I want to become Susan Elizabeth Phillips when I grow up some more. She writes the sort of books I really, really wish I had written. Not because they're sheer genius, or the characters are phenomenal, or the plot's epic, or anything extraordinary like that, but simply because they comfort me. They actually matter and make a difference in my opinion of little things like love, happily ever afters, second chances, and the power of fate.

Cute premise. Widowed First Lady is coerced into sticking around in that capacity for the next unmarried president. After a while she just flips out, disguises herself, merges into a tour, and gains herself a few days of freedom to roam the country at will as a normal person. She goes to a garage sale and buys the ugliest ceramic frog she can find, loves truck stop greasy diners, and of course, she can drive a Winnebago (she's had experience driving tanks, US and foreign made).

Cornelia Case is the ‘First Lady’ and one of the most recognizable women in the world. However, she has just buried her husband. Grieving, needing to be alone, and wanting space and time to heal; she sets up a plan to escape the White House and all its obligations. Although she knows she will be caught, sooner or later, she plans to see the world as an ‘ordinary’ person. ‘Ordinary’ for someone who has lead a sheltered and pampered lifestyle can be quite amusing. On one of her first jaunts out, s...more

This book is one of SEP’s personal best. There’s no question that she is one of the most talented authors the romance genre currently boasts.

A fun, quick read. Even though is may be unrealistic with America's widowed First Lady escaping the White House unknown and living a 'normal' life for a week it was enjoyable. Sometimes we just need that little escape from reality and this book was fitting.

You must do the thing you think you cannot do.
- Eleanor Roosevelt
She wanted to shop in a grocery store without everyone staring at her, to walk down a small-town street eating an ice-cream cone and smiling, just because she felt like it, not because she had to. She wanted the freedom to speak her mind, to make mistakes. She wanted to see the world as it really was, not polished up for an official visit. Maybe then she would finally be able to figure out how to live the rest of her life.

This is the story of Nealy and Mat, who meet in this book, and adopt child Lucy (who grows up to be the runaway bride of "Call Me Irresistible," and whose runaway adventure is followed in "The Great Escape"). First Lady is essentially a "Roman Holiday" plot with the White House subbing for a palace. SEP is funny, we know this. But this was amazingly funny! There were so many moments that had me laughing out loud, I can't wait to forget this book just so I can reread it again. A baby named Butt (not really) and angry pre-teen, a first lady in disguise, and a man who's confused by his attraction to a pregnant lady, all loaded into a trailer made for a lot of silliness.

This American version of poor little princess is very good. Cornelia's father was Vice-President when she was a child, and she was raised to be the perfect political wife. She even marries the man who becomes President, only to discover he is gay. Then he is assassinated, and she is coerced into remaining First Lady because the VP is not married.

Another heartwarming story from Susan Elizabeth Phillips. It's odd, since I've not been reading these in any particular order, to know how people grow up from her later stories, and then to meet them again in a younger character. It makes me want to reread the newer story again, now that I 'know' them. This story was particularly satisfying. The heroine, Nealy, was strong and determined. Seeing things through her eyes was a true delight. Mat, the handsome (of course!) guy was somewhat clueless (...more

Heartwarming, happy, fullfilling. Those were my feelings as I finished this book.
This is a charming ,witty, funny, romantic story. So enjoyable, it kept me up past my desired bedtime. She is one of my favorite authors. Story brief: The President dies in office. His wife is asked to continue the job of first lady for the vice president who is single. She doesn't want this job and uses a disguise to escape the White House and travels as an ordinary person. I read this immediately after finishing the chicago stars series ( which I loved) and was a little disappointed.
The story line involving the first lady was unusual and the interaction between Neally, Lucy and button was nicely written.
Think roman holiday set in an American camper van with a difficult teenager, a vomiting baby and a surly romantic lead, hiding the fact that he is a journalist.

I just love a good SEP story. And I LOVE when Anna Fields narrates it. I'm still so sad she passed away. She was SO GOOD at narrating and really brought the characters to life.
What a fun story. I can only imagine that First Ladies and others in the public eye have wished to just disappear for a while. Nealy had good reason -- she'd been in the spotlight since she was a kid, and while her husband, the previous President, passed away, the single new President needed someone to fulfill the First L...more

I'm not convinced that it would be terribly difficult for someone part of the first family to run away for some peace. Although I am convinced that it would be terribly dangerous for that person because there is so many bad folks out in the world that will take advantage.

The first half of this book was 5 stars. The second half really pulled it down. I loved the way the heroine escaped the White House and went across country with the hero and the 2 girls. I loved the way she let herself be rude and snippy and normal and how she saw herself so clearly and enjoyed doing it. Great stuff. She just wanted to live a normal life so why at the end did she go back and run for senate and eventually the White House? Seemed a bit like a bait and switch. The author basically...more

I was looking at this book because I have two of SEP's books on my to read list. The other day I ran into Call Me Irresistible and was flipping through it. I was two chapters in and wanted to read more. Later I found an excerpt of First Lady and I read it found the whole book and absorbed.
I love well done books with kids and this one was awesome. Nealy came across as real and I liked Mat. Button and Lucy were sweet and tart (in that order). Good book. I'd read it again.

Nealy Case has just lost her husband, but not her role as First Lady - and she is suffocating under the burden of public life. So she "breaks out" ... and ends up with Mat Jorik and his two daughters, who are on a road trip to Iowa to meet the girls' grandmother.

In the words of my mother-in-law, Phillips is definitely one of my “guitly pleasures.” Her books are fantastic and have great stories and multi-faceted characters.
This book was a difficult book to put down once I got into it. I'm so glad Jess has turned me on to these books. They're always entertaining and it's easy to jump into the story right at the start. My only criticism would be that Phillips tends to always write about rich woman and an obstinate man. She does it very well, but it's refreshing when she finds a new type of character. In First Lady, the author created a pretty awesome voice in Lucy, a young teen who recently lost a mother whose efforts were more focused on drinking than parenting. Behind that a...more

Anna Fields, how much more can I confess my love of your narration?
A decent listen, but fairly typical as far as early Susan Elizabeth Phillips books go, but not her strongest work by a long shot.
I enjoyed all of this book but the end. The end was sappy, overdrawn and boring. However, the characters and the interaction of a teenager, a baby, a first lady on the lamb and a seemingly uncaring bachelor in a Winnebago was a great combination.
