This crime/romance/travel guide to Australia story by Nancy Curtemanwas very enjoyable.
The focus is on two American women who arrive in Sydney to visit a friendwho now lives there, only to discover she has been murdered. Then the chase is on to try and find out who could have committed this crime on such a good-hearted young woman.
There are many characters throughout the story and as it slowly unfolds I found myself suspecting so many of them and turning the pages to see what would transp

The plot thickens as you meet the cast of characters: there’s the sweet landlady

Nancy Curteman travels the world and creates mystery novels as she goes. Murder Down Under is, of course, set in Australia, and a hopping good story it is. Lysistrata Weston (read the book for an explanation of her name) travels to Sydney for a conference on sexual harassment, but encounters much more than harassment when she and her partner discover a body in an alley—the body of the friend with whom they planned to have dinner.
From that point on, the conference is forgotten, and we’re off int

Nancy Curteman's novel, Murder Down Under, is a fast paced case full of twists and turns- and plenty of red herrings. One minute I am suspecting the sweet old landlady offering up her sweet chocolates, and the next I am keeping my eyes on the Head Detective Christie! Curteman's novel is full of Australian history; she plugs many things into the novel, from local favorites of food and drink, to compelling nuggets of info on the native Aborigine. I found myself drawn into the setting, wanting to ...more

Recommends it for: Mystery readers, Travelers
I picked this book because I've always wanted to visit Australia, to see, hear, smell, experience life there. I was delighted. It's all there, clad in the cloak of a mystery story, with distinctive banter between two women sleuths, one black, one white, caught in Sydney by the murder of a close friend. The flavor of Alice Springs came through clearly--the heat, the flies, the aborigines. Wonderful information about Ayers Rock and what it feels like to be on sheep station. The story picks up ...more

I really enjoyed this book. The title Murder Down Under caught my eye. I don’t normally look for mysteries, but I was glad I picked this one up. If you’ve never traveled to Australia but always wanted to, the author takes you from Sydney on a side trip to Alice Springs, and Uluru where in the midst of a blooming, slightly awkward but interesting romance, she gives you tidbits about the Northern Territory and its culture.

The characters are original, likeable, or not, but all of them interesting,
