If the book accomplishes nothing else, the reader will have recognize just how important "patterns and processes" are in the development of a leader. In his own words, J. Robert Clinton states that the book is about "spiritual dynamics." He begins by identifying one of his very important presuppositions: "Effective spiritual ministry flows out of being, and God is concerned with our being. He is forming it. The patterns and processes He uses to shape us are worthwhile subjects for leadership stu...more
This book was the freshest approach to understanding who I am and how the events of my life shaped me for leadership. For my dissertation I had read about 147 books and articles. This one book was at the top of the list. Clinton introduces some 150 or more terms about leadership and the role they play in our lives. Recommended reading for any young leader or those who need a refresher course. Clinton was professor at Fuller Theological Seminary.
Wow had a lot of information in it and only about a 1/4 of it was interesting and able to apply. This book would've been excellent had it been chopped in half. That being said I did learn a few things about leadership. I learned what phase I am currently in and how to strive to get into other phases.

My mentor made me read this book almost 15 years ago. I didn't get it back then. But this book now has a place as one of the most formative books I've ever read. The principles Bobby Clinton emphasizes have become regular mantras in my mind and everyday speech.
One of the best books on Christian leadership and the methods God uses to develop leadership ability. I re-read this book regularly. Highly recommend for anyone in Christain ministry.
This book wasn't what I expected. I've heard such incredible things about it. I definitely think that it is full of wisdom and truth, but I am unclear as to the most useful application for a book that seems to systematize God's process for making a leader. With biblical leaders as a template, I think one would be hard pressed to convincingly argue that God has a real process.

Very helpful book on leadership and mentoring. Gives a great perspective on what God is most likely up to in your life and how he usually forms people into His image over a lifetime. Also is helpful in figuring out what God is doing in others lives as well when they come to you for advice or you are helping shepherd them (one of the two most helpful resources that I have seen in this regard).
Read this book. Even if you don't currently carry a "leadership" title - read this book! Incredibly insightful.
My only critique is that I wish it was longer, with more explanation of stages and assessment tools provided.
This would be an excellent book to use in mentoring situations or for a staff read.

One of the best (albeit very technical) book on leadership as ministry. Longer review here: http://gribook.me/posts/2-leadership/
