De eetclub is een verhaal over een groep mensen, die samen de eetclub vormen. Het is een groep van vijf echtparen, die in een dorp bij Amsterdam wonen. Ze lijken allemaal heel gelukkig met hun villa ’s en ook met elkaar. Ze houden echter de schijn op. Evert Struyk, succesvol zakenman, komt dan om het leven bij een brand van zijn villa. Zijn vrouw en kinderen weten te ontsnappen. Babette, de vrouw van Evert, wordt opgevangen door haar vriendin Karen. Iedereen van de vriendenclub is geschokt. Al spoedig komt Karen tot de ontdekking dat de vriendschappen binnen de eetclub niet zo onvoorwaardelijk zijn als ze lijken. Het is goed zolang het gezellig is. Op de dag van de begrafenis van Evert verdwijnt plotseling Hanneke, de beste vriendin van Karen. Ze laat weten dat ze is ‘de eetclub’ even is ontvlucht, maar dat ze snel weer thuis komt. De dag dat Hanneke weer naar huis zou komen, wordt Karen gebeld dat Hanneke van het balkon is gevallen. Langzaam maar zeker wordt het voor Karen duidelijk dat bepaalde mensen belang hebben bij de dood van Evert. Hieronder valt ook Simon, een man waar ze een verhouding mee begonnen is. Simon had met alle mannen van ‘de eetclub’ een zakelijke relatie waar hij zelf ook beter van werd. Karen komt steeds meer in contact met Dorien Jager, de rechercheur en samen gaan ze op onderzoek uit. Achter de uiterlijke schijn gaat een wereld schuil van overspel, bedrog en uiteindelijk zelfs moord. Feestjes, etentjes, tennis, golf, dure strandvakanties en dure kleding: een leeg bestaan.

Het verhaal luistert wel lekker. De schrijfster heeft deze schijnwereld overtuigend neergezet. Als je maar diep genoeg graaft, vind je overal wel wat. De ontknoping was toch nog een verrassing.

Dit is volgens mij geen hoogstaande literatuur. Het is een boek, om snel weg te lezen, bijvoorbeeld in de vakantie, of op een luie zondagmiddag.

Het fenomeen luisterboek is mij wel bevallen. Je kunt stukjes van 5 min. overnieuw laten afspelen als je even gestoord werd met luisteren. Ik ga aan mijn tweede luisterboek beginnen: Contrapunt van Anna Enquist.(less)

Quite enjoyed this rather flimsy crime novel.

Must check out more of the crime translations from bitterlemon press, who seem to have cornered the market in taking high sales european crime and exporting for the UK market.

This has a sly, witty and subversive edge to it, which works well.. the story is all rather standard.

The cover really didn’t call me, but fortunately the author’s name rang a bell and the title suggested interesting possibilities. Spotting the logo of the Bitter Lemon Press helped too. I picked the book up for a closer look.

Here’s what it said on the back cover:

As she investigates her friends' deaths, she is shocked by revelations of several affairs among group members and lots of other secrets that make it impossible to know who is telling the truth. Where has the quest for money, power, and social status led these couples? Is one among them a very clever killer?

Noort's first-person narrative, as told by Karen, renders a believably caustic portrayal of female relationships that form in the pressure cooker of suburban elitism. They all strive to project and maintain a facade of perfection: the perfect marriage, the perfect family, the perfect home. Add some steamy sexual encounters and you have a tasty meal if not a gourmet dinner.

The Dinner Club is an appealing mystery whose setting adds a distinctive flavor to the plot but the book should also appeal to non-traditional romance readers. However, devotees of the cozy mystery might want to skip the steamy appetizers and just devour the main course.(less)

Je leest het verhaal vanuit het standpunt van Karen, een vrouw van begin dertig die verhuist vanuit de stad naar een dorp. In het begin is het erg moeilijk om zich aan te passen en vind ze niet echt aansluiting bij de andere mensen. Maar dan leert ze een paar lotgenoten, vrouwen die ook nog niet lang in het dorp wonen, kennen en samen richten ze ‘De Eetclub’ op.

