Sometimes when I'm hanging out with Patrick, Jeff will come home and hijack him, and they'll start doing something together that I can't or don't want to do. Tonight it was Excite Truck on the Nintendo Wii, so I retreated to my room and finished reading an essay by Susan Orlean about Bankock's Khao San Road in an old Best American Travel Writing, and then I read the entire book Revolting Rhymes by Roald Dahl. I am ashamed to even have this on my read books list, except to provide a warning to other parents who want to avoid exposing their children to garbage disguised as literature. I am sorry I did not review this book before my kids checked it out of the *juvenile* literature section of the library. Guess I thought it was "weird" kids humor, twists on words or something of the sort. I won't make that mistake again. This book was in very poor taste, especially as a children's book. I'...more

My childhood basically revolved around the works of Roald Dahl, but no book has stayed with me quite the same way as Revolting Rhymes.
To this day I still recite "Cinderella" and my sister dared me to get a tattoo with the words.
"The small girl smiled. One eyelid flickers.
She whipped the pistol from her knickers."
I didn't get the tattoo but I love that line =)

This clever little book is a delight for both children and adults. Dahl takes the oh-so-familiar nursery rhymes you're used to--Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, Goldilocks, Jack and the Beanstalk, Three Little Pigs--and turns them upside down and inside out.

Ya just gotta love Dahl! He is so perfectly in tune with children's hearts! He's a bit like Bugs Bunny in that the surface craziness appeals to the child while the deeper exploration cracks up the adult in us.
All Dahl is a buy!

I absolutely loved this book. It is a collection of six humourous, traditional folk/fairy tales that have been turned upside down, reinterpreted and replace the traditional 'happily-ever-after' endings. They are particularly gruesome and revolting as the title of the book suggests. However be sure to read the poems beforehand for age-appropriate vocabulary as I felt 'Cinderella' would not be for use in the classroom.

Well, I really liked these fractured fairy tales in rhyme, but I'm not sure they were intended for kids. Then again, what European publishers allow in print for young children is more liberal, I've noticed, than what is allowed by American publishers. This book contained some mild swear words, albeit most in slang that American kids might not get. Revolting Rhymes sees Roald Dahl take some of the most notable fairy tales and put his own twist on them. The fact that so many young people know the classic stories is what makes Dahl's re-interpretations of them so funny. He takes well known tales and exaggerates the characters and twists the plots, for example Little Red Riding Hood is not the innocent young girl we see in the original story!

This is one of my favourite books in the world. I like it because Roald Dahl created his story rhymes by taking traditional fairy tales and twisting them so that the reader has a different perspective on the original. As well as this they are very clever and funny.

"Revolting Rhymes" is truly a revolting series of famous fairy tales that have horror twist to each one. My most favorite story out this book is "Jack and the Beanstalk" where Jack has to deal with his insensitive mother while getting some golden leaves from the giant's beanstalk.

It's that time of year where I rack my brain for birthday present ideas for my godson, Cole. The child has every toy and game that one could possibly wish for and so I rarely feel too bad about being the reliable godmother who always gets him a book. I think this book is incredibly whity and very humerous because all the time, he finds ryhms, (hey I just made one)and he twists ordanary fairy tales and makes them into a ryming discusting story. for example the three litle pigs,as you think it is all going good the wolf says he's going to blow up the pigs house with dinamite! so he calls litle red riding hood and asks for her help so she comes and shoot's the wolf but she also kills the litle pig!

Lately, I've been in a fairy tale mood, and not your typical fairy tales either; the fractured ones. I always seem to enjoy those the best. So when I heard Roald Dahl (the creator of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) had a book of his own version of some classic fairy tales, I had to check it out... even if it required venturing to the children's part of the library. :)

Too good to be missed. If you read the presentation, you'll notice that Dahl reinterpreted 6 famous tales, in verse, and added his own personal touch. I'm pretty sure they're all free on different sites, or the ebook as a whole. I found Snow-White and the Seven Dwarfs in a bit.

We had to peform this book as play when i was in year 4 lol and i had to act out little red riding hood's rhyme and thats probably why i luff this book, cause everyone dressed up and performed the characters and the book itself is really clever and it just appeals to that age group of kids but also adults can like too.

I'd read some of these before, but then I started using the stories for the third and fourth graders I worked with last semester. These are hilarious, and I had to white out/ not say some of the dirty words when reading them w/ the kids. Woo R.D.!
Great read that puts a little bit of realism and personality into the classic rhymes like Little Red Riding Hood, who I won't think the same about ever.

This is an amazing book. The stories in it are classics, but the author manages to add some creepy details and make them more fun! Kids love this kind of horror details. I found it lovely and the rhymes are great!
