Despite the repetitiveness in some parts - Roarke's library, the dialog between him and Eve - I still enjoyed this installment. Not as good as the previous, Vengeance ID, but still enjoyable because of Robb's ability to keep the pace tight and zipping along like those futuristic cars.

It's getting predictable but I expected this when I started the series a couple of months ago so I'm not complaining just yet. Still, I hope I haven't spoken too soon as there were some lines that seemed taken right...more

It's been a while since I've sat down and read an entire book in one sitting. But this seemed to be exactly what I was in the mood for. Which sounds gruesome and terrible given the subject matter. But I continue to enjoy the characters.

I feel like the balance between the characters was better in this one. I continue to love Mira, and Feeney and Peabody. McNabb grew on me in this one. I liked him in the last one, but I liked him better in this one. And Eve's relationship with Sommerset was well d...more

Shelves: thriller

HOLIDAY IN DEATH (Pub. 1998) is the 7th novel of the In Death series. I have read all of the books in this series and this is one of my favorites. I had somehow missed reading this one along the way, and picked it up because it's the holidays. I'm sure glad I did - it was a great read for a lot of reasons.

The author does a fantastic job of keeping the tension and suspense up, along with a fast pace. Robb also manages to give us strong characterization while she spins a tale of mystery and death...more

It’s 2058 in New York and it’s the Christmas season. But there’s no time for Lieutenant Eve Dallas to take a break. There is a new killer on the loose and this one is focusing on lonely hearts. All his victims are clients of a dating service. And, to really get into the holiday spirit, he shows up on his victims’ doorsteps dressed as old St. Nick himself. But the presents he leaves are anything, but merry. He leaves jewelry with his victims that go with the 12 days of Christmas and Eve and her team needs to work fast to keep him from getting his intended number of victims.

McNab, who was introduced in the last installment of the series, joins the team on the case, much to Peabody’s dismay. Both McNab and Peabody go undercover signing up with the dating service. And when Santa corners Peabody at her apartment it sends the rest of the team in a frantic race against time to stop this crazed killer.

It was a little strange reading a book about Christmas when it’s 90 degrees outside, but I couldn’t put off the series for a couple of months to read the book in its correct season, so I revisited the holiday now. And being a person who doesn’t really like Christmas carols or crowded Christmas shopping, I can really appreciate Eve’s bah humbug view of things in this book.

“Eve engaged her On Duty sign and stepped out of the car. Immediately her ears were assaulted with a blast of music. Christmas carols pumped, full blast, into the air. She decided that people ran inside, ready to buy anything, just to escape the noise.”

With each of the victims in this book being bound, raped, and murdered, it brought Eve’s past screeching to the forefront of her mind and wrenched Roarke’s heart watching her in so much pain. But he was as loving and supportive of her as he always is and helps where he can.

I really wasn’t much of a McNab fan and was kind of hoping that he’d go away now that Feeney is back from vacation. But I see the purpose of keeping him around now. There is definitely something brewing in the future for him and Peabody. I just hope it doesn’t cost us her quirky lines about men!

“Okay, but if you ever do hire twelve LCs to fuck you blind, I want details.”

Peabody sniffed, and managed a watery grin, “It’s just a little fantasy of mine. I don’t actually make enough to afford twelve at once. But I did have another little fantasy come true tonight. Roarke saw me naked.”

I found most of the things in this book to be pretty predictable…like Peabody being enlisted in the dating service and the killer coming after her at the end of the book. But this novel wasn’t boring by any means and I enjoyed watching it all unfold. I was wrong about who the killer was so that’s something I couldn’t predict. There were also the usual steamy sex scenes between Eve and Roarke that were pretty hot. Including a very romantic one in their holoroom, which by far was my favorite.

This is a good book and any lover of mystery and whodunit type books will be right at home with it. The futuristic aspects are very minuscule in this book so for those of you that are scared by it you shouldn’t fear. Just snuggle up with this book by a nice fire and enjoy!

Auf ihrem nackten Körper eine Tätowierung "Meine große Liebe".

Nach Durchsicht der Überwachungsbänder wird klar: Der Täter verkleidet sich als Weihnachtsmann und wird so freiwillig eingelassen. Bei den Ermittlungen fällt auf, dass das Opfer Kundin einer Partnervermittlung war. Direkt am nächsten Tag gibt es ein weiteres Opfer: Eine junge Frau, nackt vergewaltigt, geschminkt und mit einer Weihnachtsgirlande geschmückt, auf ihrem Körper ebenfalls die Tätowierung "Meine große Liebe" und dank der Überwachungskamera wird wieder ein als Weihnachtsmann verkleideter Mann als Täter identifiziert. Auch dieses Opfer war Kundin der gleichen Partnervermittlung und wie es scheint, haben Dallas, Peabody, Feeney und McNab es mit einem Serientäter zu tun, der seine Opfer über die Partnervermittlung auswählt. Eve ermittelt im vorweihnachtlichen New York und schnell gerät das Geschwisterpaar unter Verdacht, das die Agentur leitet. Doch ist die Lösung wirklich so einfach?