I liked this. A bunch of Dutch 'Ladies Who Lunch' get together regularly to consume vast quantities of alcohol. They bitch about eachother and bed eachother's husbands on the quiet. It could have been trashy, but I think what helped the book was that the narrator, Karen, is quite nice, normal and likeable. READ IN DUTCH

Saskia Noort is een van dé thrillerschrijfsters van Nederland. Toen ik de Eetclub (inmiddels ook verfilmd) als luisterboek tegenkwam, ben ik het maar gaan lezen, onder mijn motto om zoveel mogelijk verschillende schrijvers te lezen (en zo natuurlijk goede schrijvers hoop te ontdekken).

I pretty much only finished this book because it was short and - despite a bad plot - an easy read. Not exactly sure how that works other than perhaps Saskia Noort is a good writer who's just not terribly good at thinking up plots?

It's a very dark book which isn't bad in and of itself, but when things keep going from bad to worse, people are mean to each other for no apparent reason, and no believable explanation is given for the ultimate outcome... well, it all combines to a b...more

There is a lot of interaction, both personal and professional, between the husbands and wives. Naturally, when one of their number commits suicide by setting fire to his home with his family still inside, they are all bereft and anxious to support the family he left behind.

Instead of the tragic event drawing the group closer together, it has the opposite effect. When Karen's best friend in the group, Hanneke, also dies, a huge rift occurs among the "friends". Karen is convinced that Hanneke was deliberately killed; the other members of the group don't believe any such thing. However, Karen soon finds that she doesn't know as much about her friend as she thought she did, a fact brought home by her discovery of Hanneke's affair with one of the other husbands. As the hidden relationships in the group are unveiled, lives become unraveled. Even Karen goes against her own principles and gives in to her attraction to one of the group. How has the need for friendship caused so much heartache?

The police aren't inclined to believe that the deaths aren't exactly what they appear to be. There is a rather unpleasant policewoman named Dorien Jager, who is removed from the investigation early. Despite that, she contacts Karen and asks her to do some rather inappropriate things, such as use her sexual wiles to obtain evidence.

Saskia Noort is a freelance journalist in The Netherlands. THE DINNER CLUB was a huge success in her homeland and topped the best seller list. The book really isn't crime fiction, but rather a psychological study. It was an ok read for me, but I began to tire of the constant relationship melodrama and was often confused by the jumps between the past and the present, as well as the large cast of characters.

The book starts off when Karen (who narrates the story) and Marcel are woken by the news that there is a house on fire. Evert dies in that fire, but his wife and their two sons luckily escape. All the members of the Dinner Club are devastated and distressed and they rally close to support her in anyway they can. Tensions in the group are soon simmering away and the fire triggers a chain of devastating events. What Karen had thought was a close and supportive group of friends, turns out to have a lot more going on just below the surface than she ever realised. When another member of the Dinner Club falls from a hotel balcony, Karen quickly finds herself more and more on the outer of the group, and finally seeing the real truth behind the genteel suburban façade.

On the face of it, the book is about 5 women and then their husbands – depending on your perception they could be bitchy and very unpleasant; caring and supportive; self involved and mindless; interested in each other; using each other to validate their own beliefs and behaviour; naïve and foolish; sleezy and gross; sexy and attractive; claustrophobic and controlling; carefree and happy, creepy and disturbing. There's always something slightly off about this group – although Karen initially sees them only as kind and caring friends.

Reading THE DINNER CLUB, I initially wondered what the fuss was all about. It was a very quick read but surprisingly engaging despite a natural inclination to dislike these sorts of women intensely. But this book has sold record numbers of copies in its homeland and there must be a reason for that. I suspect that ultimately there are a number of different ways in which this book could be read and understood. On one level it's simply a book about a group of friends that fall apart because of their contributory behaviour, a sort of chick-lit mystery narrative. On another level it's a book about perception – what one person sees (or prefers to see) can be very different from what is actually happening or even what another person is seeing in the same events. At another level it's possible that the book could be read as an analogy of the destruction of a society – how the power base of relationships can be used to achieve an outcome, or how the manipulated can become the manipulator. Certainly, by the stage that the truth is revealed and the perpetrator exposed, the book is a lot less about the mystery and a lot more about the power plays.

