I just finished re-reading the whole series. What I love about Tamora Pierce's books is that she creates different worlds within the greater cosmos/magical structure, based on countries in our world. Each of the books in this series revolves around one of the characters from her earlier Circle of Magic books finding an ambient mage to train, whilst trying to solve a different murder mystery. Half murder mystery, half-fantasy, and well integrated between the two. I will admit that they get a ...more

Sandry, from the Circle of Magic books, is out of school and caring for her uncle, the Duke, who is recovering from a heart attack.
One day, 2 important things happen: a crooked businessman is murdered, with no clues of who murdered him, and Sandry discovers a boy, named Pasco, who expresses his magic through dance.
When it is discovered that the murderers are using an illegal form of 'unmagic' and that more murders are going to take place, Sandry wishes that she can devote all her time ...more

The book was alright, but not the usual engaging story and interesting characters from Pierce. I actually felt most of her characters were pretty flat in this book. I don't think i will read more of the series.

This is the first Tamora Pierce book I read and, honestly, the first book I've read in ages. I loved this book because it held my attention and kept me reading. I had picked up a number of adult books before this and couldn't make it through. I loved the villians in this book and the magic of nothingness. It was brilliant. I didn't like the limitations of the mage's powers and the book was slow to pick up. It wasn't my favorite in the series, but it did lead me to an interesting writer and a won...more

eh... not impressed. Sandry has the potential to be interesting but somehow her story (in both quartets)is really unsatisfying. Also, her apprentice, Pasco, is a whiner.
I'm bummed that we don't see more of Vedris and Yasmin in Will of the Empress though. That was probably the most interesting bit of the story and I felt like I was left hanging.

have consistently enjoyed her books, which I am sharing with my younger sister. I started this one as a reprieve from the heaviness of Walking It Off. She tends to write coming-of-age stories about young girls, an easy theme for me to get into anyway, but the stories are relatively strong on their own. Pretty traditional YA Fantasy.
