Cluster by Piers Anthony.
This is an enjoyable little adventure. Certainly not for children though. I enjoyed the strange creativeness Piers has with the aliens. Beings with wheels for legs? Who would've thought?
Among my favorites I must say are the two species of Canopians. Slave and Master. Master and Slave. A strange relation, but justified given the circumstances in the book. Flint is entertaining, although not the most lovable of literary characters. He seems great for an early Piers Anth...more

I first read this book from the library as a young teen. Recently, I bought a used copy, since a few of the ideas have stuck with me over the years (mostly transfer of consciousness). I remembered to expect Piers Anthony's typical focus on sex, and likewise his flawless hero.
I consider Anthony a diehard Mary Sue, but he is a decent writer and Cluster is a good piece of fluff if you are in the mood for such. His descriptions of alien worlds and cultures, as well as their reproductive specifics, i...more

Sci Fi novel of a galactic caveman who gets his kirlian aura beamed around the galaxy, inhabiting strange alien races, all in attempt to combat the Andromedan threat. I read the Cluster series when I was a young adult. I remember liking the inventive take on diverse alien cultures that the protagonist would inhabit. Ultimately, there would be some explanation of how the aliens procreated and our hero would use that to his advantage. Not sure if I'd care to reread as an adult.
Reminds me a bit of the L. Ron Hubbard series Mission Earth, although this is definitely better, IMHO. The structure of the book almost suggests an episodic approach, which is to say that it almost reads like a television series, one episode per chapter, building the overall plot arc. In typical Piers Anthony style, I found it easy to read, but perhaps too easy.
If I had to criticize, I'd say that this is less science and more fiction, and as such rang somewhat untrue to me.

Couldn't finish this. Use of kirlian aura and tarot themes made this sci-fi novel a bit too hokey for my taste. The hopping from planet to planet and inhabiting the bodies of host species was interesting at first, but the intergalatic-war-brewing plot moved along too slowly for me to care.
I picked up this and the second book in the series at a used book shop while on vacation in Manitoba and will probably return them both to my local used book store.

I have to appreciate it for the sheer imagination that went into the story and the various alien races within. A lot of this book is really neat. However, it loses a star because Anthony lets his typical dirty old man ways cloud the story. There's a point where "attraction and shagging through the species" ceases to add to the story.

There's always something a little disjointed about Piers Anthony's writing for me. Still, the story was interesting and the style very typical. there's plenty of his I have yet to read, i'm sure.

Never one for series with revolving main characters, this series was an exception to that... spanning thousands of years from start to finish, all linked together with the theme of scientific use of the Kirlian aura. And Anthony creates some of the most unique, interesting, and truly "alien" alien races ever.

Though he spent the first four years of his life in England, Piers never returned to live in his country of birth after moving to Spain and immigrated to America at age six. After graduating with a B.A. from Goddard College, he married one of his fellow students and and spent fifteen years in an assortment of professions before he began writing fiction full-time.
