The Year of the Rooster referred to the Oriental zodiac. It is the sign of dawn and awakening, triumph and success and can only be achieved at the price of hard work and patience. It also referred to a trinket: a charm that was given to Peter Eliot for good luck. The longtime bachelor was a business owner in Japan, former US military soldier and recently-recruited spy. A former acquaintance had arrived unexpectedly at his door and then was murdered.
