Pity poor Medea--at least, that's what German novelist Christa Wolf would like you to do. True, the woman's reputation is not good: she stan... read full description

Inhalt:

Since I'm working on a book that is partly set in ancient Greece, I love to read other books that are set there to help me soak up the atmosphere. I was so disappointed with the storytelling of this book that I couldn't even use it as a research tool. I gave up seventy pages in because I couldn't keep track of who was who or what the plot was beyond a few generalities. I really wanted to like this retelling of the Medea's story (basically it's a slice of the Jason and the Argonauts story). I eve More...

This was really disappointing. I was so impressed with Cassandra and had such high hopes for Medea, but I came away just thinking, eh. There is so much potential in this story, and it's infinitely more complicated (and interesting) to make Medea a sympathetic figure than it was Cassandra whose story is inherently easier to sympathize with. But I just kept thinking, I understand what she is trying to do and how she is trying to do it, and if I could I would will myself into feeling the way she wa More...

This is a really interesting take on the myth of Medea. Christa Wolfe is a very interesting writer and she approaches the figure of Medea with a lot of compassion. While reading it I began to feel like this was the true story of Medea, and that all the other myths I've read were made up. I would recommend this book, but would also advise that you at least review what the myth of Medea is all about in order to appreciate where this book comes from.

I always kind of felt for Medea. Yes, I know, she killed her kids and all that, but damn it, she gave up everything for that cheating bastard, Jason. This is great--it's more politics than passion, and Medea is not just an independent woman, she's an independent woman who knows more than Creon wants her to know. The resulting story is very compelling.

Deals with many of the same themes as Kassandra but is ultimately a less satisfying read. While I can understand the appeal of turning Medea into a heroine, it does take some drama out of the original story to completely exonerate her of all crimes.

Sfida internazionale

Interesting take on the old Greek play. I like retellings, particularly from unconventional viewpoints.
