i enjoyed reading these, but found the main character very shallow in her some of her choices. Tamora Pierce is haled (not sure if i spelled this correctly) as a feminist and a good author for young women to read. But, if being a feminist means that you pick your 'partners' in your teens and more than one before considering marriage, i don't agree. it was almost like that aspect was put in abstractly with no other purpose than to push the author's feminist views. The first of these books are rat...more
Just because these books were written for ages 12+ doesn't excuse the poor punctuation and grammar. There were countless times when a " was left out at the start of dialogue.
But in actual fact, i did enjoy the basic storyline i think it could have worked as a young adult book if it was more fleshed out and less predictable. A lot of times the story went by too quickly and important plot points were just brushed over like the death of Alanna's father etc.

At the risk of sounding TOO enthusiastic, this series changed my life. The heroine, Alanna, is one of my favorite characters, from any book. Alanna is a girl who wants to become a knight, except that girls aren't allowed. So she disguises herself as a boy and sets out to become one anyway. Alanna is an incredible character. When I was younger, I basically wanted to be her when I grew up. She's stubborn, determined, and incredibly brave, but also human--she makes mistakes, she has struggles, and...more
I read these books when I was a kid, or at least the first two because that was all the library had. Cross-dressing to become a knight, boyfriends, horses, it was about all my 11 year old self could handle. I checked them out over and over thinking they were pretty risque, (she mentions her period). I wanted to read them again to see if they were as good as I remember, and to find out the end of the story that I have hung onto for 20 years.

I read these books when I was 11 or 12, and really loved them. As a young girl reading fantasy books, it was rare to see a story revolving around a heroine (and even rarer to see a heroine that was actually heroic). Alanna defies the traditional gender roles of her society to become a skilled knight. Instead of being rescued, she saves the lives of the men and boys around her. The plot is filled with action, adventure, magic, and romance. It was well-thought-out to appeal to young girls.

The Song of the Lioness Quartet is an inspiring series about Alanna, the girl who became a powerful knight-sorceress by dressing as a boy for over five years and working her tail off. Tamora Pierce has written tons since then, but this was her first series and her first of four series about the land of Tortall. The series is VERY romantic with lots of adventure. If you liked Graceling, you'll love the books of the Song of the Lioness quartet. The series follows Alanna from the time she goes to c...more

God help me, I want to really like this series. I mean, after all, it's a girl who kicks ass and takes names, and does so as a knight.
And yet, Alanna is such a Mary-Sue that I just want to throttle her. Don't get me wrong, there are times when she's a compelling character, and then Pierce has to make her super-special and it drives me up the wall. Purple eyes? Has The Gift? I find Keladry of Mindelan, of the Protector of the Small quartet to be much more compelling and much more easy to like - s...more

I enjoyed these books a lot when I first read them, in my teens.
Sadly, I think this series is the one that has aged the least well. While I still enjoy most of Pierce's books now, in my twenties, this one just doesn't thrill me. The plot is not terribly original, although I enjoy the overall setting and the characters. I wish she'd put in more effort to tie this series to the latter Tortall books. Characters come back, and that's fun, but so many of the worldbuilding threads in Song of the Lione...more

As far as Ms. Pierce's book series go I hated this one. In the first book I liked how strong headed and devoted Alanna was to her cause, that she worked hard to prove that she could do what the men could and better. Ive always enjoyed strong female characters, but I hated how the series went on. I hated that as soon as the Prince knew what was going on that there was a sudden love interest that had no real developement in the story line. I also hated how Alanna seemed to follow the line of lust...more

One of my absolute favorite series. I found these at a fairly young age, and I distinctly remember them having a huge impact. I fell in love with the character of Alanna (so much so, that I even wrote down the name as a possible option for a baby name if I ever had children) and the time period in which the story takes place is one of my favorites. I've always wanted to learn how to sword-fight and shoot a bow and arrow. Medieval-ish time periods rank among some of my most favorite. This book ha...more
I really enjoyed all of the Tamora Pierce books I have read so far. This series is also full of fun, adventure, and magic. While the romantic aspect of this one is slightly more pronounced than in other series I have recently read by this author, I was able to live through it without being overcome by embarrassment at the author's need to explore sexuality. I would give it a PG-13, but I'm a mother so I might be a little over protective. :) Lots of good to say about this series, but my favorite...more
I love these books with a passion. All I can say is that George is the most amazingest person EVERRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jon is a whiney little pain in the ass. I detest that boy with a passion. He's not that bad in the Immortals, I actually quite liked him in those books. Num air annoyed me though. I also loved George in those as well <3<3<3. Alanna is a strong character and I love her. I like seeing her grow as a girl, later as a woman, and a character in general. She's amazing in every way...more
These books (along with the Wild Magic series) were and are my favorite comfort books. Alanna is an incredible heroine! She is brave, strong, perseveres, and isn't perfect (gasp!). She's short, stocky and has a wicked temper. I love imperfect heroines, not just ones that think they are. She owns her sexuality as well and is never ever painted in a negative light because of it. In a male-dominated society, she succeeds because of her grit and determination. I reread these books every couple of mo...more
I first read Alanna when I was eleven, but wasn't able to get my hands on the rest of the series until I was twelve or thirteen. I've re-read the series a few times since then, and I was feel very uplifted afterward. The books are all easy, fast reads; they are part of my go-to reads when I'm depressed and need an emotional escape.

