Doctor Who: The Stone Rose (New Series Adventures #7)
Mickey is startled to find a statue of Rose in a museum - a statue that is 2,000 years old. The Doctor realizes that this means the TARDIS will shortly take them to Ancient Rome, but when it does, he and Rose soon have more on their minds than sculpture. While the Doctor searches for a missing boy, Rose befriends a girl who claims to know the future. But then the Doctor st...more

I listened to the audio book and flailed around in my car for most of it. David Tennant is an astoundingly good reader, and there's something delightful about how pitch-perfect his character voices are (and how fun to have him actually sound like the Doctor.) Packed with Doctor-and-Rose moments, and with a fun plot twist and lots of close brushes with time paradoxes that make up for the seemingly interminable and gruesome time the Doctor spends in the Flavian Amphitheater.
My first Tenth Doctor novel, recommended to me by LJ user eveshka, started off a bit slow--but picked up considerably in the second half. It also had the distinction of being the first Doctor story I can remember encountering that's set in actively ancient Earth history, which was a refreshing change of pace. Yet despite the historical setting, there's a nice twining in of futuristic technology as well, and I liked that the scope of this story was more of a "solving a time mystery" rat...more
The Stone Rose is my second Doctor Who read by Jacqueline Rayner (following Winner Takes All featuring the ninth Doctor). Rayner takes the Doctor (as played by David Tennant) and Rose (Billie Piper) to ancient Rome following Mickey’s discovery that a statue of the goddess Fortuna, modeled after Rose, is on display in the British Museum. When the two arrive in Rome, they discover that a nobleman’s son has disappeared after modeling for an unlikely sculptor who’s all the rage for the lifelike qual...more
Timey-wimey, wibbley-wobbley sort of thing.

I liked this one better than "The Price of Paradise" by a long shot. Fun in Ancient Rome, good Dr./Rose banter. Several moments made me laugh out loud-- always a good sign in a light-reading book. The explanation of how everything happened was a bit mind-boggling in the end, but it kind of worked. Fun explanation of how a lot of mythology and folklore got started.

Recommends it for:
Dr Who fans, Doctor/Rose shippers, lovers of Scottish accents
Basically, a typical adventure with perhaps a bit too much cliche. When the Doctor and Rose goes to Ancient Rome, something happens to Rose and the Doctor is alone. Once Rose is back, the Doctor is missing and once they are both back, the world is in danger. You know the deal. There are a lot of Doctor/Rose moments in this one.
On the other hand, listening to David Tennant can be very enjoyable, especially if you are fond of his Scottish accent. Not to mention, he surely knows how to...more

A fun Ten/Rose adventure in Ancient Rome! Must admit I had the same reaction as Rose when the whole statue mystery was solved. I listened to the audio book and really, I could listen to Tennant's Scottish accent all day.
I don't think it's one of the best new DW books (that goes to Winner Takes All, I reckon) but it's fun, and there's lots of cute Doctor/Rose stuff. It's a bit all over the place, too, but like I said: FUN. CUTE. Doctor/Rose. :D
This was a quick read. It was so-so as far as Doctor Who fanfiction goes. The BBC produces these so they aren't the same caliber as the Big Finish Audio Plays but they are still good quick reads. I liked this story well enough. It's starts out well and I like that Micky is included in this Tardis tale. I really like seeing the Doctor's companions flourish on their own. I hate it when they are waiting for the Doctor to save them. Who needs that? This dragged a bit in the middle and ended well eno...more
Fun 3/4's of a book. Kind of gets convoluted at the end and doesn't hold together too well. Though there is a cute epilogue.
Enjoyed the scenes in ancient Rome.

The story is really sweet and feels like it's aimed at a younger audience than the show. But I listened to the audiobook with David Tennant narrating and his energetic performance eclipses the flaws. He does amazing vocal impressions of Rose, Jackie and Mickey and creates different voices for other characters. Of course you're hearing the man himself deliver the Doctor's dialogue, and in between all that you have Tennant's gorgeous natural Scottish accent. There are some great scenes that I h...more
As an all time Doctor Who fan I decided to read one of the books. This was the first one I picked up and I got cracking right away. The plot is very adventurous, just like the actual Doctor Who series. I liked this book quite a lot.

Another Doctor Who novel coming at you! Hey, I received a whole mess of them at one time :)
This one is set up by the Doctor, Mickey, Rose and her Mum all going to the British musuem and seeing an exact stone replica of Rose. It appears to be from Ancient Rome....so off the Doctor and Rose go in the Tardis. The characters are interesting and the setting of Ancient Rome very cool. However, found the "explanation" behind the Rose statue a little weak and sentimental.