Ultimately, I suspect that THE DINNER CLUB is going to be one of those books that people will either like or loathe. It's definitely one to think about, and for that I'm going to come down on the like side.(less)

De boeken van Saskia Noort staan iedere keer weer bovenaan de top 10 lijstjes van beste thrillers. Zo ook dit boek. Dus ik dacht laat ik er ook maar eens eentje lezen. Laat ik beginnen met het positieve punt. Het boek is vlot geschreven, waardoor je wel door wil blijven lezen. Maar ik kan niet echt zeggen dat ik het het ontzettend spannend boek vond. I liked this book, but it isn't one of my favourites. I had to read a literature book written by a Dutch writer for school, and I chose this one because I had seen the movie based on the book. They were pretty similar, a couple minor differences.

The book is very easy to read, it's written quite nice and I had no trouble finishing it. The story isn't as scary and thrilling as I hoped it would be, but that's probably because I already knew what was going to happen.

Again a successful book. exciting to the last page. Its also very familiar how friends can treat each-other. For example the gossip and how they will handle it. It also runs contrary to what you would expect and that makes the book very exciting. Many twisted personalities and deceit, but that also makes it interesting to read. Highly recommended!

Persoonlijk vond ik het een behoorlijk vrouwenboek, met een hoog 'Gooische vrouwen'/ Heleen van Rooyen gehalte.
Kon er niet echt aan wennen dat het boek geschreven is in de 'ik'-vorm vanuit de vrouwelijke hoofdpersoon.
Plot is op zich niet verkeerd maar het verhaal te dun om een heel boek mee te vullen. Had er meer van verwacht.

This is a book about impossible people that have formed a bizarre friendship. I have no idea why I finished this book. The people are all disgusting. It seems very dated, like maybe it was written in the 70's.

Perhaps part of the problem is in the translation from the Dutch, or possibly it is a cultural thing.

Good book - really makes you wanna dive into the plot and the intrigue. The funny thing is that it is apparently written so well that you are bamboozled from the first minute. When the plot thickens and you are thrown certain bones, you are constantly barking up the wrong tree. And, in the end, when you see 'who did it', you feel completley stupid for not having taken that into account. So yeah, written really well...

Deze vlot geschreven beschrijving van de schone schijn van de rijke en succesvolle trein leest als een tierelier en is best vermakelijk, maar uiteindelijk net zo oppervlakkig als de aldaar beschreven personen en hun oppervlakkige leven. Was het dit is de vraag waarmee de lezer ontredderd achterblijft.

Shelves: simpelweg-ontspannend

Neen, dit is geen hoogstaande literatuur, maar ik vond het fijn leesvoer voor tussendoor. Ik was vrij snel gegrepen door het verhaal en wou ook weten hoe het zat. Geen boek dat zal blijven hangen, maar wel leuk genoeg om onmiddellijk in een nieuw boek van deze schrijfster te beginnen.

This Dutch author is still relatively unknown in the United States, but her intricate literary thrillers have made her a best seller in her native Holland. This book, Noort’s only book translated into English so far, has a plot full of twists and characters full of surprises.

Read this quite some time ago, but I remember being annoyed by it. Should have known better than to try something described (on the back cover) as "Desperate Housewives scripted by Patricia Highsmith" (though I do like Patrica Highsmith a lot).

Literaire thriller - was het maar waar.

Gerrit Komrij zei ooit treffend over een boek van hetzelfde kaliber en genre van niet-zo-literaire-thriller: Het moeilijkste woord in het hele boek is macaroni. Je schrikt ervan als je het ziet staan.

Had een boekje nodig voor op het strand en daar is dit prima voor. Lekker simpel en makkelijk weg te lezen. Het intrigeerde mij niet heel erg maar was wel vermakelijk.

Op een of andere manier had ik dit boek nog steeds niet gelezen. Ik snap dat het verfilmd is; het verhaal leest als een film. De personages hebben voor mij genoeg diepte om geen echte karikaturen te zijn.
