If the quality of a book rested solely on its plot, this would be an excellent novel. The general plot is, of course, standard fantasy fare (save the world!) but its details and the world built to drive it is unique. Also, there appears to be a second plot running under the main one which will obviously be continued in the later books, and this plot seems much more promising.

THE AMULET OF SAMARKAND & THE GOLEM'S EYE BY JONATHAN STROUD: So I met Jonathan Stroud last Friday, author of the Bartimaeus triology, of which the first two are out: "The Amulet of Samarkand" and "The Golem's Eye." He came to the bookstore I work at in Petaluma, Copperfield's, and was pretty entertaining. He was the classic English guy writing about a doomed England of magic and magicians and the regular people known as "commoners": average English accent from ...more

The first part of The Bartimaeus Trilogy, "The Amulet of Samarkand" is set in a mostly recognisable London - admittedly, with a few noticeable changes. The Tower of London is still a feared prison and the Empire (which still exists) is at war with the Czech Republic. Magicians are the ruling class, holding all positions of power, while the non-magical human masses are referred to as commoners. Indeed, the Prime Minister is described at one point as a rather vain magician whose speciali...more

After listening to Simon Jones reading The Amulet of Samarkand, I'm becoming more convinced that I should look for reading material in the YA section of the library and bookstore. Simon Jones is amazing and could probably turn even a mediocre book into a delightful listening experience. I loved his character voices, especially those of Bartimaeus and his jinni nemesis, Faqual (I'm making the spelling of this character's name up), who is bound to show up for a final showdown with Bartimaeu...more

This book had some ground to make up to begin with because after checking its copyright date, all I could think was, "It's a book...about a magic apprentice...in England...written after Harry Potter." And that meant that I was skeptical, although not to the degree that I thought the main character would be named Barry Cotter or something.
Well, there is one big way in which it's like Harry Potter...
...I stayed up all night reading it.

Recently I’ve been reading more books with mistakes and less detail which made this book such a relief to read. Not only was it well written, there weren’t any major mistakes (bravo to the editor) and it was quite descriptive without being overly done.
It’s set in a modern London but with a magical difference, magicians are the ones that run the country. Young children are given up by their parents to be apprenticed as magicians and then they go on to working in parliament or some other c...more

In a world in which magicians dominate and rule the non-magical “commoners,” a young magician’s apprentice named Nathaniel summons the djinn Bartimaeus, a task well beyond the capabilities of an average apprentice. Determined to avenge himself on Simon Lovelace, the magician who violently humiliated him, Nathaniel orders Bartimaeus to steal the Amulet of Samarkand from Lovelace’s keeping. But his simple revenge scenario is soon abandoned when he finds himself caught up in Lovelace’s pl...more

Although this promising start to a new trilogy by Jonathan Stroud gets all-too-often compared to Harry Potter (wizards in London), it takes quite a different turn.
In a world of bureaucratic magicians who get their power from summoning magical creatures like djinn from another plane, Nathaniel is apprenticed to a horrible man as a young boy. Impatient, and chaffing at the bit, he summons an upper level djinn called Bartimaeus and uses him to steal a powerful amulet, an amulet that another po...more

Well, I have to admit that I was disappointed with this read. I didn't care for the book that much, which is surprising since this is my favorite genre. As much as I didn't like the book however, I have to give props to Johnathon Stroud for creativity. I think it took guts to write a book about an 11-year old wizard after the raging success of Harry Potter. Stroud uses a lot of creativity in this book that I was impressed by. For example, I thought it very clever how he wrote about how the ...more

I really loved this book, the first of the Bartimaeus Trilogy.
It's tempting to compare the book to the Harry Potter series. Young boy. Magic. Sneaking around. Breaking the rules. Stern teachers. But the similarities really end there.
In Stroud's world, magicians have no power of their own - their power lies in the knowledge of how to summon (and enslave) spirits, like the djinni Bartimaeus, to do their will. These magicians are the proud, arrogant, entitled upperclass that pretty m...more

Well, Penyihir dan Inggris...

This is a difficult book to rate: It was very well-written, with an intriguing plot and engaging wit. That being said, I must admit that it was more frustrating than enjoyable for me.
The main problem was that I disliked both of the main characters: one is a wily demon (Bartimaeus), and the other is a 12-year-old kid who is way too smart for his own good (Nathaniel). I think you'd get a similar result if you paired C.S. Lewis's Screwtape with Rowling's Draco Malfoy. Don't get me wrong - I...more

This is a Great Trilogy. It is teen level but one of my favorites. The story grabbed my interest from the first few minutes. There is an interesting interplay between an inexperienced but ambitious 12 year old apprentice magician who is a bit arrogant and demon he summons: a medium level Genie who talks of himself as if he were the mightiest of demons but is really interested in saving his own skin and prefers to avoid battles if possible and has a delightfully sardonic sense of humor (I want to...more

This was an unexpected surprise. I thought I was going to be reading another odd fantasy in a Potter-like setting - modern world plus magic, but it's really a treat.
It's told from two points of view - the title character, Bartimaeus (in first person), and the magician who summons him. You have to get used to the footnotes when in Bartimaeus's story - he says it's because he thinks on multiple planes at once, but they're usually used as sort of an aside. They probably really irritate some p...more

A relatively new piece of fantasy. Centred on an alternate London, the story takes place in an era reminiscent of the 80's I suppose, in terms of technological and social development. Alternate "real" universes aren't uncommon in fantasy, but Stroud fuses the idea of magic and demons with a clear bourgeois ruling class quite well.

So I guess the Harry Potter series has ruined me and I only have a taste for young adult fantasy novels--they are just so much more fun than reading serious and depressing adult books. I read this after finishing the "His Dark Materials" series, and it was a nice change from that series because "His Dark Materials" was pretty serious--it was a good read, but there wasn't a lot of humor. About half of the book is narrated by Bartimaeus, a "djinn" (or demon) who is ...more