Spannend bis zur letzten Seite ist dieser 7. Fall von Eve Dallas und gewohnt unterhaltsam mischt sich ihr Privatleben mit ihren polizeilichen Ermittlungen. Durch die Vergewaltigung der Opfer trifft dieser Fall Eve auch persönlich und sie ermittelt bis zum sprichwörtlichen Umfallen. Wäre da nicht Roarke der gewohnt besorgt zur Stelle ist und mehrfach verhindert, dass seine Eve vor Erschöpfung umkippt.

Aber es gibt auch wieder erheiternde Szenen. Während Eve und ihr Sidekick Officer Peabody ermitteln, liefern sie sich wieder spitze Wortgefechte. Da Eve keine Kindheit hatte, ist ihr Weihnachten suspekt und der Kaufrausch der Menschen treibt sie schier in den Wahnsinn. Als ihr im Gespräch mit Peabody klar wird, dass sie noch kein einziges Geschenk hat und das von ihr erwartet wird, rauft sie sich die Haare. Sehr lustig die Szene bei Bloomingdales, als sie einer Spur nachgehen und Peabody immer wieder sehnsüchtige Blicke auf diverse Sachen wirft und Eve ihr schroff klar macht: "Wir sind nicht zum Einkaufen hier! Wenn sie nicht in 15 Minuten zurück sind, versetze ich sie in den Streifendienst." Und dann selbst nebenbei zwei Geschenke kauft. Habe ich gelacht bei diesen Dialogen!

Sehr gut gefallen hat mir, dass trotz Feeneys Rückkehr aus dem Urlaub jetzt auch verstärkt Ian McNab zum Team gehört, der heimlich Eves Schokoriegel aus ihrem Schreibtisch klaut und mit seinen frechen Bemerkungen Peabody zur Weißglut treibt. Die beiden sind einfach dazu ausersehen, sich irgendwann in die Arme zu sinken. Herrlich!

Fazit: Ein spannender und unterhaltsamer weihnachtlicher 7. Fall für Eve Dallas und meine Lust auf weitere Bücher dieser Reihe ist ungebrochen. Volle Punktzahl für gute und spannende Unterhaltung!(less)

Let me just get this out of the way. I find Eve Dallas to be one of the most loathsome female characters in any successful series going today. She is verbally and emotionally abusive to anyone who cares about her, including her hot husband. It's Christmas and Eve Dallas is cranky. She doesn't need this.

Let me just get this out of the way. I find Eve Dallas to be one of the most loathsome female characters in any successful series going today. She is verbally and emotionally abusive to anyone who cares about her, including her hot husband. If I worked for her I'd request a transfer. If she was my friend I'd screen her calls.

At one point she says something completely horrible, insulting and humiliating to Peabody -- her friend and subordinate. Peabody reads her the riot act: "You can say what you want on the clock but not when we're on personal time" kind of thing. Well, apparently Eve was saying it from a personal standpoint and not as Peabody's boss. So, Eve gets her feelings hurt over Peabody's rant. And, apparently ... according to the author ... we're supposed to take Eve's side in this. Peabody's in the wrong. WTH!!? Infuriating. If professional what she said should have gotten her written up as harassment. If personal what she said should have permanently lost her a friend.

But not in the world of In Death where Eve Dallas can abuse and disrespect every single person with whom she comes in contact and all they do is freakin' admire her.

I'm not sure why this series is so popular, frankly. I think it's Roarke. He's definitely a great hero, but in this installment he's reduced to a therapeutic sex toy. Which would be fine if he wasn't so much more interesting than the heroine.

I was bothered by the previous book because it was so Eve-centric when the mystery should have had the book focused much more on Roarke. And in this one he's pushed even further into the background. I'm sorry, but Eve Dallas is simply not a likable enough heroine to sustain interest in this series. Why would I buy a book just to see the protagonist beat up on the people who, for some unknown reason, care about her?

The mystery was okay, but therein lay another wall banger. We have everyone talking about what a great cop Eve is but her impulsive nastiness led her down the wrong path multiple times. She blames herself for missing clues but then everyone else assures her it's not at all her fault. It IS her fault she missed clues because she was busy ruining everyone else's Christmas with her bitchy attacks on everything from work to play to tradition to personal choice. She's a nightmare.

And after all that ... spoiler warning ... (view spoiler) The author was sweeping that huge event under the rug in favor of some weak epiphany for Eve. It was insulting and just cemented my feeling that Eve is not at all a good cop and probably needs to find another line of work. And she's not a good friend, either.