It's definitely the "shippiest" of all the Ten/Rose DW books. I really liked it.
Who cares about the plot? Doctor/Rose banter!
A fun, little book about everyone's favorite Time Lord.
Not as well written as an episode of Doctor Who, but still filled with the usual time traveling misadventures. A few of the adventures were a little hard to picture David Tennant actually performing, but whatever.
If you want to be nick picky you could argue that a few aspects of the book weren't true to the show--like what a sonic screwdriver is capable of, where is the psychic paper?, the Doctor has never been good ...more

http://nhw.livejournal.com/1085704.htm[return][return]This is the most owned Doctor Who book on LibraryThing, for some reason; I guess it was the first Tenth Doctor book to come out. Team Tardis (Doctor and Rose, with Mickey and Jackie visible too) find a statue of Rose dating from Roman times in the British Museum. Solving the mystery takes a certain amount of timewarping, mostly during the reign of Hadrian, and dealing with an advanced technology indistinguishable from magic. The characterisat...more

When you find that the only enjoyment you are getting from a book is the thought of reviewing it on Goodreads, it is a bad sign.
This is a Doctor Who book. Now, if I were an author, before writing a book in a television series that has had 737 episodes, I would attempt to watch at least one. Clearly, I am not Jaqueline Rayner, the author. Ahem, the Doctor is not just a dude with a time machine! And, before having your characters talk about the "laws of time", it would be...more

I <3 the Doctor Who books that are read by David Tennant. He does such a good job but this also happens to be a compelling story. The book begins with Mickey showing Rose, the Doctor, and Jackie the two thousand year old statue of Rose that he’s discovered in a museum. This discovery sets the Doctor and Rose on a trip to Ancient Rome to unravel the mystery of how this statue was made in the first place. But no Doctor Who adventure is complete without mystery, danger, close calls, and a little...more
Nice story, some plot points I've figured out before they were explained but it worked really nice with all the twist and turns time travel sometimes involves.
Hearing David Tennant read was great fun, he did a good job in trying to capture the voices of the characters we already know (Rose, Mickey, Jackie) and giving voices to new characters (especially the G.E.N.I.E.). But the most fun was when he actually read the Doctor. :)

If you can't tell, I miss Doctor Who. I love these adventures that seem like they could have been episodes. This has been my favorite so far, because of all the Doctor/Rose moments. They are so amazing together I want to squish them. It also had a crazy, time-twisting plot and featured some of that tenderness that appears in many episodes, in contrast with the ever inventive but ever evil aliens of Whoverse.
This book was a good read except for the fact that i listened to it in Audio Book form. It has a good structure and the going backward and forward in time is hard to keep up with but not so hard that you got lost. It involves Rose, a bit of Mickey and just a tad of Jackie. It was very fulfilling once we got to the end and has a good interpretation of what life was like in Rome. I strongly recommend it.
Although a lot of the Doctor Who books lack in my opinion, this one kept me turning pages. Granted I haven't read any of the ones with Martha and only a few with Donna. Certainly none of 11's books. (How silly that even after Mr. Tennant left it was still ok because there were still some of the old books at B&N with his face on it. Now there are none. Just 11. And it is wrong I tell you! :) )
The book did start out a bit slow, but even those parts were pleasingly described and interesting to a Doctor Who fangirl like myself. It quickly picked up the pace in the second half, however, and the plot twists and turns were amazingly fun- just what you would expect from a Doctor Who story. I loved how they solved the time mystery in the end, and a trip to ancient Rome wasn't bad either.

Docter Who is a science fiction show and its one of my favorite. Now after seeing the shows I want to read the books.
the guy on the cover is the real actor in the show. His name is David Tennent and the girl is Rose Tyler the Doctors assistent. The actors name for her is Billei Pipper.
Im really looking forward to reading this book. Im a big fan of Doctor who.

Great book, this is what Doctor Who fans want in there novels. The Doctor hits the time travel trifecta, past, present and future. If you are wondering what the Doctor is all about and dont have time to catch a few episodes of the show this is a great book to pick up. Its a quick read and a rewarding one. I also recommend the audiobook which is read by David Tennant who played the Tenth incarnation of the Doctor.
I listened to the audio book and had this happy grin on my face most of the time. David Tennant is a great reader and it's a real fun to have him actually sound like the Doctor :P I could listen to his Scottish accent all day...
Plus a fun Rose/Ten adventure (with an interesting story behind and some sweet Rose/Ten moments) in Ancient Rome.

“Ursus stepped forward. 'Watch your tongue when you speak to the goddess!' he snarled.
The Doctor frowned. 'I think that would make speaking rather difficult,' he said.He stuck his tongue out and crossed his eyes to look down on it. 'Therterly inghockigal.' he said.”

“He saw the statue - she shrank back as he hurried forward. And then he realized it wasn't her. Rose was taken aback. She hadn't known - how could she know - what her disappearence had done to him. This Doctor had a look of such despair in his eyes that her heart almost stopped in pity. She wanted more than anything else to go to him, tell him that everything was going to be alright. But... what with possibly ripping time and space apart, that was probably a bad idea. ”
