A set of four novels, set hundreds of years after the original Shannara trilogy. Unlike the original trilogy, however, this series is all one, cohesive story, in contrast to the three isolated stories of the originals. It is set in a future Four Lands in which the Federation of the Southland has driven off the Elves, enslaved the Dwarves, and outlawed magic. Only the rebel Free-born, led by Padishar Creel, dare to resist. The series begins with The Scions of Shannara, when the Ohmsford descendan...more
This was the first of Terry Brooks I immersed myself in. Of course, any fan knows that this series isn't a starting point! It ruined the more classic Sword of Shannara series for me, as it came before this adventure. Still, The Elf Queen of Shannara is one if my all-time favorite stories and it is book 3 in this particular compilation.
This compilation mixes the classic, poised, and epic feel of Sword of Shannara with a modern fun twist. Think a little less Lord of the Rings and a lot more The H...more

Now that I've read both the initial trilogy and now this 4-book series, I can say that I personally enjoyed the initial trilogy more. However, this was still fun to read. I really enjoyed the first three books in this second set, but the final story just seemed to kinda drag, and then wrap up very quickly. Sure, it tied up the loose ends and whatnot, but it just seemed too predictable. The story about Walker trying to bring back Paranor and the book about Wren going to find the Elves were both g...more
Terry Brooks has done an excelent job with the mixture of journeys in the magical world once again.
Hundreds of years have passed since The Sword of Shannara, The Elfstone of Shannara, and the Wishsong of Shannara. Through the years the talismans have been misplaced and hidden either by the Federation or the Shadowens. The magic has been forced away and evil lerks the Four Lands and is killing and destroying everything which is controlled by the Shadowen and the Federation.

I read the original Shannara series in my early adulthood and was captavated by them. However this series is even better in my opinion. Brooks uses all the same characters as most of Fantasy but no one writes more likeable characters or better paced books in the genre. This series is right up there with The Lord of The Rings for me.
Terry Brooks has a way of leading you into a different world, and making you want to be there, within the horrors and the utopia. These books could almost make me believe in a history as he lays it out, with magic, elves, and all sorts of beasts. Wishful thinking? Maybe, but mostly beautiful novels. Magical, really.
I have tried so hard to read this book and this admission may well cause righteous indignation and justifiable ire from the aficionados of Mr Brooks. Where I went wrong I wot not but after the first hundred pages I was becoming bogged down by the derivative story and a writing style that jarred every time I turned a page. I could find nothing in the characters that made we want to follow their quest to find whatever it was they wanted to find and I have had to give this one up, sure in the knowl...more
Brooks books are solid...sometimes a little boring, sometimes really great. I love the world he's created, but there are things that could be better. Some of the stories really pull you in while other portions of the same story, I'd cut if I could. His books are comfortable. They are like visiting a good friend.

This is a blatant Tolkien rip-off. Unoriginal and fairly uninspiring although the style is good making it not completely crap! The story plodded through a somewhat pedestrian thousand pages with a gloomy sense of inevitability about how it would all end. I probably only finished it because I was stuck in a tent in the Arctic...

Terry Brooks was born in Illinois in 1944, where he spent a great deal of his childhood and early adulthood dreaming up stories in and around Sinnissippi Park, the very same park that would eventually become the setting for his bestselling Word & Void trilogy. He went to college and received his undergraduate degree from Hamilton College, where he majored in English Literature, and he received...more