These books were my first real readings of fantasy and I thought it was GREAT!!! I was a outside person but these books kept me holding on and wanting more. I wanted a sequal to the whole series, just because I wanted to know everything else about Alanna. She was inspiring and she made a geat adventure. I wanted her to end up with the prince sense they had been through so much together but to see how she let him go on and live his life but still they felt a need to be with each other was a glori...more
I read these books so many times through the years since I was in middle school, and I still enjoy them! I think it is an amazing series for girls to read since it involves a strong girl who proves she is just as good as the boys (and then a woman just as good as a man) when she decides to switch places with her brother so she can be a knight, something her brother never wanted. She proves how strong she is through out her years of learning and then exploring the world and finds out who she is a...more
All little kids even remotely interested in fantasy stuff should read these and see how cool a female hero can be--and I know the proper word is "heroine", but it doesn't necessarily sound as capable as "hero". I don't know of any other fantasy kids' series where The Protagonist is a girl. (Not talking about teen vampire series here.) I know HP has Hermione, but she's still a supporting character, definitely not as important as H.

These were my all time favorite books when I was in middle school. It just goes to show how awesome of a writer Tamora Pierce is that her books still touch the lives of readers many many years after their initial publication. The story of Alanna was hugely inspiring to be as a child. It was great to have a role model to look up to, who could be anything she wanted to be, in spite of all the opposition she faced. The condition of my books is acceptable because they are all literally falling apart...more
I first heard about the series while I was leisurely scanning through some amazing drawings in Deviantart, and I found a beautiful drawing of King Jonathan and his Champion, Alanna of Trebond. Intrigued, I clicked the artist and scanned through some of her drawings, which was mainly composed of Tamora Pierce characters. Fueled by both my admiration for the art and curiosity for the series, I then googled about The Song of the Lioness, and I found out how it was about a girl who dressed up like a...more
For whatever reason, I picked this one up for the umpteenth time last night. It's a series of four that I've read over and over and over and over and over again since... junior high maybe? I still remember the first time I ever laid eyes on it. I was at the library just browsing, picked up the first one (which *coughs* I have on my bookshelf... shh... don't tell the library lol) and it sucked me in from the first sentence. I think if someone asked what my favorite book(s) were... I might just ha...more
I first read this series decades ago, and it has become like an old friend. I read it semi-annually and always enjoy it.
It recounts the struggles of Alanna of Trebond, who in her quest to become a knight, disguises herself as a boy to train. She faces numerous challenges, but makes staunch allies along the way.
These are simple, straightforward fantasy novels. Classic sword and sorcery, but one where the damsel is doing the rescuing. The characters are strong, likeable and real. These really have...more

One day, while working at my middle school library, I stumbled across the first of this series. The fact that the girl/boy on the cover had a purple glow around her fascinated me, so I picked it up, judged it by it's cover (I was still doing that back then) and started reading.
Then I picked up books 2-4 and took them all home the next day. And zoomed through them! I couldn't believe it... this was the most amazing series I had ever read! Knights, and disguises, and coming of age, and magic and...more

If I had read these books when I was the right age, they would probably have gotten 4 or 5 stars, but I'm a little too old for them now.
These are 4 novels about Alanna of Trebond, a girl who wants to be a knight. Unfortunately, the last female knight in her country lived 100 years ago and her preoccupied father has decreed that she will be fostered out to learn to be a lady. Alanna's twin brother, Thom, forges a couple of letters and Alanna takes his place in the school for knights and Thom happ...more

These are some of my favorite books by Tamora Pierce. I really like the world she creates- and so many tangent books. The writing is relatively clean- PG to PG-13. The story is about a girl that doesn't want to follow the path of her birth and gender to become a 'lady at court' so she trades places with her twin and gives knighthood a go. Many of Pierce's books revolve around this girl and her children or friends. A very enjoyable story- one that I own (meaning I'll read them more than once).
I loved these books when I found them on the shelf of my public library at the age of ten or so. It wasn't just the adventure, or the magic, or the genderbending heroine, or even the sex (!) although each of those were important reasons I re-read them yearly for many years. I identified with their portrayal of outsiderness, and I have always wanted to thank Pierce for writing something that could make it into a small-town library and bring such radical storytelling there.
I remember buying this series. I'd been obsessed with young adult books then (actually I still am) and I thought the series looked interesting enough. After I finished reading it, I was completely hooked. I wanted more. This was also what caused me to attempt to read the Circle of Magic series which I already had in my position but never really understood. This was the book that caused me to think 'That was so good, I'm going to read it again.'
Tamora Pierce is one of my favorite Young Adult authors. She always has very strong female characters, even when they're not the lead. The Song of the Lioness Quartet follow Alanna in the Tortall world. She wants to be a knight, but she's a girl, so she trades places with her brother (he goes off to study magic and she goes off to become a knight). She has many adventures and is accompanied by a black cat. I highly recommend any of her series.
Goodness, I think it was about ten years ago when I convinced my father to buy me this quartet. I must have only been eleven years old. I started reading the first book after I went to bed that night, I put down the last book around 4AM in the morning. This was the first series that kept me up all night. The second book is still one of my all time favorites.I always convince young friends that they HAVE to read this series.

Hey, folks! I just discovered that apparently I have given some very popular books single-star ratings--except I haven't. How do I know I haven't? Because I haven't read those books at all. So before you go getting all hacked off at me for trashing your favorites, know that I've written GoodReads to find out what's going on.
