Charlie is not happy that the new teacher has decided the class should sit in alphabetical order. Instead of getting to sit with her friends, she has to sit with a boy (yuck, boys!) and to make it worse, he's the most annoying snobby swot of a boy. And then the teacher wants everyone to do a history project on the Victorians - how dull! Until Charlie discovers that girls her age actually went to work as servants in Victorian times, and so she decides to write the diary of a servant girl called L

This enjoyable story is told through the eyes of eleven year old Charlie 'don't call me Charlotte' Enright. It begins at the start of the new school year with Charlie introducing herself as the most popular girl in the school, her best friends, the class nerd and new strict teacher Miss Beckworth.
Miss Beckworth sets a Victorian Project for their History lessons and Charlie struggles to find something to write about until she finds a photograph of a Victorian girl which looks just like More...

This was my second Wilson book after The Suitcase Kid, and I'm definitely a fan. This is an author that can handle difficult family subjects nicely without slipping into moralism or simple fairy-tale solutions, the voice of the kiddo protagonist rings true, and everything is written in a marvelous page-turner way. Not to mention the clever way the Victorian times story is smuggled in the book without being boring. The growing frienship with the class nerd and the slow realisation of what's impor

This is a cute book. I like it a lot. The voice is strong and the main character, adorable. The plot is a little predictable, but I think I'm slightly biased because I've read so many children's/YA novels in the past few years. I especially like the ends of each chapter, where you can "read" the main character's project and learn a little bit about life during the Victorian era. Anyway, I think it'd be perfect for grades 4-6 (9-12yrolds) or reluctant middle school readers (because of t

Another great one from Jaqueline Wilson. I love how she dives right into the grit. I loved how Charlotte and "Lottie" each have their own chapters with the same title. My favorite character was Jamie, and also the mum. I got this book out of the lib and it doesn't have the UK cover, but it does have all the NS illustrations inside. That darn cover was so distracting, nothing like the lovely NS drawings. JW & NS really go hand in hand.

A lot more solid than Double Act - Charlie was a lot more likeable, and the interactions between her and the other characters were far more believable. The bit about the kid getting pneumonia was a little over the top, and the Victorian bits were about as boring as you would expect an eleven-year old's writing to be. But apart from that, a solid read!

After reading this, my second Jacqueline Wilson book, I'm definitely sold. I think she understands what younger readers want to read, while also presenting what they should read, in terms of a thoughtful and well-written story.
I found myself skipping the Victorian parts of this one - hence the four star rating - but I think I probably would have enjoyed them when I still fitted the target demographic.

I LOVE this book! It has a really clever and interesting structure indeed the whole idea of the book is excellent, she works in historical fiction in a way that does not seem false or boring but really adds to the story of Charlie (who, btw is an awesome character, her quirks eg the red room make her really come alive for me).

I liked this book a lot. The humour is simple and the language keeps you reading til the end. This book is suitable for any age as there are some things that all age randes would love. 3.5 out of 5 is my rating for this book.

I remember reading this when I was about nine years old. It stayed with me all through primary and then secondary school. My original copy is battered and broken, but I'm still picking iit up if I'm feeling young!

This gets a high rating because I think it was one of the first books that I really, really loved due to its combo of Victorian history and modern story-lines. It also got me ADDICTED to Wilson's novels.

Another Jacqueline Wilson book that was really enjoyable. I was really interested in Charlie's project and how Lottie lived in Victorian times. I love how each Wilson book is different but so enthralling.

This book got me into reading. I loved it - it was clever, witty...so many books from then, and I still remember the ending.
A great, nostalgic read for kids. Especially on the cusp of reading.

This was my all time favorite book as a kid. Jacqeline Wlison was one of my favorite authors until I started reading "grown up books."

i think this was good because lottie and her mum have to sort their life out and it shows that sometimes that can be quite difficult.

First 'big girl book' I ever finished. Loved it, still do. The history interwoven with a contemporary child's life is just great, though I admit I preferred Lottie's story to Charlie's when I was younger.
