According to Wolverton's son, some one told his father that all those little lines and dots covered up his basic lack of talent. Wolverton was willing to agree. But his grotesque faces fascinated a generation of Mad readers, and seeing this generous selection confirms his place in the annals of graphic weirdness.

I remember a time, as a teenager, that I really wanted to draw like Basil Wolverton. I'm not even certain I knew his name, or when his work first struck me: perhaps the Topps Co. stickers he did in the 70s, perhaps the covers he did for DC's Plop! comic, perhaps the one page he did for the first issue of Crazy (Marvel's Mad rip-off), or maybe even a reproduction of his original work for Mad, particularly the cover to issue #11. Ce livre n’est pas vraiment pour être lu, mais pour être admiré au même titre qu’un livre de photos. Si vous ne le connaissez pas, son oeuvre vaut la peine d’être découverte.
