With a catchy title and marketed as a small book of short stories, I was anxious to read “Arsenic Soup for Lovers, When Chicken Soup Doesn’t Work” by Georgia Z. Post. It’s also subtitled “Very Very Short Stories for Very Very Busy People”. And that’s absolutely true; each story is no more than two pages and takes only a few minutes to read.

I found a few of these stories funny. I found a couple of them interesting. I found many of them disturbing. The author states in her forward that “Some of t

It is a short book of very short stories. The entire book is only 62 pages and with 25 stories they average just over 2 pages apiece. With such a short story there is no time for character development and almost no room for plot. They are very anecdotal, more describing a situation or happening than actually telling a story. Some of them are funny, some are dark and slightly twisted and a few are even sweet. But a couple actually left me a little confused, I had to go back and reread one (it did ...more

Arsenic Soup For Lovers: When Chicken Soup Doesn't Work Very Very Very Short Stories for Very Very Very Busy People is a collection of just that, stories that are 2-4 pages long!

These are clever stories always with some sort of twist at the ending. Be it sweet, hilarious or evil! Personally I liked the sweet stories, people confessing their love to each other or role playing spouses. Some of the plotting cheating spouses stories were rather funny too. I always looked forward to the ending of ea

While the popular Chicken Soup books feature heart-warming, inspirational stories, the stories in Arsenic Soup for Lovers are about infidelity, revenge, the desperate search for a spouse, deception, even murder. Post aims to showcase the darker side of human nature tinged with humor, though many of the stories weren't funny. I'd been hoping for laugh-out-loud stories, but there weren't any, though a few did make me smile.

The subtitle of this outstanding anthology is called: "When Chicken Soup Doesn't Work" which I found quite apt. There are some tiny bombs hidden within the book, but there are some huge success tales as well. Marketed as "Skinny Stories for Grown-ups" these very short stories will tickle your funny bone in a matter of minutes and alleviate any tension you have in your own relationships. I read these with my husband (of 21 years) and we had some serious chuckles along the way.

Recommends it for: those with dark sense of humour
I think the idea of this book is good but I do think the stories could have been better, and could have been funnier. I could just see someone doing something they read in this book and then sighting the book as the reason it was okay to do when the cops have them. I wouldn't want to be involved in that law suit.
