The British edition is "Walking to New Orleans." Pretty comprehensive, though it only covers up to 1974. But not as well organized as Jeff Hannusch's "I Hear You Knockin': The Sound of New Orleans Rhythm and Blues", and since the books cover similar ground, it's not really necessary to own both (I do, though.)
A little dry, but chock full of information and testimony from those who were there. Also, a great resource for putting together a very obscure but killer collection of New Orleans classics.
