccolato e i suoi aromi solo con le parole; la storia è scritta molto bene e lo stile della Florand è molto scorrevole e facile da leggere nonostante ci siano diverse espressioni in lingua francese ed è molto coinvolgente grazie anche ai continui cambi di punti di vista tra Cade e Sylvain che ci danno la possibilità di cogliere a pieno la storia apprezzando e costatando i vari pregi e difetti sia dell'uno che dell'altro.
La relazione tra i due è dapprima molto burrascosa e quasi non ci accorgiamo del cambiamento interiore e dei sentimenti dei due e questa, per me, è l'unica pecca del romanzo: in alcuni punti sembra che tutto vada bene e il momento dopo vecchi giudizi tornano a farsi vivi nella mente di uno dei due, risolvendosi però con troppa rapidità tenendo conto che l'intera storia si svolge nell'arco di due mesi lasciandoci nel finale a bocca aperta e con l'impressione che tutto sia successo un po' troppo i fretta!

Sognatrici e sognatori in vena di romanticherie: armatevi di una buona scatola di cioccolatini prima di iniziare a leggere questo romanzo (non fate come ho fatto io che ora smanio per avere un cioccolatino!) e poi non vi resta che calarvi nell'atmosfera invernale di Parigi pronti a lasciarvi incantare da un'affascinante chocolatier che non si risparmierà a colpi di cioccolato pur di conquistarvi!(less)

la lettura di questo libro procura dipendenza e astinenza una volta finito.
posso affermare di essere ingrassato 10 chili mentre mi perdevo tra sacchi di baccelli di vaniglia/ cacao e pistacchi.
fondente, al latte, alle mandorle, di tutti i gusti e soprattutto per palati finissimi, poichè un chilo di questi magnifici esemplari costano un occhio della fronte.

Come si evince dal titolo e dalla copertina il vero protagonista del libro non è né Sylvain (quanto mi piace questo nome *_*) nè Cade e neppure Parigi (sebbene il fascino della città sia ben presente) ma il cioccolato. Cade è una donna impulsiva ed emotiva (o almeno lo è da quando è a Parigi XD) e durante la storia ce lo dimostra spesso, pagando una cifra assurda ad una donna solo per prendere il suo posto nel seminario di Sylvain(ammetto che questa suo atteggiamento del "posso comprare tutto e tutti col denaro" mi ha infastidito non poco =( ) e infiltrandosi per varie notti consecutive nel laboratorio della cioccolateria ufficialmente per cercare le ricette ma in verità per ingozzarsi di cioccolatini (da quanti ne mangia nella storia dovrebbe pesare sui 100 Kg XD) e sperimentare nuove ricette facendosi poi ovviamente beccare dai giornalisti di mezzo mondo O.o Sylvain e Cade hanno in comune una grande attrazione fisica e una passione ancora più accesa per il cioccolato, e quando l'autrice prova a uscire da questi due binari per mostrarci qualche altro lato di questa storia d'amore lo fa con poca convinzione e infatti nonostante il romanticismo non manchi la loro storia non mi ha convinto XD Ammetto che nel cioccolato c'è una certa sensualità e sicuramente utilizzarla per un romanzo è stata una bella idea (e per me anche originale) ma come si dice il troppo stroppia e non riesco a immedesimarmi in due personaggi che poco ci manca abbiano un rapporto completo attraverso un cioccolatino XD Comunque il romanzo è carino e scorrevole e se amate alla follia(ma proprio alla follia!) il cioccolato e tutto il suo profumoso mondo non posso che consigliarvelo XD(less)

Cade Corey is the heir to a chocolate empire, Corey Bars, in the US. A company started by her grandfather, whose only job in the company now is working in his own little corner coming up with off the wall chocolate concoctions (spinach and chocolate, anyone?), now run by her father. Cade sets off for Paris in hopes to sign the name of the best chocolatier for a new line of gourmet chocolates she’s hoping to develop.

What could be better than the city of lights, chocolate, and a very attractive Frenchman who happens to be the best chocolatier in Paris, Sylvain Marquis? Sylvain turning her down, that’s what.

But does Cade let that stop her? Oh no. No, she decides to break into his shop. Funny thing though, it’s not secrets to his recipes she goes looking for, instead, Cade spends night after night making chocolate.

When a food blogger runs the story of “The Chocolate Thief” people start to line up and down for Sylvain’s treats- as if he needed to be reminded that he’s the best. Of course, it’s mentioned that Cade might be the intruder, only she and Sylvain know the truth. How does he know? Well, he stays to catch his thief; right into his awaiting arms. Thus begins a very up and down, back and forth relationship between Cade and Sylvain, that is cute and endearing.

I would compare Sylvain to the (entire bag of) Lindor chocolates that I ate. The exterior is a hard chocolate shell, but inside? Inside is a rich, creamy center that melts on your tongue.

