I was overjoyed to find a old hardback copy (and a first edition, too) in a treasure house of a shop in Mount Barker a couple of months ago.
Whilst Ella isn't my favourite of the Wells heroines (that honour will always belong to Veronica), she is the first Lorna Hill protagonist to come from a lower economic background. The halfway point in the series is also the last Wells book I have, although I did read more as a child (and Patience, and Marjorie). Ella is a good place to stop - it's clear where Mariella's story is heading, which is all I'm really interested in by this point, and the rest of the story isn't terribly good. Sebastian, who is in it briefly, is now pompous as well as arrogant; Nigel is, frankly, deeply unpleasant, and Mariella's mooniness over him is extremely tiresome; and Ella's home backgroun ...more
