Alex Delaware is back in Jonathan Kellerman's newest novel, Compulsion. He and Milo are hot on the case again. This time they are trying to solve a mystery that starts with a stolen Bentley...a stolen Bentley with blood on the seat. However, there is no body and no suspects. Their detecting starts to uncover strange clues that take Alex all the way to New York City.
That's the main storyline of the plot. However, for some reason, Kellerman includes two very minor subplots. First, there is a ...more

As always, Dr, Alex Delaware and novelist Jonathan Kellerman are in fine form. Alex is back with Robin, and his trusty friend/confidante Milo is by his side to unravel the newest mystery of a series of bizarre murders in LA.

So glad to see a return to the strong Alex Delaware books of yore after being disappointed in the last few entries in this series. Readers can expect psychological thrills, violence, mayhem, and some serious sleuthing by Delaware, Milo, and friends as they track an apparent homicidal "do-gooder" who takes it upon himself (herself?) to rid the world of those he (she?) deems unworthy of life.

A perfectly OK addition to the Alex 'n' Milo series, but here's what puzzles me: the picture of the cover on this page is NOT the same as the cover of the book I bought. When I bought it, I was really excited because MY cover depicts a shadowy figure lurking next to the Manhattan Beach pier, underneath which I spent many happy childhood hours and on top of which I spent many unhappy teenhood hours contemplating throwing myself into the Pacific. But! There is not one single mention of the MB ...more

It has been a while since I have read or listened to a Jonathan Kellerman book. His regular charachers have become pretty predictable and this story dragged a bit - at least on CD. If you don't have a "history" with Alex Delaware and Milo Sturgis, the 2 main characters, and also with his lesser regulars, some of the subtleties are easy to miss. This book doesn't give you much background development of the characters - there seems to be an assumption that you have read some of the earli...more

I liked this book quite a bit. I love this narrator and I enjoyed this book being a bit shorter than some of the others in the series (8 cds compared to a normal 10-11). I thought the length was much more appropriate and it didn't seem to drag as much. I also really was surprised by who the "bad guy" was in this one.
That said, I think I would have rated this a four except for I listened to this super close to another Kellerman book. I guess I hadn't noticed when I had read them sp...more

If you like Kellerman's other books, you will probably like this one. I actually liked it more than some of the other ones. Sometimes, I find Alex Delaware's psychological insights a little too obscure and feel they muddy the picture. This time, he was a little more reigned in, and I found this book to be much more readable as a result. It still contains all of the elements we love--Milo, Robin, and Alex's cute new dog. The only drawback was that the two mysteries in this book got tied up a litt...more

I love Dr. Delaware, and I'm glad he's back with Robin the Mandolin Maker, but I think Dr. Kellerman might have phoned this one in just a little bit. It's still worth reading because it's Alex Delaware (well and Milo) but this one was not the most stellar. If you are reading this, Dr. Kellerman, I'm sorry. I feel like a traitor for dissing your book with only three stars. It's just that I have higher standards for you, sir, than for some of your colleagues...now turn off the internet and get...more

It definitely kept me reading and was one of the better in the Alex Delaware series, BUT it was not the best. I am glad to see Alex and Robin back together but she was barely even in it compared to the constant interaction between she and Alex in prior books. She also came off as paranoid and skittish with her new client which struck me as off from prior books as well..... I thought the build up was great but that the ending was pretty rushed and anti-climactic, especially the resolution to t...more

I'm not fully up to date on all the latest Jonathan Kellerman novels, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that reading them out of order doesn't really matter after all. Once again, we have an intricate plot line with no obvious solutions or directions screaming at the reader to distract from a riveting read. And every last red herring gets wrapped up, right down to the very last page. Now I can't wait to go back to the ones I've missed and find out how he got back together with Robin!

Sometimes hard to follow. There were instances where the editing was not as careful as it should be. A radio is turned off at the beginning of a conversation and again turned off with no evidence that it was turned on. (I looked for it.) This shouldn't bug me, but it upsets the rhythm for me. There was some extraneous stuff in there: Robin's "scary" new commission - NOT.
All in all, basic Alex Delaware novel, a good read, but not great.

while i like kellerman and the relationship between milo and alex, this wasn't one of my favorites. the end was a little too neat and tidy. there were really 3 separate stories going on, and the main one was just kind of odd and a bit predictable. the other two were less so, and there was , at least, one surprise at the end, so it wasn't a wash. as always, very readable and enjoyable wit and conversation among the main characters.

I liked this book a lot. The dialogue between Milo and Alex was very snappy and quick. Kellerman is really doing a great job at developing the relationship between them even more than in the other books.
I also like the fact that Robin is back in Alex's life. They really do seem to do well together and they even have a new dog.
There were a couple of things that bothered me, but overall it was a very good read.

Loved it! Finished it when I got home on the 9th, even though all I wanted to do was sleep. I just couldn't wait to find out how it ended.

Its great so far, and I've only got about 80 or 100 pages to go. I started it at about midnight last night (this morning?) and had to force myself to put it down at 2:30am. If I ever get to leave work today I intend to finish this ASAP.

The latest Alex Delaware novel has Alex and Milo hunting a killer who seems to have a flair for changing his appearance and identity. It's pretty standard fare for the series and a good read if you're a Kellerman fan. A minor character, Tasha, was a great addition to the story and would have fit right into a Janet Evanovitch book as well -- a definite bright spot in a book about some very dark crimes.

I would give this 3.5 stars if that was an option. Kellerman books are generally not high quality literary gems, but if you want an entertaining book that you can finish in two days, he's your guy. This one had an interesting transvestite character thing going on, and another random plotline that seemed to be thrown in there as filler. The ending was mega-cheezy.

Any Kellerman is well worth reading and this one lived up to all expectations! Delaware and Sturgis are looking for a possible serial killer (they aren't sure the crimes are linked) in a cast of characters that is both diverse and colorful. Great plotting, character development, and quirkiness. A perfect summer read!

Alex Delaware and Milo Sturgis get involved in a serious of bizarre deaths that seem unrelated but after traveling to the East Coast chasing after an illusive suspect, the true horrors of the crimes become apparent. Really bizarre, but great story as usual for Jonathan Kellerman.

A drunk girl disappears. An old woman is butchered by an old man. A Bentley is stolen & then recovered with a single bloodstain. These are the events sending psychologist, Alex Delaware , off onto his latest sleuthing episode. This series is always offers an entertaining read.

This was a standard Delaware/Sturgis book. It was similar to all the others, maybe a little better. They kind of run together, but for me his books are so easy to read I just get caught up right away. Milo is still ticking like a time bomb. Kirsten is rading it now. Cline
