Bethany's parents have acted weird for as long as she can remember - making sure she's never alone, not allowing her to attend sleepovers, and generally being overprotective. What do they possibly think could happen to her?

These actions pale in comparison to the way her parents begin to act around Bethany's thirteenth birthday. Her mother is constantly crying, for starters, and nothing Bethany says or does seems to help. This comes to a head when her parents whisk her off on a car ride to stay w...more

For almost thirteen-year-old Bethany, life has suddenly and unexplicably taken a strange turn. For a girl who has never spent a night away from her parents, she's suddenly hustled into the car by her sad-looking father, subjected to listening to her sobbing mother, and unceremoniously dropped off in the middle of the night in a town she's never heard of, at the home of a woman claiming to be her Aunt Myrlie. Her parents are a lot older than her friend's parents...more

This book was AMAZING!! I would totally recomend it to people who like mysteries.

They finally reach her Aunt Myrile's house, who she didn't know existed, and leave her there. They don't come back. Her only clue of what's going on is something she overheard her dad say: "She doesn't know anything about El...more

I read this book in one sitting, and while I found it to be a generally enjoyable story, I think it definitely could have been better.

First of all, not a lot happens - we see a lot of Bethany just sitting in the house thinking. And while some pondering on the part of the main character is to be expected, that's almost all this book was. Something would happen and then Bethany would think about it, and then something else would happen and she would think about that. Her thoughts were interesting,...more

"Then one morning he hustles the entire family into the car, drives across several state-lines and leaves Bethany with an aunt she never knew existed, Bethany has no idea what's going on." Bethany, a modest and scared twelve year old girl, is not an ordinary person; she has an identity she can't get from other people that look at her with sorrow, having crying and worried parents that don't e...more

This is one of my favorites! It involves a great mystery with a little science. I thought I had it figured out until I found out the real truth, and I was shocked! Great page turner!

Summary: As the novel opens, Bethany is anxious; her father has barely let her out of his sight and her mother has been weeping for months. Now, a few days before her 13th birthday, her father has put the two of them in the car, headed West. He leaves Bethany with her Aunt Myrlie and drives off with no explanation. T...more

In the novel “Double Identity” by Margaret Peterson Haddix, Bethany, a 12 year old girl faces the challenges of her parents who are slightly older than most of the parents of her friends being over protective. Bethany’s mom will not stop crying and her dad is acting super weird around her. They are going on a super long road trip and her parents will not tell her where they are going. All of a sudden, they pull up into a driveway of an unknown town, and an unknown neighborhood that Bethany had n...more

"Double Identity" was a great book because the plot had such an unusual twist that really took me by surprise. I usually never read the fantasy genre type of books, but I really enjoying reading this. Bethany Cole lived a normal life until her parents take her to her Aunt Myrlie, who she had never met. They leave her in the town of Sanderfield with her aunt, abandoning her with no explanation. After being in the town and hearing her parents on the phone, she continuously hears a reference to som...more

Bethany thinks that she is an only child and normal like everyone else. The only problem is- she’s not. Weird things have happened before her big trip. Her mother is crying all the time and her father is following her everywhere she goes. She wonders, “What is happening?” Suddenly, in one day that all changes. Her parents drop her off at her Aunt Myrile’s house. She didn't even know she had an aunt! Her parents say that she will be safer there and no one will be able to find her. Bethany wonders...more

Margaret Peterson Haddix is a great writer! Her books are meant to horrify the reader- or at least cause some serious consternation. I didn't find this book to be horrifying or cause me any consternation at all. It's hard for me to even rate or review it because I feel an emotional yearning and having lost a beloved daughter myself, completely understand the parents and what they did. I probably would only have rated this book 3 stars if I didn't identify with it so much. It's very good but I ha...more

Double Identity is about a girl named Bethany who finds out a huge secret that she can't believe. Bethany finds out that she had a sister named Elizabeth and she died in a car crash. Since Bethany's parents loved Elizabeth so much that when she died they were so devastated that they decided to make a clone out of her. That clone turns out to be Bethany. They named her Bethany because she looks a lot like Elizabeth and a lot of people knew a...more

I thought this book was great. It was perfect for me because it had those sudden twist like a roller coaster, at night. It was a mystery that you think is easy to solve until you hit near the end and all of your guesses are gone and you have to start from scratch. Because they give you more in depth information. If you like a good mystery you should read this book. So far it is probably one of my favorites of all time. The plot was to get you thinking her parents left to go see her sister, then...more

(Pardon spelling mistakes, review composed on a nook) This was required reading for the literacy initiative my school (where I teach) has undertaken. Though I dont typically read YA titles, now that I'm going into my second year as a middle school theater teacher, I'll have to put my lit-snob tendencies aside and read much more from the catagory.
Over all it held my attention. I was annoyed at the brevity of the chapters, but despite this, the relationships of the characters were fairly well rep...more

Bethany's mother has been crying nonstop since her dad hustled them into the car and they set out on a journey with no obvious destination. After traveling for miles and miles though country that Bethany does not recognize, she is glad just to stop. She doesn't even know which state they are in, though it must be further south than their home in Philadelphia since the trees still have their autumn colors.

