It's a little hard for me review Judson Mitcham: I know members of his family and were even taught by them in high school, yet I also instinctively reject a lot of this kind of poetry. Such is the anxiety of influence: one must admire work from local artists who work in a different tradition than one's self. Mitcham is a natural story teller who is very rooted in the local tradition and the patterns of life of the South. Mitcham also has a great narrative timing, and the anecdotes in his verse c ...more
