The Worth of Art

In the art market, the value of a work has never been as relative as it is today. An intricate marketing system has been established that makes the price of an item dependent not just on its quality but also on the identity of the seller and the buyer and even on the location of the sale. Through anecdotes and famous stories, The Worth of Art takes an in-depth look at exac ...more

'The Worth of Art' by Judith Benhamou-Huet illustrates the influences that determine why art is worth so much money and why. So far, it has clarified my inital predictions that the worth of art is defined by society, trends and people with money. It focuses on the auction houses tactics in increasing the value of art, asserting it as an addition to a desired lifestyle that many can afford alongside the status of a collector. The beginning of the book captured my imagination as well as my attenti ...more

this book caught my eye on the shelves of the local library when i was browsing the art section. it's a subject that interests me - how do you assign a monetary value to an artwork - and this book's nicely sized. a quick flick through showed that it wouldn't be too hard to read.

the original was written in french and the writing has an interesting quirkiness about it, partly because it has been translated but also because benhamou-huet
Given its intriguing subject matter -- the value of art, and particularly the reasons for the rapidly escalating prices being paid in recent years for modern and contemporary art -- this book was quite disappointing. I'm not sure if that was a result of 1) the author's often awkward syntax, 2) a bad translation from French to English, 3) the inherently squishy subject matters of art, art criticism, and economics applied to abstract concepts, or 4) a combination of all of these things, but I want ...more

Interesting thesis but unfortunately dated (explaining the 2 stars). The facts in the book are dated and not really relevant now. But the thinking is sound. I think it would be interesting to update the thesis with what the market is now after the 2008 financial crash.

The contemporary art market has become even more an investment strategy and the ground for much scamming and fraud attempts.
