A combination of a mystery with crossword puzzles. As the readers solve the crosswords with the main character, we solve the mystery too. The mysteries are interesting (yes, there is more than one crime), the crosswords are fun, and the book is easy to read. One warning: The book is about breeding horses for racing so the crosswords contain hints about famous racehorses. If you don't know much about this area you may find the puzzles frustrating. You can solve as much as you know and then check ...more

Though similar in theme to the previous novels, DEATH ON THE DIAGONAL is one of the best of Nero Blanc's delightful puzzlers with the clues found as always in the puzzles. The insight into a horse farm operation anchors the fun story line as well as presents several viable suspects with means and opportunities. Roscoe and Belle look to the puzzles for motive. Readers will enjoy this fine treat as the whodunit is cleverly devised to make the crosswords even more enticing.

Your typical Belle and Rosco book with crosswords thrown in for fun.
The book opens with the barn of a well-to-do family burning down and Rosco being pulled in as part of the insurance investigation. Meanwhile, Belle is getting the lowdown on the family from her gossip columnist friend. Tie all this in with a client who has been scammed out of $250,000 and you get a book Nero Blanc regulars will enjoy.

Another horse themed book--I don't necessarily focus on horse-centric books, but I seem to be in a routine right now. Blanc's books are fun because they combine reading with crossword puzzles. This one added the twist that someone--criminal---is also producing crossword puzzles with varying degrees of success. Just fun entertainment reading.