Do they get better? I really liked numbers 4 and 5 but then things crashed and burned for me with this series. Please tell me they do get better, otherwise I'll never understand how this series has gone to over thirty installments. (less)

Book Review: 2 Treasure Boxes

The story is interesting and well written. There is a good intermingling between solving the case and Eve's personal life. Robb gives a few suspects for us to look at but does not reveal the true murderer until the end of the book. If you are looking to solve a mystery along with Eve then you will be disappointed since you cannot solve this book on your own. This was a tough one. It has been the hardest case for me so far. Not only was there a serial killer on the loose, but he was sexually attacking his victims. This was rough on Eve. It brought all those memories from being a young girl and having a monster of a father (I can barely type that last word). This case really wore down on Eve and I think it also was rough on Roarke. still reading it and .. yes i think i like it. first book i am reading by this author. i like the setting.. futuristic but not OVER-sci-fi.. am not a sci-fi fan.. so there are some futuristic touches here and there but overall.. it is still kind of realistic. as to the story and characters.. eve dallas.. a toughy woman.. good cop.. and - in this book - puzzled by the feelings, i.e. love, she has for her husband.. . her husband.. rich, obviously good looking, sexy guy.. mh. peabody her assistant....more

I totally had the wrong guy pegged as the killer in this one, but I don't feel the killers motives were as well developed as in the other books in the series; I don't think the profiling was as in depth as has been the case previously.

Another great instalment in the In Death series. This time there's a killer on the loose with a thing for Christmas. Murder victim one is found with a partridge in a pear tree icon. Does that mean there are 11 more victims to go?

These books are so good. It amazes me how the quality never dips. The cast of characters steadily grew throughout the first three books, and now you just grow to love each character that much more with each book.

Roarke and Eve are in a good place, but Eve still struggle...more

Holiday in Death had a good criminal investigation going with sexual crimes commited by a man dressed as Santa Claus. The victims were all people who had signed up with Personally Yours, a love-match agency. The villain used the 12 days of Christmas as a theme for his crimes.

This story has the most sexual scenes between Roarke and Eve that I've seen in any of the books so far! Wow. I did begin skipping them after a while, I think because I'm not used to them in these books? But yeah... quite a...more

Holiday in Death is the seventh installment in J.D. Robb’s In Death series. While it wasn’t my favorite, it was still a great read!

There are a string of serial type murders happening around Christmastime and the only link between the deaths is the dating service, Personally Yours, that all the victims used. I liked this book. I don't believe it was as good as Vengence in Death, but I think Robb was clever with the murder mystery. This book obviously takes place during the Christmas season and we begin with Eve going back into work after the on-the-job injuries she sustained after Vengence in Death. Started reading this series of books in December last year and am completely hooked cannot get enough of them. These are set in the late 2050s onwards and are a good combination of crime with some romantic interest in the main characters Eve Dallas and Roarke, Peabody and McNabb with added interest from Feeney the man that saw Dallas as a young copper and moved her into homicide where he trained her and still acts as a father-figure/mentor. Another solid entry in the Eve Dallas series. One of the things I find intriguing about this series is how quickly the stories follow on each other and how well they incorporate incidents from the prior novels into the current one to keep that sense of continuity. In the last novel Eve took a bad injury to her shoulder at the end of the book, in the beginning, and throughout most of the book that shoulder is a sore spot (so to speak).

Although the premise is this mystery is outstanding, the victims were once again likeable people who didn't deserve to die, something I have trouble with, admittedly. Ms. Roberts really makes you see the grief and devastation left by loss, especially from unexpected death. It is heart-wrenching, one of her many talents, but hard to take nonetheless. So I decided to take on another of the In Death Series.

Good points:

I did like how the characters relationships continue to evolve. It had type of homey feeling to this book and made me look forward to the holiday seasons. This book made me angry, made me cry and I felt the love between the characters.

Bad Points:

