As a historian who also loves gardens and gardening, I greatly enjoyed this compact book, whose full and proper title is "Paradise on Earth: The Gardens of Western Europe."

It's a densely illustrated, brief survey of the cultural meanings that gardens have had throughout history, its pages packed with interesting captions and colorful reproductions of gardens as they have been depicted in various records since the earliest human societies. I have no natural interest in this subject, but still found the book captivating. This surveys many (all?) approaches to making a garden in Europe through time, especially spectacular and unusual gardens. Many specific examples are described and illustrated.
