This was a great short story. I'd heard and seen it in different forms, but reading it was special, and I learned something. I would bet that I could now solve a cryptogram puzzle thanks to the detailed lesson in the book! To add to the entertainment value, I listened to the text to speech Kindle option as I read along, and it was a laugh hearing Jupiter's lines. Not bad, the pirate angle, too. Pirates, code cracking, Poe- what could be better? I know it sounds like I am being facetious, but I r More...

I think I actually read this short story for the first time in middle school, but I didn't remember anything about it until I read it again this afternoon. It's a pretty decent story, one that gets better as it progresses. I thought the riddle was quite interesting, and who doesn't like a treasure-hunting adventure story? There is some tough dialect and old school racism in here though, which might make a lot of readers uncomfortable (the whole "black people are stupid and don't know their right More...

I thought The Gold Bug was a lot of fun. Even though I had never read it, it felt nostalgic - like it was the kind of short story that should have been in one of my old grade school textbooks.
I don't have a lot of deep thoughts - it's a fun little mystery tale, of pirates and codes and buried treasure. It's actually a bit more static than that, because it's mostly about after-the-fact explanations and deductive reasoning, but I still found it clever and light (also making it the only Poe tale I' More...

This was a lovely introduction to Poe, in my opinion. It wasn't too heavy or hyped up...it was a smooth transition into his world and I'm so excited to continue with his other short stories. I genuinely enjoyed this; between the friendship of the narrator & Legrand, the many somewhat comedic elements of the adventure and the sheer mystery of it all. Such a good read. Maybe the reason I'm giving this 4 instead of 5 stars is because I wasn't blown away...but that's totally okay because I wasn' More...

I was intrigued enough by the mention of this book in The Information to give it a try. Poe's fascination with cryptography and the apparently lasting effect the story had on Claude Shannon (the father of information theory) had me expecting an exciting and ingenious puzzle. Alas, the cryptogram at the heart of this story is astonishingly simple and the characters' ability to solve it depends mostly upon dumb luck and improbable occurrences (the tree never grew in all those years?). Worst of all More...

This collection actually contains three short stories, although the only mention of this fact is inside the front cover!
The main story is narrated by an unnamed friend of Legrand who observes how his friend becomes obsessed with finding treasure after being bitten by a golden coloured scarab-like beetle. After finding said treasure, Legrand then explains how he went about solving a cipher which would eventually lead him to the hiding place.

Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Gold Bug” is set on Sullivan’s Island in South Carolina. He had spent a portion of his short military career at Fort Moultrie on the island that overlooks Charleston Harbor and knew the location well. It served as atmosphere for this exotic tale of buried treasure, secret messages and gold beetles that look like human skulls.
So what better place for me to read the short work? I spent two weeks on Sullivan’s Island and nearby Isle of Palms, which is where I bought and read More...

"The Gold Bug" is not altogether great, but it's not bad either. Spending most of its time focusing on the mental state of one of the main characters, the story drastically shifts to that of Captain Kidd and his treasure.
The story does not have the greatest flow, but historically, as many have mentioned, this is a story that set the table for many of its kind. This, however, does not make the story great.
A very average story.

This version is actually a collection of three short stories by Poe: "The Gold Bug", "The Sphinx", and "William Wilson". I enjoyed all three, especially "William Wilson" (which, to me, had the most ominous undertones). "The Gold Bug" was more entertaining (and funny) than I anticipated. I'm familiar with both Charleston and Sullivan's Island, so it made the story even more interesting.

When the narrator of this story receives a plea from a man he knows to come visit him quickly, he leaves immediately. A strange mania seems to have befallen the poor man, and he sets off on a strange mission. But, when the man digs up a fortune in gold and gems it seems that the man is not mad after all!
Instead, it seems that finding a golden bug and a seemingly blank piece of parchment, the man soon realized that he had found the directions to Captain Kidd's long-lost treasure. In the first lev More...

Helaas...

I went through a Poe phase when I was young. This is one of the stories that got under my skin. I liked to sit in the sun and read it out loud, using my 'I am reading Poe' voice, which sounded kind of creepy. I wanted to write like him when I grew up, but unfortunately I am still waiting!

the brilliance of mr poe shines brightly here as he take you in this remarkable journey of puzzles and twists to uncover the lost treasure and all in clean simple lines

An attempt to show an Sherlock Holmes reasoning style.
From an uncomplete message, looks for a treasure in an island...
Has some old text decryption methods.
Not bad, give it a try.

Very different from the traditional doom, gloom, gore, and horror that we all expect from Poe. This tale is about cryptology and has a nice little ending that makes you go "Hmmmmm...".

I appreciate this story for what it is. Detective stories with cryptography puzzles were big back in 1843. Unfortunately compared to Poe's other stories this one didn't seem up to par.

My Dad would read me this story when I was younger. Mad props for doing the voices so perfectly. A bit tough to read but it is my favourite Poe story.

Great book for those who want to know how work the substitution cipher, but otherwise... just an absurd rationale.

Inclassificable, pel meu gust. Sensació de no tenir clar que és el que s'ha llegit, tot i que un Poe és un Poe.

I first read The Gold Bug several years ago, when I was only about ten years old, maybe even younger. I remember making -- or more accurately, trying to make -- my own treasure map and riddle after I finished it. At that time, I didn't know who Edgar Allan Poe was, but I decided after reading this story that he is a brilliant writer. I can see now that The Tell-Tale Heart is better written, words- and tone-wise, but The Gold Bug was what made me like Poe as a writer. No doubt, The Gold Bug stren More...

Great stories don't have to be long. Poe does an excellent job maintaining mystery and suspense in this short story.

Like the Dupin stories, this should be read for historical reasons -- important for the development of American fiction. A fun little read, though certainly of an archaic style.

An intriguing mystery/treasure hunt story. Quick read - very entertaining.