MY OPINION

This books in the series really puts into perspective that anyone could be a killer in disguise. Christmas time is in the air, tourists and residents of New York alike are all going crazy with holiday fever as they all fight to find the perfect gifts for family, lovers, and friends. Eve Dallas is new to this whole thing, she's never really had to buy anything for any but Mavis before, and now she has a whole group she must shop for. But when she gets dropped a new case, it really takes on a new level of disturbing. A man who likes to dress up as Santa Claus and comes bearing gifts is using that disguise to get into the apartments and homes of those who use the dating service known as Personally Yours. Who wouldn't open the door for Santa Claus? A lot of people like the use the Santa Gram to deliver gifts to friends. So when people who do so begin ending up dead, the choker has to go on. If people find out someone dressing as Santa is killing people it would cause a panic and every poor charity fellow dressed as Santa would be getting the heck beat out of them. But as body after body begin stacking up, following the great 12 Days of Christmas song where the killer leaves hairpins with a partridge in a pear tree, turtledoves, French hens, calling birds, it seems as if they aren't any closer to catching than they were at the beginning. Deciding to dive right on in, Eve gets it approved to put two officers undercover as people using the dating service - Detective Ian McNab from EDD (Electronic Detectives Division) and Eve's aide, Officer Delia Peabody. Both know that their lives could now be on line if the killer chooses to target them, and both are prepared for that. But as the two undercovers butt heads with one another, Dallas has to face the startled realization that McNab might just be smitten with Peabody. There are still 8 victims left to go, and Eve's running out of time to catch the killer.
This book really bothered me with the fact the dude dressed as Santa - who doesn't love and trust Santa? I don't think I'll be able to look at the Santa's outside grocery stores the same way ever again. It's also nice to see Eve unsure of what to do about Christmas presents - it's especially amusing when she can't figure out what to get Roarke because he practically owns everything anyway! But I was a little mad when Peabody and Eve got into an argument over a guy Peabody was interested in. But both figured out that the other was just trying to be a good friend.

Conspiracy in Death, here I come.

It is just me or in a lot of series when they put out the obligatory Christmas book it's sort of just there. It doesn't really bring anything monumental to the table, it's just a time to visit, put up some lights, solve a light problem and wrap things up with big, glittery bows.

And yet, you tell J.D. Robb to write a Christmas book and SHE FITS ALL OF THE THINGS INTO IT.

I don't know how she does it. I really don't.

A really good book (I read the Indonesian one)... Cannot wait for the next installment: Conspiracy in Death.
There are some annoyed misspelling; some sentences use repetitive words/words with the same meaning. Anyhow still I choose to get the next one ASAP rather than bothered with that editor matters.

During her sophomore year in high school, she transferred to a local public school, where she met Ronald Aufdem-Brinke, her future first husband.

In Augusy 17, 1968, as soon as she had graduated from High School, Eleanor married, against her parents' wishes. The marriage settled in Keedysville, Maryland. Her husband worked at his father's sheet-metal business before joining her parents in their lighting company. While, she worked briefly as a legal secretary. "I could type fast but couldn't spell, I was the worst legal secretary ever," she says now. After their sons, Dan and Jason, were born she stayed home. Calling this her "Earth Mother" years, she spent much of her time doing crafts, including ceramics and sewing her children's clothes. The marriage ended separating, and they obtained the divorce in January 1985.

In February 1979, a blizzard in forced her hand to try another creative outlet. She was snowed in with a three and six year old with no kindergarten respite in sight and a dwindling supply of chocolate. During the now famous blizzard, she pulled out a pencil and notebook and began to write down one of those stories. It was there that a career was born. Several manuscripts and rejections later, her first book, Irish Thoroughbred, was published by Silhouette in 1981 as Nora Roberts, a shortened form of her birth name Eleanor Marie Robertson, because she assumed that all authors had pen names.

Eleanor wrote under the pseudonym Jill March a story for a magazine titled "Melodies of Love".

Eleanor met her second husband, Bruce Wilder, when she hired him to build bookshelves. They were married in July 1985. Her husband owns and operates a bookstore in Boonsboro, Maryland called "Turn the Page Books". Since that time, they've expanded their home, traveled the world.

In 1992, she decided adopted other pseudonym so to publish a futuristic-suspense novels, she first decided to use the pseudonym D.J. MacGregor, but she discovered that this pseudonym was used by another author. In 1995, her first "In Death" serial novel was published under the pseudonym J.D. Robb, the initials "J.D." were taken from her sons, Jason and Dan, while "Robb" is a shortened form of Roberts.

Eleanor has also been known as Sara Hardesty, because when the "Born In" series was released in U.K. it carried that name instead of Nora Roberts. She has since changed publishers.

Eleanor has been plagiarized by another best-selling romance writer, Janet Dailey. The practice came to light after a reader read Nora Roberts' "Sweet Revenge" and Janet Dailey's "Notorious" back-to-back; she noticed several similarities and posted the comparable passages on the Internet. Calling the plagiarism "mind rape," Eleanor sued Janet Daily. In 1997, Janet, admitted to repeatedly plagiarizing from Nora Roberts' work, and that both "Aspen Gold" and "Notorious" lifted heavily from Nora Roberts's work. Both of those novels were pulled from print after Janet's admission. She acknowledged the plagiarism and blamed it on a psychological disorder. In a settlement, Janet paid Eleanor an undisclosed sum, which Eleanor donated to the Literacy Volunteers of America.

A founding member of the Romance Writers of America (R.W.A.), she was the first inductee in the organization's Hall of Fame. She also is a member of several writers groups and has won countless awards from her colleagues and the publishing industry. (less)
