Denise Fleming has a very intriguing way of portraying her work through her images, which is exactly what she does with her book Alphabet Under Construction. Although this book has very little text, she makes sure her pictures tell her story for her. She used very vivid images to keep young and beginning readers interested. These images are very bright and colorful to keep the reader fascinated. The images in her book are not the ordinary images used by most authors. Fleming has her one sense of...more

A mouse, who is hard at work building the alphabet, creatively uses the letter he's assembling or constructing to determine the way he will put it together.

The use of alliteration is impressive. I wouldn't have thought there would have been corresponding verb for each letter of the alphabet, but sure enough there it! While they feel a little dated, the illustrations are colorful and do a great job of exhibiting how each verb affects the letter...more

Alphabet Under Construction by Denise Fleming is a neat ABC book that I believe children would truly enjoy. It is a book to help students review or learn the alphabet, and it is constructed in such a creative way. The cover of the book illustrates a mouse caring a tool box filled with endless supplies. The cover is so relevant to the remainder of the book as the mouse uses the supplies to create each letter of the alphabet. Each page has its own letter. The illustrations are large and filled wit...more

Alphabet Under Construction by Denise Fleming shows a little mouse constructing the alphabet.

Mouse constructs each letter of the alphabet. His efforts include airbrushing, carving, dyeing, folding, kinking, nailing, pruning, quilting, sawing, tiling, welding, and zipping.

The short, clever text mainly uses three words per page. A large font is used with each letter of the alphabet in a larger, bolder font. Interesting vocabulary choices featuring verbs make this book challenging and fun.

Building an alphabet is hard work, but one little mouse does it with panache in this peppy picture book (which includes a free poster) by the author of Lunch and Barnyard Banter.
From A to Z, Mouse jovially puts some muscle behind his artful creations after demarcating his workspace with yellow construction tape. Readers get to watch him airbrush an A, level the L, and measure the M, but Mouse's letters go beyond hammers and nails as he prunes a l...more

Alphabet Under Construction by Denise Fleming is a fun alternative to the "A is for Apple" alphabet book. A little mouse constructs each letter of the alphabet. "Mouse airbrushes the A, buttons the B, carves the C..." and so on. I like that each letter is represented by an action verb rather than a noun. Some of the verbs, though, may be a bit tough for a preschool age child to understand. Each illustration really focuses on the letter being showcased, but I find the color palette to be drab mak...more

Mouse constructions his way through an alliterative alphabet.

Decent alphabet book. The construction theme is fun and provides a break from your standard ABC lists. I read it to preschool and it went OK; they needed half the words defined which is a few too many for it to be much fun. Kindergarten might work better but by then I'd rather pull out Bad Kitty or Poor Puppy.

Active, accessible, and gaily colored depictions of the letters of the alphabet are humorously brought to life by Fleming’s energetic mouse, who airbrushes a vibrant red and orange letter A, carves an orange C, dyes a rainbow colored D, and tiles the letter T. Young children will enjoy interacting with this alphabet beautifully rendered with vividly stenciled illustrations.

Horn Book: Martha Stewart, move over. Fleming’s exuberant Mouse takes on the alphabet- from airbrushing A to zippering Z- w...more

This was one adorable ABC book. It followed Mouse while he assembles and constructs all the letters of the alphabet. He kinks the K, prunes the P, and so forth. The illustrations are amazing as well.

I would use this book for an art project. I would have each student construct their own letter. I would provide an array of materials or they could bring some from home. The students would get to choose the letter they would construct as well but will have to use an verb that corresponds with the let...more

I adore Denise Fleming's books--especially this one. Great way to promote ABC crafts into your preschool or early childhood classroom using this book. 'Mouse airbrushes the A, buttons the B, carves the C...' Who wouldn't love to do the alphabet all month long using this book?!
Samuel Joyce
I found this book really adorable. I feel as if a mouse interests both a boy and a girl's perspective. It doesn't favor a gender which is always key when teaching a lesson. It tells a story of how a mouse builds the alphabet which is a unique way to teach the letters in order.

An Alphabet book in which a little mouse constructs each letter of the alphabet by performing an activity beginning with that letter. For example he finished the letter P by pruning it and the letter Q by quilting it.At the end of the book the mouse laid next to a calendar listing all the work and fun things he did during the month.
Rachel
Vibrant colored ABC book where a lone mouse creates an alphabet. The artist/author, according the blurb on the above box, "employs an arcane process that involves "pouring colored cotton pulp through hand-cut stencils" to create her distinctive style." Recommended for ages 3-7.

There are so many "abc" books but many use commercialized characters or rely heavily on nouns to emphasize the initial letter. I loved the creative use of verbs for a change and the art is still cool for boys that often need more interest to keep them reading.

This book is super cute! It's a great book to read to children who are learning about the alphabet! It help associate words with the beginning letter as well! The illustrations are very creative and helps the student understand what that word means!
Heather
My daughter loves this. She requests it all the time. And I love it too. A great alphabet book with words like "airbrushing" for A and "carving" for C. It's crafty alphabet! And since I've been in a make-things-with-my-own-hands high, I liked this.
Kelci Cox-Griswold
This book would be great for younger kids who are learning their alphabet and the sounds that each letter makes. It would also be good to teach verbs because there is a verb for each letter.
Deborah
Mouse from other books by Fleming uses different materials to construct the letters of the alphabet. Introduces new vocabulary to the young reader.

Ages 2-5

This little mouse is very industrious! Both classes enjoyed this one as asked for it multiple times. It's a leave it on the shelf all year book!

This book is about a mouse who constructs the alphabet.
I would use this book in my classroom to discuss letter recognition and letter sounds.

A very creative way to help children recognize the different letters in the alphabet. I wish the illustrations were a little brighter.

A fun alphabet book about a busy mouse and his A to Z construction projects on alphabet letters. This one was a hit with the kiddos.
Molly
Pretty fun, but doesn't stand out to me as great. Might be cool for learning different ways to build or create things.

ages 2-3. This is a very basic alphabet book. It includes both upper and lowercase letters and will help with letter knowledge.
Nicol
One of Livy's favorites! We have read this so many times, that our poor book is missing letters K through N!
Tamara
Great ABC book with good verb vocab words like "kinks", "prunes".

three words per page for each letter
Courtney
This charming book offers a lot of hidden suprises to kids learning the ins and out of their ABC's.

This book is great because I now have my own tool kits to help me read this book with my Daddy.
JoAnna
This alphabet book is colorful and beautiful! A mouse introduces the alphabet letters by airbrushing the A, buttoning the B, and carving the C. Mouse constructs all the letters. This book makes it fun for your readers to learn their ABC's. One way I would use this in my classroom is to read it one page a week, while working on writing that letter and coming up with words that start with that specific letter. Another way would be by reading the book after going through the whole alphabet, and ask...more
