Ten, Nine, Eight is a good book to read to children who are in the early childhood age group.this book is a counting book and is counting backwards from ten to one. the author, Molly Bang based this book on a father and a daughter. The father is counting down all the things the daughter has to do/does before she goes to bed.

What I liked about this book is, it is very relatable for children. Just about every child can relate to having specific things before they go to bed. in the book, the little...more

My first impression of the book is that the illustration are a little outdated, but that will happen when the book is written in 1983. Taking that into consideration the illustrations are alright, nothing spectacular, but they follow along with the story enough.

The story is about a little girl and her getting ready for bed routine, her and her count through the different items in her room and on her person. You start with ten toes, 9 friends, 8 window panes, 7 shoes, 6 seashells, 5 buttons, 4 s...more

Genre: Children’s Picture Book: Counting
Summary: This book demonstrates a count-down from ten to one as a father prepares his daughter for bedtime. Together they count various items found in the young girl’s bedroom.
a) This book has a very warm tone.
b) Although this book is a counting book, it seems to convey more than just numbers. The special bond between a father and daughter seems to be as much about the book as the numbers.
c) As the book goes through the progression of the countdown, it als...more

2. Summary: A father is putting his young child in bed, using a lullaby of counting items in the room from ten to one.

3. a) The greatest strength of this book is the ability to relate to the story and the items used to count down.

b) I think parents and children can relate to this lullaby of bedtime. The strength of this book is the way the author uses objects in the room that the child can see. Other counting books go from one room to the next, but this book foc...more

This book, is about an African American little girl, and her father is getting her ready for bed. As the book goes on, things are observed in her room that appear in numbers. As the book starts from 10 is counts down to one.

I think that this book is good for children who are learning to count becuse it includes things that would really interst every little kid. For example, "10 small toes all washed and warm," little kids are able to look down at their own toes and know that they have 10 of them...more

Where’s the Math: This is a counting book, but all the items being counted backwards from 10-1 are related to a young African American girl who is going to bed. So, we begin with “10 small toes all washed and warm” and end with “1 big girl all ready for bed”, and in between we see 9 stuffed animal friends in her room, her 8 window panes with snow falling outside, 7 of her shoes, a mobile made of 6 shells, 5 buttons on her nightgown, 4 sleepy eyes...more

Title: Ten, Nine, Eight
Author: Molly Bang
Genre: Counting

Summary: A counting bedtime story

A. A critique of the illustrations used in this story

B. The illustrations in this story reflect very well the theme of a count-down when putting a little girl to sleep. The illustrations show the setting, but none of illustrations show anyone talking, running, or making any type of noise. This adds a sense of quietness and calm in the story that reflects the theme of preparing for bedtime. Also, by placing t...more

3. A. Text/ Illustrations
B. Eyes focus on the text to the left because other than text, the left page of each spread contains only white space. According to Kathleen T. a. One of the greatest strengths of this book is the use of adjectives by the author.

Summary: This concept book is a countdown to bedtime using the things in a child’s real world.

Critique: A. I like the way this book uses a theme of order to let help the child feel at ease so that she can sleep.

Genre: Counting Children’s Book
Summary:This is a counting book that describes a room and a little girl going to sleep.
Critique: a) Illustrations and story that coincides.
The illustrations in this book have a warm feel, even with the bright colors. The drawings are softly drawn without harsh lines. The pictures are colorful, which usually makes a book seem more alive and have a loud aspect to it, but they make the colors seem happy and comfortable. The words also choose comforting items to talk...more

Molly Bang uses an interesting way to help children how to count back from ten. The illustrations were soft instead of sharp which I think draws more attention to what the children are supposed to be counting. The colors Bang uses are vivid and appealing to a child’s eye and she uses objects that children are familiar with. During the book she has the left side strictly for the text and the right side strictly for picture. This helps the...more

Ten, Nine, Eight by Molly Bang is a picture book. It is a Caldecott honor book of 1984. The age group this book is intended for is nursery. The book is a countdown to bedtime.
I thought this was a good bedtime story and I like that each time you look at the pictures there is more to find. If the child is a little older, he/she can count the number of items on each page, some more difficult to spot than others. The good thing is the numbers go down so as you are trying to get them to sleep they do...more

