Bolden presents us with history of black American artists, beginning with former slave and portraitist Joshua Johnson, and continuing through the 1990’s. Weaving historical context throughout her descriptions, Wake Up Our Souls reads more of a narrative than a compilation of artist biographies. Some artists, like Johnson and painter Hale Woodruff, have several pages devoted to their life and works while others have only a few paragraphs. This book provides excellent insight into the black American artists working in the 20th century. Bolden provides a fascinating range of artists, including everything from assemblage to folk art to oil and everything in between. Her brief look into each of the artists' lives paints a clear picture of their inspiration and motivation to create in their particular time in history.
