This is not a genre I normally read, but I read this because the author is my friend and mentor. This is no piece of fluff! The characters breathe, the plot is superb, the tension and pacing never let up. An excellent, thrilling read! The author adapted it for a screenplay, "Redemption," and won the Nicholl's award. It came very close to being produced as a movie. A well-known star was nabbed for the female lead, and the male lead had been narrowed down to a few well-known actors. Then the botto...more

Previously called Of Wild Ectasy, La Desperada was a tale of adventure, heartache, and love. Set in the Wild West, Elizabeth Dougherty finds herself estranged and running from untrue rumors calling her a murderess. She forces a known outlaw, Boone Coulter, to take her with him in exchange for her releasing him from prison. But what neither Elizabeh nor Boone is expecting is the attraction between them and the danger they face. Will their combined buried secrets lead to their demise, or will Eliz...more

The story kept my attention.
I was always wondered how they could resolve the problems. It seemed
the more I read thier were more problems to resolve.
Elizabeth Dougherty husband committed sucide in Cavendish,TX 1881
Her brother-in-law was sheriff and blamed her for it. He intended to rape her that night, but she got away by knocking him out with a

Elizabeth thought she married for love and the chance to get out from under her family led her West. Her husband couldn't shake the demons and left her lonely and avoiding brother-in-law Clayton--the lawman with bad intentions. Luckily, she had her wits and when pushed, she made her escape. The plan, simple, break out Boone, the wanted man in jail, and have him get her away as fast as possible. Win-win. He wasn't so sure he wanted a lady slowing him down, but he grudgingly agreed to her plan.

The story begins in West Texas – the town of Cavendish in 1881. Civilization has a tenuous hold on the wild land. There was still a need for men like Clayton Dougherty – men representing the law though they were barely on the right side of it. The uneasy and unstable triangle of Clayton, his intelligent and virtuous but scarred brother Joel, and Joel's wife Elizabeth is thrown into violence and death when an outlaw, Boone Coulter shows up.

Once the story gets going, Boone and Elizabeth are on th...more

This is basically a western with romance and neither of those are something I would typically read. I did enjoy the story and it kept my attention throughout. This is the story of the outlaw Boone Coulter and a woman named Elizabeth Dougherty who is accused of killing her husband and is now on the run from her husband's brother who happens to be the sheriff of Cavendish, Texas. Elizabeth ends up busting Coulter out of jail and they go on the run together, both running from Sheriff Dougherty but...more

This was an interesting book with well drawn characters. It was the tale of an outlaw seeking revenge for the murders of his family members and a woman's desperate attempt to escape her cruel brother-in-law. It is a steamy romance (the book could have been 1/4 shorter without the vivid descriptions of the lovemaking). While I enjoyed the tale, I found myself skipping past the unnecessary steaminess. It was a good story of two people who have been forced together by circumstances and one evil man...more

I wasn't expecting to like this book as I have a certain resistance to romances where the main man is a brooding dark guy with a secret past. Seems like it's been done a few times before. Here and there. But this book pulled me in and I've quite enjoyed reading it. The characters are well-drawn, though I did get tired of the female protagonist going on about being weak all the time as she rode for miles and wrangled with would-be rapists and so forth. The sex scenes that seem to have offended so...more

I wrote it. The adaptation I wrote was awarded a $30,000 Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting (presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences). I hope I can be forgiven for giving it loving it, and freely admit I am beyond prejudiced. And of course, ymmv!

I received this ebook from a LibraryThing Early Reviewers giveaway, this is no way affects the content of my review.

I was interested in reading this book because I haven't read many books that deal with the Wild West so to say. I watch Westerns with my grandparents whenever I visit them because they love Westerns. This book is not your grandparent's Westerns. This book fuses together Westerns and romance. It is filled with revenge, and action in the streets and in the sheets. This book is perfec...more

This is another old romance that got a makeover to keep up with the kindle age. Take a good look at that cover and title. Of course I had to read it. Thoughts of woman bandits ran through my head....

She's not a bandit though, not really. Yes, Elizabeth is running from the Law, but she's being falsely accused of murdering her own husband and her brother in law is the accuser AND the town sheriff, so really, what choice does she have but to let the famous outlaw, Boone Coulter out of jail and coer...more

I am still at a loss about what I think about this book. On the one hand I did enjoy reading it for the most part, but on the other hand it didn't really grab me.

At the beginning I was fascinated by all the mystery and wanted to keep reading to find out the whole story, but at the same time I found it a little exhausting to keep all the bits of information in my head. The love drama in the middle of it had me rather bored. I didn't see the end coming, not only story wise, but also because I did...more

What Wild Ecstasy Patricia Burroughs

This is not just a "Western" novel, and not just a "Romance" novel. Those genres are too frequently just long short stories. This is a Novel! Even the minor characters have flesh and bone, and you care about them. They grow, change, mature, learn. It's a Historical Novel, set firmly in its time. I thought that I'd found an anachronism when the hymn "Whispering Hope" was mentioned, but I went and checked: it belongs right where it is. And it has plenty of actio...more

This came recommended and it was only $.99 on Cyber Monday, so I picked it up even though I'm not a fan of ebooks. Reading it as an ebook made it difficult to flip back and pick up plot threads after I'd put the book down for a bit, and I just couldn't get into the story. It had a couple of elements that I usually enjoy, but the format plus the melodramatic tone meant that I never really cared about the characters.

I eventually made it through the novel, but I couldn't bring myself to read the in...more

I finished this novel a few months ago but never got around to adding a rating. I'm terrible at reviews but I wanted to write a few words because I know the author. I thought this was a wonderful story with compelling characters that suck you into their world. There are lots of plot twists and turns that keep you interested and Burroughs' ability to capture the essence of the setting (West Texas and New Mexico) was breathtaking.

My only complaint would be the hanky-panky, not because the scenes...more