Throughout the book- the breaking and entering; the chocolate mogal out to conquer Europe; the cocky chocolatier looking to keep his name to himself- two people start to love, allowing them to want something, or someone, more than they want chocolate. And in the end, maybe Cade will get what she wants after all.

As for what I want? The pounds I gained eating chocolate while reading this book, back and for her grandfather to have his own “heist” books. Seriously, the man stole every scene he was in.

I found this book via the SBTB site and their notification of it being on sale.

I think I'm safe to say that only in France (or possibly more specifically Paris) would a guy think it was sexy that a woman had broken into his shop and stolen his goods (chocolates). There was no outrage, it was a sexy invitation rather than an invasion.

But what was really interesting to me, and what I really have to comment on, is the language thing - obviously! Because I deal with multiple languages on a daily basis, and because I know French fairly well, I super enjoyed that some of the dialogue was kept in French. I also like that the French dialogue was almost always translated into English in the description to make it accessible, and it was done in a way that didn't pull me out of the story, even though I understood what was said the first time around.
Still, up until the end, I wasn't really sure if having part of the dialogue in French worked for me, because they were technically speaking French pretty much all the time, and then having most of the dialogue written in English when they were speaking French, but then some French words thrown in, was weird, but I think specifically in the last few pages, using French was great for effect (and really, who doesn't want to be told "je t'aime" by a handsome French dude???).
The only thing I sometimes had to suspend disbelief for, was Cade's fluency/vocabulary. Yes, she was said to have learned French 'off and on' for most of her life, but still... She often used flowery language in French and used words that I don't know after 11 years of learning French, but she couldn't remember how to say "forget it" in French or doesn't know how to say "fuck you"? I also can't believe that someone who immersed themselves into French culture for so long wouldn't know what the banlieue of Paris is. I can look past all of that, though, because you knew that the author actually spent a lot of time in Paris and either knows French really well or had help (I believe she's married to a French guy/lives or has lived there for a while?), because I didn't find any inaccuracies, and I really shouldn't be surprised at that or point it out as something positive, because that should be the standard, but compared to the other books I've read recently that were written by Americans and set in Europe, she did it so much better than everybody else.

So yeah, long story short: A really enjoyable read -- but don't start reading this if you're hungry ;) Don't say I didn't warn you. (less)

This book was a little bit like a train wreck for me. I wanted to look away but I couldn't because I wanted to see the extent of the damage and hoped it wouldn't be too bad. I'm guessing the use of French was intended to help put the reader in a Parisian frame of mind but as I don't speak French all it did was distract me.

And the writing perfectly matched the setting too. She was able to take an already romantic city and make the writing equally romantic and sensual. An example:

"It handn't hurt that the intensely physical apprenticeships in chocolaterie had taught him control and power and strength, or that he had filled into his height, but the real key had been his mastery of chocolate, and he knew it. The way to a woman's body was through what she delighted in putting into her mouth. When a woman let his chocolate melt on her tongue, he thought of it as her letting a little bit of him melt there."

Ah, I loved it. The writing was perfect. And the romance between Sylvain and Cade was a slow build up without having to revert to explicit sex scenes or over-dramatic declarations. I loved those two together.

I was a little unsure of Sylvain at first until I got to this passage, and then I was hooked:

"He had learned that if he wanted to find a treasure, he was going to have to hunt for it and be very, very careful as he did.

He hated it, though, being so careful. It was not his nature. He wanted to find that one person and just giver her all of him, his heart, his head, his body. He wanted the sound and scent of her in their apartment, he wanted to be cooking with her in the kitchen, he wanted babies eventually, waking them up every two hours and leaving toys for him to trip over.

He wanted the true prize."

Underneath his arrogance and defensive anger, Sylvain is a good guy. And Cade was a good fit with him. Her determination and backbone were admirable but I also liked how real she was too. Her insecurities and her desire to do what gives her joy and brings passion to her life while being conflicted over familial and business obligations and responsibilities were very relatable. She was definitely a strong character and could match him for each scathing look and cutting remark, yet she was still vulnerable. Both of them were actually. And that's why I liked them together so much because, underneath it all, they were both the same. It made the epilogue all that much more sweeter too.

And that's why I loved this book and stayed up way too late finishing it in one day. I'll definitely be reading The Chocolate Kiss very soon.(less)

Sono completamente, pazzamente, definitivamente innamorata di questo libro.
La Florand è riuscita a mescolare vari ingredienti alla perfezione: un uomo all'apparenza sicuro di sè, capace ancora di arrossire come un adolescente, che rimane ossessionato dalla donna che vuole comprarlo; una donna testarda, amante del rischio, ma insicura nei sentimenti; cioccolato fondente in tutte le salse, e, soprattutto, una sensualità meravigliosa, che attraversa tutto il romanzo.