Her dad is greeted warmly while Bethany and her mother, still sobbing, wait in the car. She...more

I enjoyed the characters in the book; Double Identity. The characters accurately portrayed real emotions throughout the story. They were challenged with a problem and in order to overcome it they had to pick up and use small clues that they found throughout the story. The main character Bethany was left with an aunt she has never met before. She is a teenager, already dealing with life issues and is now left with nothing. She had grown up with the p...more

I read Double Identity by Margaret Peterson Haddix. The main characters in this book are 13 year old Bethany, Her aunt Myrlie and Bethany’s dead sister Elizabeth. The characters in the book are very well told and explained. The author gives great detail about each character, you feel as if you really know them by the end of the book. Bethany comes off like any other teenage girl, a little shy but no abnormal. Elizabeth on the other hand was totally out there. She was outgoing and into sports. Th...more

The Book “Double Identity” by Margret Peterson Haddix is an ok Mystery kind of book. Bethany, the main character, is a confused. She doesn’t understand her past, she doesn’t understand why her dad is very protective, she doesn’t understand while her mother is crying all the time, and she really doesn’t understand why her parents dropped her off at her aunt Myrile’s house (an aunt she has never even met)All she knows is that everyone is hiding everything from her and she is not safe for some reas...more

Bethany, an only child, is dropped by her parents with an aunt she’s never met. And then her parents disappear. Aunt Myrlie seems to know something Bethany doesn’t and isn’t revealing. But then her father calls but doesn’t explain where he is or why they abandoned Bethany

Another gripper by author. Interesting perspective on the issues of cloning. I could see the characters and felt as though I might just run into them in my community, very believable, exhibiting moments of courage and touches of...more

Double Identity I think was an extremely well written book. It contained suspense, tension, and mystery, which combined to make a very interesting book. One thing I really like was that everything was suspenseful. On page 63 it says ‘She speaks. I hear her voice as if I’m drowning and she’s far away on the shore.
“Elizabeth,” she says, “was your sister.” I pulled back. I’m drowning for sure.
“I’m an only child,” I say.
“So was Elizabeth,” she says.’
After I read this line, I realized that the autho...more

Double Identity is a very good book. It has a twisty plot, but it’s very interesting. Bethany and her parents seem to be in a great deal of danger. She is very curious. Her parents take her to stay with an aunt that she has never heard of before. Her life before this situation was perfect. She was spoiled, home schooled, and got whatever she wanted. Her parents were very protective, and know they just leave her with someone she has never met. She wants to know what is going on, but there is no...more

If you like stories with a lot of suspense, you'll love Double Identity by Margaret Peterson Haddix. It is a total page-turner!

It's about a twelve-year-old girl named Bethany who is an only child. She and her parents are very close; they spend a lot of quality time together. But her parents can also be over-protective. Bethany's never even spent the night away from home before.

Then one day, something really strange happens. Her parents pack up three suitcases, put Bethany in the backseat of th...more

Every time I read a book by Margaret Peterson Haddix, I can't help but think, "Oh, Ms. Haddix. You have such interesting, intelligent ideas--and yet, your attempts to dumb them down for a middle-grade audience totally cripple the execution. Please, won't you try writing a full-length mature YA/adult novel? I bet it would be aces!"

She never does, though. Which means that at the end of every single one of her works...more

This book was read to me by my 6th grade reading teacher, and after years of reading poorly constructed plots in books, I decided to read Double Identity again.

This book is full of suspense and wonder. Margaret Peterson Haddix did a wonderful job creating this story. For thirteen years, Bethany has been living a hidden life behind her parent's watchful eye. They have been hiding their mysterious past. Now, after being abruptly sent to stay with a family member she knows nothing about, Bethany be...more

“A thousand times today I've started to open my mouth, started to squeak out, "Can you tell me...? But then I'd look into the front seat, at my mother's silent shaking, my father's grim profile, the mournful bags under his eyes, and all the questions I might ask seemed abusive. Assault and battery, a question mark used like a club. My parents are old and fragile. I'd have to heartless to want to hurt them.” 14 people liked it
“The sudden silence is horrifying, and it seems to catch my mother off guard. A tiny whimper escapes her, the sound amplified in the stillness. Surely, my father hears her now; surely he and I can't go on pretending she isn't crying.” 11 people liked it