2. Summary: A dad makes a game out of getting ready for bed by counting from ten to one.

3. Critique:
a. Area for comment: The rhyming text and theme of good bedtime habits makes this a great book.

1. This book would fall under the category of a picture book, counting.
2. Counting backward is made fun with this cute bedtime book. A little girl is snuggling with her father while she ponders items in her room.
3. critique
a. This book has great illustrations.
b. As a Caldecott Honor book, the expectation is there for amazing illustrations. This book fits the expectations and depicts the numbers successively from 10 to 1. It is unique in the concept of counting backward instead of forward gi...more

Genre: I placed this title in my reading log under Counting Picture Books.

Summary: A young girl and her father share time together before bed. They are counting backwards from 10 to 1 of various things in the girls’ room.

Critique:

(a.) In my opinion, the greatest strength presented in this title was the author’s capability to show the strong love a father has for has daughter.

(b.) Starting with the inside cover, you see a father smiling as he holds out his arms for his little girl.

2. This is an adorable story about a child counting down to sleep. While counting down, the child counts items easily seen within her room.

3. A. Area for comment: Content

B. The content within this counting book includes the child's toes, toys, and other items found within her room. Not only was I able to relate, but I know that young children would too.

C. Examples of content:
"7 empty shoes in a short straight row" (Bang, 7).

"5 round buttons on a yellow night gown" (Bang, 11).

A minimalist story ideal for bedtime, as illustrated through the pictures of a little girl’s bedroom at nighttime, Ten, Nine, Eight makes great use of numbers as a way to ease a child into relaxation. The rhythm and rhyme pattern of the short phrases used on each page are probably at their best when read aloud in a slow, calming voice to match the serene lullaby feel to the story. The pictures match up well with the words they are paired to, and the relationship between the African-American fat...more

In Ten, Nine, Eight familiar objects are counted down from ten to one as a little girl gets ready for bed. Each number is large and recognizable and focuses around counting certain objects in the same room such as the little girl’s stuffed animals (and a real cat), and the round buttons on her yellow nightgown. Babies will be introduced to numbers and object identification, while toddlers are introduced to the more advanced concept of counting down. The book is colorfully illustrated in both bri...more

Ten, Nine, Eight is a very simple counting book, which as one might imply, starts at ten and makes its way down to one. The book is about a young girl and the things she does and her surroundings as she gets ready and goes to bed. The language Molly Bang uses is very soft and poetic that flows nicely. An example of this, although there were more, is the last two pages that ends with the girl going to bed: "2 strong arms around a fuzzy bear's head; 1 big girl all ready for bed." The illustrations...more

1984 Caldecott Honor

This is a book featuring various things around a little girl as she gets ready for bed with her Daddy and counts them down from ten to one (9 soft friends in a quiet room, 4 sleepy eyes which open and close, etc.) The illustrations are bright and compelling--each scene not only shows what is being counted, but there are additional things for the reader to look at, such as a black cat that is looking out the window in one scene and is later shown playing with a shoe (probably...more

I chose this book because it was a Caldecott Honor winner. It is a counting book. It starts off with a little girl sitting on her dad's lap. It starts counting down from 10. It counts down with things in the bedroom and ends with the little girl going to bed. I don't want to ruin the story for you, so I won't tell you what one is. The pictures were outstanding for a book from the 80's. It is hardcover and the paper quality is very withstanding. I would use this book as a great read aloud for pre...more

Ten, Nine, Eight by Molly bang is a quiet and calm story with bright illustrations that catch your eye. The first thing I noticed when I looked at the book was the African American little girl getting ready for bed. The large white space on the left side of the spread combined with the brightly, colored illustrations on the right side creates a nice contrast. The text seemed to appear on the left with illustrations on the right side. This book has a great mix of colors but at the same time it’s...more

This would be the perfect bedtime book for young children who are learning to count. This is the story of a little girl who is not so little anymore, she may even be considered a "big" little girl. The little girl and her dad countdown until bed time, examples include ten toes on her feet, nine fuzzy friends, and so on. The story and love that the girl and father share is comforting....more
