For all its storied past and lofty reputation, poetry is really just the art of noticing, naming, and comparing the stuff of this world. Unlike the eye of modern science (which sees the world as a giant specimen for us to dissect), poetry fosters and nurtures life by finding wonder in the nooks and crannies of ordinary life. I read this. And I still write lousy poetry. But that's just me.

Recommends it for: Christian poets, mainly, but any writer can benefit from it

The only books that I read when I was younger about how to write poetry were written by people who weren't poets. Sometimes they weren't even good writers. So I was very glad to find a whole book about writing poetry that was written by a poet. I could really tell the difference. The whole book reads like poetry; and it not only taught me more about how to write poems, it inspired me to write more. It also contains a lot of great poems by other authors, which, in my opinion, make it worth buying ...more

This was an enjoyable introduction to the writing of poetry, sprinkled with delightful examples of student poetry and samples of esteemed classics alike. Even the glossary of terms was readable. The author also provides a "teacher toolbox" to help get ideas flowing, and a small poets corner at the end.

I have never aspired to be a poet and doubt my capacity for it, but am willing try my hand at it in order to provide a "life-long learner" example to the upcoming seminar for which I read this boo

A great beginners guide to poetry. It is also a good read for those who would rather read, or study, poetry than write it. It covers the basics of poem writing, introduces different forms, and has a nice collection of poems at the end to read. A handy book, with exercises to practice the skills being taught in that chapter. A read more than once book if you are dedicated to writing poetry. I have a greater appreciation for poetry after reading this book.

Incredibly inspiring, actually made me feel like I could write poetry. I DID!

First she described me to a tee: a crow, a collector of words, etc. Then she gave tiny assignments that seemed fun to try, FOR A FORTY YEAR OLD! My little attempts I loved like babies. I highly recommend this for common people who like to write.

This is a great book to teach poetry. Students will learn not only how to appreciate poetry more but also how to write poetry without fear. The exercises are simple and easy to follow. Enjoyable for the veteran or novice.

One of those how-to books that makes you certain anybody can do it. Maybe one day I'll implement it.

I am no writer and certainly no poet.
That said, this book is a great resource to learn about using words in a logical and beautiful way. Very helpful resource.
